1945 / Verhovay Journal
July 25, 1945 44How Shall I Act When He Returns? Verhovay Journal soldier at some time during his life. It shouldn’t be that way but it has been that way up to now. There hardly was a I Page 7 (Continued from Page 6) over the agonies of men buried alive hundreds of feet underground while their families are standing at the entrance of the mine with the same experience of horrible expectation as wives and parents have while their sons are fighting in strange worlds. Automobile accidents, suddenly striking illnesses and other tragedies have made civilians as much subject to undescribable sufferings as our heroes are made to suffer. International peace is not the equivalent of peaceful existence. Life still Will remain a struggle, a succession of shocking tragedies for many, even when the war is going to be over Therefore it is only natural to assume that the majority of our soldiers will overcome the effects of the war just as well as the majority of civilians overcome their individual trials and tragedies. We hope that there will be no wars anymore. General Patton contradicts us, though, when he told to the children of the school in which he received his elementary schooling: “You are the future nurses and soldiers. For there will be wars, because there always were wars.” Ever since human beings existed on the earth, there were wars. It was considered to be a part of man’s life to serve as a generation that had not witnessed the horrors of war. But the experiences of war as a rule, had not changed the personality of the men who were called upon to participate in them. It shouldn’t now.
