Complete Scores of the Anniversary Membership Contest — OFFICIAL REPORT — 3’1946 ________________________Verhovay Journal___________________________Page 9 Well aware of the significance of_ the. Sixtieth. Anniversary Membership Contest as a test of the strength of our Association and its prospects for future advancement, the readers of the Journal paid close attention to the monthly reports on the progress of the Contest, as it was obvious to everyone concerned that the spirit of the anniversary celebration will be determined by the outcome of this campaign. Undoubtedly, failure of the contest would have created an atmosphere of discouragement fcr the great occasion. Regardless of how great the past of an institution may have been, there is little cause for rejoicing if the future does not seem to offer any assurances of being a continuation of former successes and achievements. Sad prospects take the happiness out of pleasant memories and it is a gloomy anniversary celebration that is held under the auspices of certain defeat. The Sixtieth Anniversary celebrations of the Verhovay were intended to express our faith in the victorious advancement of our brand of fraternalism and this expression was to be based on the success of the campaign preceding the anniversary. Conditions, however, did not hold cut much hope for success. The unsettled labor situation represented an immense handicap that was to stay with our contestants from the beginning to the end of the seven month campaign. Actually, even in the event of failure, it would have been possible to find sufficiently convincing explanations by which to counteract the discouraging predictions of gloomy prophets who are only present in the fields of defeated endeavors. Fortunately, however, there was no need to offer any explanations because the Contest, handicapped as it was from the very beginning, has ended with a success that has met our fondest expectations. Last fall, when presenting the plan of the Anniversary Membership Contest to the Board of Directors, we had based our calculations on an estimate of three thousand members to be secured during the campaign. It is with great pride in the cooperative spirit of our fellow-members that we report the attainment of this goal. Including 584 new membership certificates issued for the month of April, the total production attained during the seven months of the Anniversary Membership Contest was 3,015 CERTIFICATES $2,408,450 INSURANCE. Naturally, this magnificent result is not reflected by corresponding net increase in the membership, not only because of the usual number of deaths, lapses, cash-jsurrenders etc., but also, because a great number of certificates issued in the Juvenile department represent exchanges from term-certificates to ordinary classes of insurance resulting in an increase in the total amount of “insurance in force” rather than in a net increase in the number of members. Naturally, the monthly membership reports will reflect to a certain extent the progress made during the contest but it should be kept in mind that the increase in the total amount of “insurance in force” is much higher than that in the number of new members secured. In other words, part of the success of this campaign lies in the improvement of the insurance portfolio of the membership which docs not appear in cm- monthly membership reports. Needless to say that such improvement in the insurance portfolio represents great progress in the strengthening and advancement of the Association. The large number of contestwinners is another unusual feature of the Anniversary Contest. Of 330 contestants 168, (51%) won a prize, one hundred are awarded the Grand Prize consisting in the invitation to attend the Anniversary Celebrations at the expense of the Association, and 27 of the grand-prize winners are to be presented with additional awards. The great number of contestants and the high percentage of contest-winners is the true measure of cooperation and enthusiastic response on part of the membership of our organization. Special mention must be made of the 49% of the contestants who could not be awarded any of the prizes. Many of them tried their best but could not make headway because industrial and commercial life was completely paralyzed in their communities / These fellow-members are to be highly commended for their determination to participate in the contest notwithstanding adverse conditions. Far from belittling their accomplishments we realize that without their contributions the contest could not have been as successful as it was. In accordance with previous announcements to this effect, the list of all winners, participants and non-participating branches is presented in the following. CONTEST-WINNERS. GROUP I.
