GOLD RING CONTEST AWARDS AND SCORES — Official Announcement — This report contains the final and official scores of the Sixtieth Anniversary Gold and Silver Ring Membership Contest which ended at midnight, December 31st, 1946. Every contestant having at least one new member to his credit has been included in this list as a matter of acknowledgment and appreciation of his contribution to the results attained. On the other hand, due to lack of space we are obliged to omit the listing of branches not having participated in this drive. It should be understood that, in accordance with the conditions of this contest, applications written for certificates to be issued with December dating, were included only if they were mailed before the expiration of the contest. Applications pending as of December 31st, 1946, could not be entered and, therefore, do not figure in these tabulations. During the last few weeks we received scores of applications written during ! December but completed by the examining physicians only some time in January. Contestants must discount such applications which, however, will be credited to them for January, the first month of the Classified Contest of 1947. According to the terms of the second .60th anniversary campaign 45 cash-awards, ranging from $50.- to $400.-, were to be distributed among the highest producers. A valuable gold ring bearing 'the initials of the Verhovay and the number “60” in commemoration of the last year, will be awarded to every contestant who has at least $6,000.- to his credit. Winners óf cash-prizes also are entitled to these awards. Contestants with less than $6,000;but at least $3,000,- production are to receive a silver ring each, similar in design to the gold ring. December production. Contrary to all expectations, December turned out the most successful month of the entire 7 month period of the Gold King campaign. This is the record: Seniors: 265 $244,230,— Juniors: 232 $153,050.— Totals: 497 $397,300,— Contest-totals. During the seven months of the 'campaign 2,615 certificates were issued for a grand total of $2,111,- 750,- insurance. Of these 26 certificates were lapsed by the end of December and. therefore, had to be taken off the records. As a result, contestants are credited with a net total of 2590 certificates and $2,090,500.- insurance. Though the total production attained during the Gold King Contest is 13% less than that of the first 60th Anniversary Contest, substantial progress was made. Continued on page 2 Tournament Communique — More Information About The Verhovay National Bowling Tournament. — -The Rules and Regulations of the 1947 Verhovay National Bowling Tournament, to be held in South Bend, Ind., on May 30-31st and, possibly, June 1st, appeared in the January 8th issue of the Journal. If you have missed the announcement, please write us for an extra copy, or contact your branch-manager who has a mimeographed copy of the Rules and Regulations as well as application blanks which are to be completed and mailed to Mr. R. P. Diliinger. Secretary of the Pittsburgh Ten Pin Association, 1729 Chartiers Ave., McKeesRocks, Pa., by all teams planning to enter the tournament. Entries are to be filed as sooft as possible, but not later than April 14th, 1947. Mr Dillinger will forward the approved applications to the Home Office which, in turn, will make hotel reservations through Frank Wukovits, Manager of Branch 132, South Bend, Ind. Branch 132 is all set to give a grand reception to the greatest crowd of Verhovay bowlers ever assembled. In addition to the tournament, various social events are planned, such as sight-seeing tours in the City of South Bend, a visit to the University of Notre Daihe, and a magnificent Dinner and Dance to be held on May 31st, at the Verhovay Home of Branch 132. All bowlers are to be the guests of Branch 132 at this grand affair which will commence in the evening after the conclusion of thq match-games, and end . . . who knows when! Excellent Alleys Provided! Vice-President Albert B. Ari, Directors Joseph H. Prince, M. D., Richard J. Phillips and Charles S. Smith, members of the Tournament Committee, are proud to announce that the M alers Bowling Alleys, 922 South Main Street, Sbuth Bend. Ind., have been reserved for the tournament. No posts obstruct vision in this very modern, airconditioned (but really!) bowling establishment where no less than twenty first-rate alleys await the bowlers of the Verhovay. Within the establishment there is a .good restaurant, a soda grill and a fine bar . . . (Judging from the last tournament, none of the bowlers will be inclined to enact their version of “The Lost Week-end” . . .) Verhovay Helps Paying Travelling Expenses. As an extraordinary measure, to be in effect only for this tournament, the Committee, upon approval by the Board of Directors, decided to reimburse each bowling team for part of their travelling expenses. This generous action was taken in consideration of the fact that most bowling teams have had no opportunity to accumulate funds for such purposes, and in the hope that this exceptional measure will act as an incentive for even greater participation in tournaments to be held during the following years. It is hoped that teams having attended this tournament will not want to miss similar events in the future and, therefore, will make proper plans for the raising of funds and that the branches involved will lend tHbir support to the teams in the effecting of such plans. The territory of the Verhovay has been divided into five zones and teams will be reimbursed according to the zones in which their branches have been placed. In the following we will attempt to gife a general idea as to the territory covered by each zone, but,in order to avoid misunderstandings, captains of the teams should write to Supreme Auditor/John Sabo for information as to the amounts to be granted to them. Zone J., covers the territory around South Bend, Chicago, Gary, Ind., etc., and since teams from branches residing in this zone have only short distances to travel, no reimbursement will be made to them. Zone II., includes such cities as Flint, Mich., Detroit, Cleveland, Akron, O., Youngstown, O., Dayton, O., St. Louis; Mo.; etc. $30.- will be paid to each team travelling from branches in this zone. Zone III., includes Buffalo, N. Y., Johnstown, Harrisburg, Pa., Welch, Va., etc. — Teams travelling from this zone are to receive $45.!-. Zone IV., covers branches that are as far from South Bend, Ind., as Philadelphia, Pa. The travelling grant for each team from this zone amounts to $60.-. Zone V., includes Trenton, Bridgeport, New York and similarly distant localities. $75,- will be paid to each team from this zone. These grants are figured so that each team travelling in one automobile could easily make it on that amount without much additional expense. Of course, bowlers electing to travel by train would have to pay the difference. Here is a really unparalleled opportunity to visit the middle-west, to meet our hospitable fellow-members in South Bend and Verho\ ay folks from all over the country. Verhovay bowling teams are urged to make the most of this opportunity, for in the future no travelling expenses will Ije paid. In conclusion, let us all express our pincéré appreciation to Branch 132 for their gracious invitation.- Let us show our appreciation by making this year’s Tournament a mass-convention of Verohvay youth!
