January 27, 1944_____________________________________ VerJlOVCty JoUmdl vV S P O H.T S v• BOWLING mm Although there was no Verhovay National Bowling Tournament in 1943 and there will be no tournament this year, our Bowlers are still going on with their games in their branches throughout the nation. The teams do not lack any enthusiasm; on the contrary, they are going ahead with their bowling as though preparing for a tournament. For our Bowlers are playing their games with the same spirit as when they were practicing for the national tournament. This is the only way in which to keep in trim for the time when the war will be ended and we can hold our Verhovay National Bowling Tournament again. The Bowling Teams No. 1 and No. 2 of Branch 475, Milwaukee, Wis., are certainly coming out on top. Team No. 2 will bowl in Chicago on March 25—26. This will be a wonderful event for both the Milwaukee Branch and also for the Chicago Branches to become better acquainted and carry the Verhovay Bowlers on to victory. We haven’t heard from Mr. Nick Palla, who sends us the scores of Branch 130, East Chicago, Indiana for some weeks, but if their games are as ^ood as those on which we have received a report in the past, they must be coming out on top as the winners in their city. The games of Branch 20, Fairport Harbor, Ohio, as reported by ' Steve Sutch, Jr., are doing fine according to their score sheets. Every player is out to win and their group of players make a winning team. The Ferret from Branch 429, Detroit, Mich., sent in some excellent scores of the girls who are keeping in trim; they are holding the league, and leading with high average on their team. They plan a city tournament which will be the women’s largest bowling tournament in the nation. We have yet to hear from teams of other Branches. What about the Bowlers in Trenton, Dayton, Youngstown, Cleveland, (hope your alleys have been put into shape for your teams), New York, and many other teams of our Branches? Our Teams do not lack competition, for those teams which are located near other Branch teams are playing match games and forging ahead with their scores. It is such enthusiasm that helps keep up the mbrale on the home front; for our Bowlers need recreation and relaxation after a day of hard work at the defense plant or office. Some think it is too early to plan for post-war games, with the present so unsettled, the future uncertain, for we know not wfcjit the next moments holds for each of us. We do not know just whsn the men of our teams will be called into Service, nor when the ladies of our women’s team will be inspired to join the rank of the WAVES, WACS, SPARS or MARINES; but in spite of these unknown future events, our Bowlers are going on with their games; for it helps to keep them in shape so they can carry on their work at the various defense plants where they are employed. Right now it is very important tfc.at they do their work well, for the lives of so many of our boys— Verhovay boys—depend upon the way they do their work on the home front. Many of us have abandoned most of our pre-war pleasures, given them up for the duration, in order to concentrate our every effort on the winning of the victory and the peace for our democracy. But we must take at least one evening in the week £pr physical relaxation, in order to keep us fit to perform our defense work well and give the best that is in us to give. After all, it is not asking too much to do our work well, when we stop to think of what our boys are giving at the fighting fropt. It is their very life that is endangered every moment of thgir stay on the battlefield; while we, at home, can safely retire each night in a warm cozy house with all the comforts of home around us; while our boys sleep, when it is possible, in foxholes, and under the open sky, in jungles and on deserts, with the enemy near by. So with the above in mind let us go each day to our work with the prayer that our boys w*U soon be marching home, carrying the banner of victory and peace. Let us think of them also wbjn we relax in the evening, and when we bowl our games, for they, too, were once a part of our teams, and are looking forward to the day when they can rejoin us and take part in upr games.-----------v----------SPORTS Bowling News of Br. 475, Milwaukee, Wis. This is a belated news from the Milwaukee Bowlers. We have a good reason; the Milwaukee Bowlers of Branch 475 had a poor time of it all. The original Bowlers started out as usual last Fall at Kissner’s Booster’s, but since that time much has happened. Some of our Bowlers are working in Defense plants, others have followed their husbands into the next world, and some of these were our most beloved members and best Bowlers of our teams. But we are agáin well organized and also breaking into print in our local newspapers. Our hats are off again to the Verhovay Bowling Team No. 1, the 3 games. We hope that they can stay on top. Our No. 2 Team is in 4th place — not so bad. No. 2 Team looks tops on the alleys with their trim uniforms and the Verhovay Frat. Ins. insignia written boldly on the back. Our No. 2 Team will bowl in Chicago on March 25—26. BOWLERS AND MEMBERS OF VERHOVAY BRANCH 475 YOUR NEXT MEETING WILL BE AT 522 N. 13TH STREET THE SECOND WEEK IN FEBRUARY AT 8 P. M. SHARP.
