1944 / Verhovay Journal
March 10, 1944 Verhovay Journal It is with great pleasure to write that our bowling teams aTe making very good progress, for they are in the spirit of the game whole-heartedly. The enthusiasm with which they display their skill on the alleys is wonderful to see, this in the face of extreme anxiety which is caused by the absence of the players’ dear ones, who are serving in the Armed Forces. But this is the way our boys want it — for those on the home front to keep in trim by going on with their games regularly; for when our boys return, they will want to join the bowlers’ ranks and continue as though there had been no interruption in their life, civilian and sport. At this writing it is difficult to tell just which team is the most favored, for all are making good marks in their own locality. Each Branch is supporting their team, which adds to the spirit of the game, for it is cooperation among the players plus the loyal support of the Branch members that helps to make a bowling team great. The Bowler is just egotistical enough to want to hear a few cheers from the spectators when he scores a good mark. And he deserves the applause of his fellow-members. When the teams meet regularly, there is bound to be marked improvement in each players’ game, for it is regular practice that keeps the bowlers in good form. Some of the reports that have come in from various Branch Sport Reporters testify that their teams make a tremendous hit in their city games. In fact, some of them are making bowling news in their local newspapers. Which makes us feel quite proud of the fact that our players are carrying the name VERHOVAY forward in their locality. Our bowlers like competition— for competition is the spice of life, they claim, and helps to bolster up sagging spirits when things look rather on the grey side of life. When they compete with other teams, they .can not help but learn something new from their opponents. For all bowlers have a certain way in which they play the game, a certain twist of the wrist, a certain manner of letting the ball leave the hand and start on its way down the smooth, shinning alley, to strike down the “little wooden men” at the end of the line. Thus, our Bowlers benefit by playing with other teams in their city. Then, too, there is the business side of life to consider. For many a new member was secured by our Bowlers talking VERHOVAY to the players on the opposite teams. By « acquainting others of the many features of a Verhovay Certificate has helped a lot to bring them into our membership. The social side also has its advantages. For after the games the teams usually get together and discuss various topics of the day, even though Bowling may be the chief subjects of conversation. Friendships made in this manner usually prove to be pleasant and lasting. For when people share a common interest it serves to keep them closer together through the years. For bowling opposite a certain team this year will bring about a sincere friendship between the Bowlers and they will want to play with the same team the following year, to determine just how much each team of players has improved. There are many advantages to Bowling, — it is a good, clean sport, which serves to build the body stronger and keep it supple; it helps bring the members closer together, also to acquaint the opponent with the advantages of having a Verhovay Certificate; makes lasting friendships with interesting people whom it would be difficult to meet during the course of our daily life; and it serves to create good-will among the membership in particular. Keep on bowling then, and let us know how your Teams make out. How are the Teams in Gary, Indiana coming along? Also the Teams of Branch 395, Me Keesport, Penna., and the Bowlers of Chicago, Illinois? We would appreciate hearing from all our Teams. CALUMET MERCHANT BOWLING LEAGUE Standings January 24, 1944.
