Entered as 8econd Class Matter at the Post Office at Detroit, Michigan, under the Act of March 3. 1879. A Hearty Welcome TO THE 750 NEW MEMBERS WHO JOINED OUR ASSOCIATION DURING THE MONTH OF AUGUST September 14, 1944 Two Brothers from Port Huron, Michigan ■mtw- i m -m «hi ST. SGT. JOHN GROSS S. 1/C. STEPHEN GROSS John and Stephen Gross are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gross of Port Huron, Mich. Staff Sergeant John Gross, age 21, is an aerial gunner on a B-17, and is stationed in England since January, 1944. He received his training in .Mississippi, Florida, and Arizona and was then shipped to England. He joined the Army Air Corps in April, 1942. — Seaman First Class Stephen Gross, age 18, volunteered for military service in September, 1943. He received ten weeks’ training at Great Lakes, 111., and then went aboard ship in California and spent seven months in the Pacific theatre of war. He took part in the battles on the Marshall Islands, New Guinea and Tarawa. The final results of the JOHN BENCZE ANNIVERSARY CONTEST will be determined after the date of the deadline for our Journal. But since at this writing we have the 8th of September, it is improbable that the above announced result should be subject to substantial change. It will possibly be higher, under no circumstances less. The situation on September 7th was the following: Juvenile Department: 361 certificates issued, 25 pending; Senior Department: 301 issued and 48 pending. Total issued 662, total applications pending 73. — However, yesterday and today we received another twenty applications for the month of August which raises the number of issued and pending -ca\ss to 755 and there are still two more days to go. Taking into consideration the fact that some of the pending applications may be rejected for medical reasons, we can safely assume that the number of 750 closely approximates the final result. 750 new members is a marvelous achievement in any month but it is more so if it happens during the hottest month of summer. It certainly represents a grand testimony of appreciation for our Supreme President and also of the loyal spirit of the branch managers, organizers and Convention .Delegates of our organization who participated in the drive. We are certainly happy and proud to welcome the host of 750 new members into our midst. We appreciate their confidence in our Association and the spirit with which they have subscribed to the principles of our organization. We extend to them a hearty welcome hoping that they intend to become not just certificate-holders in our organization but also members of the great brotherhood which unites us in tasks that surpass in importance that of mere life insurance protection. We hope that they will not be just '‘insured people”, but also COWORKERS of the brotherhood of Verhovayans which has dedicated itself to an extensive program ©f fraternal and patriotic activities. Let us hope that it has been explained to each and every new member that the Verhovay is MORE than just an insurance organization, Nevertheless, it seems necessary to go into details along this line at this time. We believe that 750 new members represent a group of such size that they deserve some enlightenment as to the activities and services rendered by the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. Most of these 750 members will receive with this issue their first Journal and for that reason, when we extend to them a hearty welcome, we will endeavor to set forth the principles and privileges that are involved in being a member of the greatest American-Hungarian fraternal organization. For the other, older members this may seem a repetition of facts. Nevertheless, we found it to be of benefit, if from time to time we restate the facts about the Verhovay. It makes all of us more conscious of the fact that we are members of a great brotherhood which day by day progresses in the realization of a program that has been rarely surpassed by any other organization of its kind. WHAT DOES THE VERHOVAY GIVE? First of all it gives you an insurance certificate on highly favorable terms and at a rate which in itself represents a substantial saving. However, the Verhovay goes far beyond just saving money for its members. First of all, it gives them an opportunity for finding new friends amongst the Verhovay membership and affords them an agreeable social life within the branch. Then the Verhovay proceeds to make SACRIFICES.for the welfare of its members. Let us start with the babies .., Every woman who is a member of the Sick Benefit Department will receive a $15 check when a baby is born to her. That check is a gift of the Association the amount of which does not count into the total amount of sick benefits each member of that department is entitled to receive. Thus the Verhovay expresses its appreciation to the Verhovay mothers. When the boys and girls grow up, they want to study and to play. The Verhovay helps them to fulfill their desire. Deserving students are granted interest-free loans or scholarships that help them continue their studies and become professionals. And through Verhovay Journal the granting of sport-aid the Verhovay helps them to organize bowling teams, baseball teams and to develop well-planned social activities. After the boys and girls have grown up, the Verhovay stands at their side, ready to help whenever necessary. Just recently Branch 226, of McKeesport, Pa., held a successful collection for one of its members whose earthly belongings have been swept away by the last tornado. Before that Branch 82 of Homestead, Pa., assisted in similar manner a brother who had a serious accident. Branch 108 of Youngstown, O., was the first one to set up a fund for the assistance of returning veterans and suit was followed by Branch 443, Detroit, Mich., and by Branch 174 of Scranton, Pa. Branch 164, of Chicago, 111., has for years sent generous Christmas-packages to all of its soldiers and many other branches are doing the same good work now. These are just examples, it is not THE record. The complete record would show that Verhovayans have always been standing by, ready to help their brothers in every emergency. And when old age comes? Oh, how bitter old age can be for those who are left alone, without any means of support! The Verhovay does not permit them to lose the savings of a life-time accumulated in the reserves of their insurance certificates. If necessary, the Verhovay helps them to pay the dues. And if there are no means for their support at all, the Verhovay places them in the care of a good Old Peoples’ Home where they can spend the last years of their lives without worry or anxiety for the future. In addition to all that, the branch managers and the Supreme Officers of the Verhovay are always ready to assist their co-members helping them to solve their problems, intervening in their behalf before various authorities, if necessary. Thus from the cradle to the grave the Verhovay stands by its members and works in their behalf. Truly, we can be proud to be members of such an organization! But let us not forget our Journal. The Hungarian weekly and the English bi-monthly, which gives members a chance to express themselves, keeps them informed on all affairs of the organization and renders enlightenment, entertainment and forms a bond that keeps us all together. Let us not forget the text-book the Verhovay has given into the hands of tens of thousands helping them to attain citizenship. Let us not forget the American-Hungarian correspondence book that has rendered eminent service to the soldiers and families of our organization and even to those who are not even members of the Association. Let us not forget that the Verhovay also has an immense patriotic program which has made and is still making substantial contributions towards the war effort. Let us not forget all these things and let us learn to appreciate them because all this and more comes entirely free to all who have joined the brotherhood of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. WHAT DOES THE VERHOVAY EXPECT FROM ITS MEMBERS? Isn’t it fair that in return the Verhovay should also expect something from its members? First of all the Verhovay expects you to pay your dues promptly and AT THE BRANCHMEETING. It is unfair to the glorious program of the Verhovay to expect that dues should be collected from the members at their homes nothwithstanding the fact that our dues are much lower than the dues of those organizations which send out agents to collect the dues every month. The Verhovay does not penalize you for not paying your dues promptly. You lapse yourself out of your insurance with an insurance company after the expiration of the 30 days’ grace period, but the Verhovay does not drop you from its list for 90 days and even after that time it makes it easy for you to have your certificate reinstated. But why abuse that right? Why demand of an unpaid branch-manager that he should run after you when you know perfectly well that in every case all the facilities of the Verhovay are at your disposal to help you? Isn’t it fair to expect that you too help the Verhovay by attending the meetings, paying your dues there and participating in the solving of all those problems that come before the branch and participating also in all the social and charitable activities in which the branch is engaged? Our branch-managers have their book-keeping and accounting to do. They are also engaged in the endless task of soliciting new members. Furthermore it is they wlio organize and conduct all drives in behalf of stricken members. Whenever there is a patriotic movement—the branch managers run around to bring them to success. They are in charge of social activities. It is the membership which benefits by their untiring work. Isn’t it unfair to expect them to turn into collectors thereby making it impossible for them to discharge their various duties? The Verhovay has the right not only to expect its members to pay their dues promptly thereby relieving the branch manager of unnecessary work but also that they assist them in their various tasks. When we welcome the 750 new members who joined during the month of August, we welcome them as potential COWORKERS who are willing to enrich their own lives by participating in all those social and patriotic activites which represent the program of the Verhovay. The more willing workers we haVe, the greater the achievements of the Verhovay will be. The ONE MILLION DOLLAR VERHOVAY HOSPITAL TRAIN serves to illustrate this point. And let there be no mistake about it: he who closes himself up within the sphere of his own limited life, impoverishes his own life, narrows down his vision, and permits the most valuable human emotions to die in his own heart. No one ever lost by working in behalf of others. Nothing makes life richer than service: it invigorates the mind, it keeps the secret fires of idealism burning in the soul, it makes for a better and HAPPIER life. That better and happier life the Verhovay offers to you who have joined our ranks during the month of August and to all those who have joined before. May you all find added comfort in the knowledge that as long as you are faithful to the Verhovay, the Verhovay will be faithful to you. May you all know that he who is a member of this brotherhood, shall never remain entirely alone ... Thus we welcome you, 750 new members... let us shake your hands knowing that you will be members of the Verhovay family, co-workers of the Verhovay program ... true brothers and sisters ... true Americans ... true men and women, who, we hope, have joined our organization because you believe that man does not live only for food, clothes and lodging but for some higher purpose. Happy is he who has found a higher purpose by which to enrich his life. ARE YOU AWARE that the longer YOU PUT OFF INSURING YOUR LIFE the more IT WILL COST YOU
