Verhovay Journal_____________ only with the cooperation of the entire membership. The high purpose of the Association makes it imperative that all' members participata in our promotional efforts, i.e. the securing of new members, and, of course, the branch-officers must assume leadership in this part of the program. Of course, no one is, nor should be expected to work for nothing. However, it follows from the purpose of the Association and the 61 year old history of how this purpose was realized, that a certain part of the job ought to be considered our own personal sacrifice to the cause. Faith in the excellence of our purpose is the key to the success of any idealistic endeavour, be it church-work, fraternal, social, humanitarian or party-work. Noble causes never could afford high-salaried promoters. Ever since the time of the disciples of Christ, the “better world” was built by men and women who believed that working for a good cause has its own satisfactions that more than make up for the lack of financial gains. Salaries and profits are the first consideration in every business endeavor. The Verhovay, however, is not a business concern, but a fraternal association, A FAMILY OF BROTHERS AND SISTERS. Every member of this family gets his just due. There are no step-children, no stepbrothers in this family. But, like in every right family, the strong ones have to work for the weak ones, the rich Brother must share with his poor sister, and the healthy must support the sick. THAT IS THE FAMILY CONCEPTION OF JUSTICE! 3. ) It follows from the Verhovay being a family that we must further develop those attitudes that make for better family relations. The elimination of^ small quarrels, personal jealousies, poisonous dissensions and retarding disputes must be madepart of our program. Those consistently refusing to take part in the activities of the family must be convinced, by example and kindly argument rather than reproaches or force, that their attitude is a retarding factor in the progress of the family . . . It must be patiently and persistently explained to both old and new members that they are not only holders of insurances certificates but member's of the Verhovajr family, too ... A family that has unlimited possibilities for advancement to the advantage of each and every member, provided the spirit of mutual understanding, helpfulness and cooperation is made to prevail. 4. ) Every family has neighbors and it is - matter of experience that good families usually have good neighbors, too. As fraternals, we have the sister- societies and, then, the churches and all other socially minded groups as our neighbors. We of the Verhovay are proud of always having had good neighbors and we propose that it shall remain that way. We shall not let petty jealousies spoil pleasant^ relations, nor shall we discriminate against any of our neighbors because of their own beliefs, nationality, race or political affiliations. Then, too, as a family, we have relatives. All fraternal societies, churches and other organizations of Hungarian origin are relatives of the Verhovay. Today, when the whole world is yearning for international peace, we cannot afford to indulge in quarrels with our relatives. We propose to respect one another, to support them in their endeavors and to do our share in living with our relatives in a sincerely peaceful manner. 5.) Last but not least, as a great family, we propose to stand by our MOTHER, the mother of all Americans of Hungarian descent, our native land, HUNGARY, in the most tragic period of her history. If for no other reason, wTe shall remain on the best terms with our relatives in order that nothing may prevent us from joining forces in helping our Mother. After all, had it not been for here, none of us would be here in this blessed country. Those to whom site was a good mother, owe her gratitude and generous assistance in the hour of her mortal need. Those to whom she was a step-mother, have no quarrel with her anymore, either. After all, they came to this land and found a real home here because of her stepmotherly attitude. The better life they had found in this land is sufficient reason for them to forget her short-comings. This, then, is the 1947 yersion of Verhovay’s 61 year old program. If it meets with the approval and support of our fellowmembers, this year will be a successful one and we will arrive at its end as a better, stronger, happier and more prosperous . family, a source of abundant help to those in need and of pride and satisfaction to those who will have helped to build a GREATER AND BETTER VERHOVAY. JANUARY 8, 1947 A clerk was helping an elderly, applicant fill out papers for a civil service- janitor job. The clerk would write down the ans wers after reading off the questions. “Do you belong,” asked the clerk, “to the Nazi Bund, or to any political party that plans to overthrow the government?” “Yas’m,” said the applicant. “Which one?” asked the clerk, taken aback by the applicant’s placid candor. “The Republican.” TO THE CONTRIBUTORS The next issue of the Journal will be published on Wednesday, Jan. 29.
