January 27, 1944 Verhovay Journal Page 5 For many years St. Valentine’s Day has been observed on February 14th in honor of Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr who lived in the third century. Although this day has been named after the saint, there is no connection with him and the sending of love tokens by sweethearts. A valentine is usually a compliment sent to one’s beloved—it is an ornamental greeting of a sentimental character. Sometimes, comic valentines are sent, often anonymously, to create a bit of humor in the life of the recipient, whose everyday life is rather a drab affair. If the one receiving such a card guess the sender’s name, he, or she, will reciprocate in like manner; and thus both parties enjoy the giving and sending of comic valentine cards. At this time we are especially reminded of Si. Valentine’s Day, for our loved ones are aivay, undergoing every hardship at the fighting fronts scattered throughout the world. It is of them that our thoughts are filled and whose safety and happiness with which we at home are mostly concerned today. On this St. Valentine’s Day, let us remember our boys—sweethearts, by sending them a love token of greeting. It can be sentimental, ornamental or humorous; but the important thing to do is to send them a greeting of some kind. It is such tokens of remembrance that our boys appreciate and think lovingly of the one—his sweetheart— xvho is left behind and has not forgotten him on this day of days. It has been said that all the world loves a lover, and this day of Verhovayan Will Open Law Office Soon in Roseland, Illinois This is a story of success through hard work and of getting an education the hard way. If there is anyone who can prove the truth of the proverb: “Perseverance guarantees success”, — it is WILLIAM A. TÖRÖK, member of branch No. 96, of Chicago, 111., now an accomplished lawyer who will soon open his own lawoffice in Roseland, 111. William A. Török was born December 15, 1911. For many years he has been working in the law-offices of the great Armour Packing Company. At the same time he went to night-school. For 11 years this ambitious young man studied. He graduated from the Englewood Evening High School, then from the Loyola University and finally received the Degree of Bachelor of Law from the John Marshall Law School in June, 1943. Following that, he was called before the Illinois State Board of Law Examiners and passed his examinations which were held on October 12, 13, 14, 1943. That this exam was no picnic, is easily conclude! from the fact that it listed : hours each day. Out of 104 can didates only 45 passed, among them our fellow-member, Wm A. Török. At last the day came when he was to see his ambitions realized and to receive the reward of 11 years of untiring work. On January 10, 1944, he was scheduled to appear before the Supreme Court of Illinois at Springfield, 111. His charming wife, who has a highly responsible position with the Heff Jones Chicago Inc., accompanied him to Springfield; where he, and the other candidates were presented to the chief justice for admittance to the Bar by the Attorney of the Illinois Bar Association. After the roll-call they took the oath of the Attorney and were then admitted to practice law. Congratulations to our fellowmember, the lawyer William A. Török, who with his perseverance and ambition has set an example to our youth! We, Verhovayans, are as proud of him, as is his wife, being so highly successful in her profession, rejoices over the success of her husband. He has proven again that in this great country there are no limitations for a man who has the williwer and the intelligence to iprove himself. Now that he will open his own iw-office in Roseland, early in February, we hope that many /erhovayans will find their way a him when seeking legal asistance. A man who has worked is hard as Attorney William A. Török, will understand hardworking people better than anyone else. Again, congratulations to lawyer Török. We sincerely wish him good luck and much success in his great profession! (fwr)------------v-----------NOTICE Br. 12, Pittsburgh, Penna. DELAY NO LONGER in GETTING YOURSELF INSURED because LIFE IS SO VERY UNCERTAIN Founders’ Month Membership Drive and Contest In commemoration of the fact that on February 20 and 21, 1886, thirteen Hungarian miners founded the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association, we herewith proclaim the month of February, 1944 “FOUNDERS’ MONTH” and announce a CONTEST in commemoration of the Founders of our Association, which is to begin on February 1, 1944 and end on February 27, 1944. The contest is open to all branch-managers and local, part-time organizers. The founders of our great organization considered as their chief aim THE GROWTH OF THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE VERHOVAY. True to their tradition, therefore, th;s contest‘is aimed to increase the membership of our organization. Consequently, the number of new members secured shall be the only deciding factor in this contest. Each and every application written and approved by the Home Office, shall count as one unit in the drive regardless of the amount or the class of insurance on which the application shall be written excepting the applications for membership in the Classes “A” and “B” of the Juvenile Order (with 15 and 25c monthly dues resp.) which count as one-third of a unit, that is, three applications for membership in either “A” or “B” Class in the Juvenile Order shall constitute one (1) unit in the contest. There shall be three winners in this contest each of whom shall be rewarded with a valuable prize. 1. ) The first prize shall be a wrist, or pocket-watch, of $60 value. 2. ) The second prize shall be a wrist, or pocketwatch of $50 value. 3. ) The third prize shall be a wrist, or pocketwatch of $40 value. The name of the winner and that of the Association as well as the occasion will be engraved on each of the prizes. The winners shall be entitled to make their own choice between a pocket or wrist-watch, but no other changes can be effected in the prizes announced. Our Association has been founded 58 years ago. We feel that we should celebrate each year with the writing of ten new members, which sets the minimum goal of this membership drive at 580 new members. This goal should not be difficult to achieve. If every branch, manager and local organizer participates in this drive, that goal should be exceeded by a far greater number. Circumstances are especially favorable now for such a, drive, since all those juvenile Class “A” and “B” members of our Association, who have attained the age of 16, must be transferred into the adult department. We are certain, therefore, that the three weeks designated for this drive, shall amply suffice for the attainment of this goal. We, the undersigned, are now beginning our new tasks in guiding the centralized organizational activities of our Association. We appeal to the managers and the local organizers to support us in this task and to make the 58th birthday of our Association a memorable one, by securing at least 580 new members. Hoping that every branch-manager and every local organizer will participate in this great contest, we wish all of you success and remain. fraternally yours: JOHN BENCZE, Supreme President, ALEXANDER GYULAY, Supreme Organizer T he institution of insurance is the most extensive cooperative movement devised by man.
