1945 / Verhovay Journal

May 30, 1945 The FERRET SEZ (Continued fucm Page 4) culture instructor, his collge work was of good use in the Army. While in Tampa, he met the “only girl in the world” and married her in the midst of an elaborate wedding ceremony. Helen is now with Adolph at his new post in Gulf Port, Missississipi, where the Corporal is a propeller specalist in the Air Corps. Adolph, and his brothers Louis, David and Charles, USN, are the stepsons of Zsigmond Pinkoczy. They have three charming sisters, two of \yhom are VFIA members, while the third, Olga, is a good prospect. Due to the fact that I have made interviews of only two of my five remaining GI’s, let me complete the history of the Pinkoczy lasses. Grace is married to Rev. David Parragh and they live in Bethlehem, Pa. with their year and a half old baby daughter. Our Grace was a concert pianist of wide renown in Detroit and Michigan, and has received one of the highest degrees in the musical profession, which enables her to teach music. Mrs. Parragh is also an experienced organist. Rose Pinkoczky is the wife“of Detective Carl Kobbeo of Dear-Chicago Br. 563 Honors War Veterans (Continued from Page 4) sacrifice. Ted was at Bouganyille, in the Solomons and in the Philippines. He died on Luzon, April 5, 1945, For Branch 37 honor also is due, for that branch also lost a member in the military forces. Valentine Demeter, CBM, gave his life for the cause of FREEDOM. He was in the Solomons, and at Leyte, where he was wounded for the third time, which resulted in his ultimate death. Joseph Szenassy, Bob’s father, tearfully expressed his joy in having his son return and invoked the guidance of the Lord that other fighting men also return safely to their homes to bring joy and gladness to their loved ones. Secretary Balogh then thanked all Verhovay branches and others for their representations, cooperation and their fraternalistic spirit—for it was their presence that helped make this welcoming dinner to two of our veterans such a success. Several gypsies were brought into the hall and they took over on the stage, playing Magyar melodies and many a ‘ropogós csárdás.” We take pride in speaking of the four Verhovay members who then gave vocal renditions of Magyar songs—accompanied by the gypsy musicians—the '‘füstös cigányok.” . Mrs, Charles Scholz of Verhovay Branch 132 in- South Bend, Indiana, sang: Ha Majd a Tavasz; Together (which she dedicated to Pfc. Bob Sanoshy); and Nem Kell Pénz a Boldogsághoz. Mr. Scholz also attended this dinner, The Scholz’ have a son, Cpl. George Scholz, serving with the forces in Europe. John Matanyi, the soft-spcken gentleman from Chicago Branch 96, rendered with Magyar gusto: Sir a Duna; Kati néni Levele; A Fa Kereszt; and Igazságot Magyarorszagnak. Bob’s dad, Joseph, who always took a. leading role in the Ifjúsági Kör, sang: Nem Tudom az Eletemet Hol Rontottam El; and Domboldalon All Egy Öreg Nyarfa. Stephen Papp, another of Branch 503’s popular singer, gave a good rendition of Magyar songs: Hogyha ír Majd Edes Anyám; Hull az Eso Zápor Eso- and Feher Selyem Csipkés Szélű. Next, our appreciation is due to these who contributed to the financial success of this affair: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Balogh; Andrew Fury; Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Huzianyi; Mr. and Mrs. George Fury; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Puskarits; the Csotitos family; Mr. and Mrs. John Svinyicky; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bazso; Mrs. Mary Fury; Mrs. (id.) George Fury; Mrs. Vera Kish; Mr. and Mrs. William Mader; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fateh; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ivan; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rebman; Frank Ronto; Mr. and Mrs. Alex Molnár; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Olcsanyi; Frank Dumilla; Brapch 96; Branch 164; Blanch 37; Mrs. Kathy Podegratz; Mrs. Andrew Bazso, Sr.; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Engelhardt; Mr. and Mrs. John Szenassy and family; Mrs. John Stampar; James Radi, Sr.; James Radi, Jr.; Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Papp and Irene; and Mr. and Mrs. John Koubeck (Mother and Son Bakery—3947 N. Ashland Avenue), who also donated the large delicious cake bearing the inscription: “Welcome Home Soldiers.” The three Verhovay branches had representation by their officials. Branch 96 was represented by John Matanyi, Vincent Boros and Frank Tinich. Branch 37 by Joseph Rohaly and Frank Kovács. Branch 164 by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kunstadt; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Irocky; Mr. and Mrs. Michael Zavatkay; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ivan; Mr. and Mrs. William Feifar, Jr.; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Feifar. To the ladies in the kitchen and the gentlemen at the bar also go our thanks for their untiring efforts: Mrs. Julia Szenassy; Mrs. Vera Kish; Mrs. Mary Bazso; Mrs. Rose Ivan; Rosemary Sanoshy; Mrs. Helen Balogh; Mrs. Helen Rebman; Mrs. Kathryn Fury; Dorothy Bazso; Elaine Rebman, and Paul Bazso and William Mader. This dinner is but a meager token of our respect to our veterans. We on the production front cannot measure or hope to repay the hardships, sufferings and agony these boys—all Americans —are undergoing with their comrades. They are in thousands of shell holes and bomb craters, among smashed-down outlines of sand beaches, or on coral reef's—and Branch 503 Verhovayans are among them, in Europe, in the Pacific, in Okinawa. There is accumulating evidence that these Americans are meeting another Armageddon. It is useless for me to try to describe their deeds of valor, to write of their courage and their determination to see this war through, in spite of all obstacles. I know I can say that there will never be enough admiration nor descriptive words to pay our soldiers, sailors and marines their just due. Verhovay Journal CPL. ADOLPH KULCSÁR born. Her college education enables her to be an efficient mother to her 4 year old daughter and two year old son. (Editor’s humble remark: Since when do you have to be a college graduate in order to be an efficient mother?) Olga, the baby, is a student in a private girl’s school in Bethlehem. Your Ferret would certainly like to add this baby to the 429 roster. * * * Look in the June 13 issue for thumb-nail biographies of T/51 Helen Zakar, our charming and envied WAC, now stationed in New Guinea; also Pvts’ Albert Sara and Louis Rákosi. I promise your attention will be well rewarded! * * * NOTICE: BRANCH MEMBERS: Branch 429 will hold a regular monthly, meeting on Sunday, June 3 at 3:00 p. m. sharp at the Verhovay Home. Please attend as an interesting plan will be unfolded for your enjoyment. Our Coast Guard member, Nicholas Xavier Horvath has informed me that restrictions for small cruisers have been lifted to a satisfactory degree, and THAT CRUISE on the Detroit River promises to be the highlight of the summer season. Since Sugar Island, wh^re we held our picnic two years ago has now been purchased by a private organization, plans will have to be made whether to hold an all day cruise or whether some other Island in the River can be chosen for that outdoor barbecue. Remember those nice, thick, juicy pork chops which were broiled on those big flat stones? Remember the phonograph and records, and rambling through the thick undergrowth.... remember those other cruisers with their congenial passengers, and their beer bottles stuck in the sand to keep cool . . . exploring that haunted house, and the pictures we took? Oh yes, if you can connive with your local druggist for an extra roll of film, save it for that big day in June or July and that long, lazy, peaceful day on the River, and so on and so on and etc. . . .------------V-----------BRANCH 361 Cleveland, O. The Verhovay Ladies Branch No. 361 will change their monthly meetings to the first Monday instead of Sunday for the months of June, July, August and September at 7:30 o’clock at the Verhovay Home. After that it will change back to the first Sunday of each month. i Page 5 DIRECTORY OF THE VERHOVAY F. I. ASSOCIATION DIRECTORS OF THE VERHOVAY F. I. ASS N.
