Februry 24, 1944 _______________________ VevKoVCiy JoUTTial ____________________________Fage 7 Bowling Interest Is Great (Passed by US. Censor) Februrary 9th, 1944 Oahu, Hawii Bowling interest was never greater than it is today, nor were the players in better form, judging from the scores that are coming in from the various Verhovay Bowling Teams throughout the country. These scores indicate that there is nothing wrong with our Bowlers’ playing and when they step up to the foul line, they “swing ’em down the lanes” in such a manner that the scores they make are a good indication of their skill. Our Bowlers are carrying on in spite of many handicaps brought about by the war. Many players have gone into the U. S. Armed Forces, thus depleting the ranks of the bowlers- But those who are left, are doing their share in the defense plants and at the same time, keeping in trim by bowling. Keen interest is manifested in the game by our Bowling athletes who are determined to make their team the victor. While they are aware of the fact that there will be no Verhovay National Bowling Tournament for the duration of the war, our Bowlers are going ahead with their games, and some of the Teams are playing in local City Tournaments. The Verhovay Teams playing in local Tournaments are certainly giving their opponents plenty of competition and the contest is an event that proves the ability of the players on both teams. In the past our teams have always put up a gallant fight to bring the Verhovay Teams the fame and publicity they deserve. Often the games they played have been spectacular, and match games have demonstrated the skill of the Bowlers, while league and booster games have been a great factor in bringing Verhovay Bowling Teams into the foreground. We have heard from a number of our Teams from various parts of the nation; but we have not heard any news of teams in New Jersey, New York, Penna., and many other states. What about the teams in Gary, Indiana And Youngstown, Ohio? Let us hear how your Teams are progressing in your localities. BOWLING AT BRANCH 475, MILWAUKEE, WISC. Bowling at Branch 475, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is coming out on top. We are making sport news in our local newspaper. Two weeks ago the excitement ran very high at the bowling alleys when the two teams wanted to beat the first team. No such luck, for the first team is just too good. Team No. 1 bowled in our City Tournament, but as the Tournament is not yet over and Team No. 2 'did bowl, I can not let you know standings. But we hope one of the Verhovay teams will collect. , The scores for the Indiana three games for Feb. 7th, were: 794, 722, 851, totaling 2367; won 1 game and lost 2. They are certainly keeping in trim and won’t have any difficulty bowling in the Tournament after the war is over. DEAR FRIENDS: Just recently I received a December issue of the Verhovay Journal, which had been mailed to my old address and was forwarded to me. I presume my Darling Sister (who is employed at the Home Office) forgot to place my new address on the mailing list. Maybe, it’s just as well that she did forget, for this gives me an opportunity to great one of the nicest group of friends all at the same time. This time I greet you from beautiful Hawaii. Believe it or not, I’m struggling with this typewriter under a pale Hawaiian moon and listening at the same time to native melodies from the Company radio at the dining tables. I assure you that this is not as elaborate as one of the outdoor Coffee House Diners in Europe, but it is outdoors just the same and right below a beautiful mountain range and opposite a colorful Hawaiian city. I like this place much better than any of my previous camps in the States and if it wasn’t for tha charming Verhovay girls and my dear friends at the office, all of whom I want to see again, I would try to find myself a Hula Hula girl and settle down here to stay. It will probably interest you to know that the first stranger I met at the Honolulu YMCA dance turned out to be a Hungarian Verhovayan from Trenton, New Jersey. His name is Nick Bagley and we had an interesting talk. During the course of our conversation he mentioned that he knows Mr. Bencze and Mr. Ari. Nick promised to write to me, if and when he comes to Honolulu again; but so far I have not heard from him. Since writing is such a big job for me and due to the fact that the Army has a habit of waking me up so early in the morning, I’ll sign off. With very best wishes to all of you and with hopes that soon we will enjoy a happy reunion. Sincerely, Sgt- Kalman J. Erdeky
