SECTION TWO ENGLISH EDITION New Year's Bay—the first, day of the calendar year—[ just begun, which is the' first day in January. Formerly, the legal year began; on Annunciation Day, March 25th, in England. It was in 1752 that this was changed to January 1st. Neio Year’s Bay — when all hearts beat high with new hope, and are full of joy and new resolutions— good resolutions to turn over a new leaf and make a new beginning. These re solutions are made in the greatest faith of carrying them out on the part of the individual. The old life and the old way of living is left far behind—almost forgotten—except as they affect us in the new year. This is a time when many new plans are also formulated, great plans that include the hope of their fulfillment before the year is out. But will these plans materialize? Only Time can tell; for the materialization depends not i only on the individual who j made these plans; but it also depends upon many outside influences beyond the control of the one who made the resolutions. Often, certain events take place that change the whole course of one's well- laid, previous plans. These events are inevitable, yet the individual often thinks they interfere with his life. Perhaps, to a degree, unforeseen events do interfere with one’s life; but on the other hand, it would seem as though some Higher Power has taken a hand in matters, and changed the whole course of a life to suit a better purpose. Environment also affects the most carefully - laid plans. Strange circumstances often happen that take one out of an environment into another overnight. New plans must be made to help the individual adjust himself to the new Story of the Christmas Bells The bells rang out on Christmas morn’— Telling us the story of when The little child, Jesus, was born, In a stable at Bethlehem. The little child did not cry; God’s angels protected him from danger; The star of east shining on high, Guided the wise men to the manger. The bells will again ring this Christmas morn’, We’ll all bozo our head and pray; As we recall how Jesus was born— So very long ago on Christmas day. —EMMA JENE EVANS, Age 14 Pricedale, Penna. conditions that surround him. Even people affect one’s planning and thinking to a certain degree. ..We may make a plan, and then someone will come along and voice his ideas and opinions regarding a certain matter; and if we think they are better than our own, we accept them, and immediately set about to change or modify our original plans. Thus, the most carefully made plans miscarry; or are changed; sometimes, abandoned completely; while a new set of resolutions and plans are set into action. But if a resolution is ivorth the time and effort to make, it surely ought to be worthy of being carried out to the full; otherwise, resolutions are not only a waste of time, but absolutely useless. Today, the greatest factor affecting plans is the second World War. Many boys’ lives are changed, or interferred with today. No matter what they plan, it goes astray; for there are other matters at hand that they must settle first, before they can make any plans of their own, for their future, individual happiness. New Year’s Day—another beginning—another year; a time when friends and neighbors wish each other a hearty, Happy New Year. What does the New Year hold for each of us? Will it bring the fulfillment of our most cherished dreams? Will it bring the end of this terrible world conflict? We can only pray that it will be ended this year; and work hard toward that end, never relaxing one moment, lest in that one moment we lose all that we are sacrificing and fighting for. So, with this thought in mind, let us make the effort that the New Year will be much brighter than the one just ended. Let us make the resolution that each one of us will do his utmost to help bring the war to an early end, so that when the New Year comes to an end next year, we can all say: “It has been a very happy year, indeed; for we made our resolutions and worked ceaselessly to keep them, and kept the faith and courage to carry on in spite of the many obstacles which came our way while doing our share of the work through the New Year!" n UCflR * 1IGCE M 11 E 11 December brings the holiday, When our hearts are light and gay; Season when the girls and boys Sing all day long of Christmas joys. In this month our Christ was born, Upon a cold and dreary morn’; To Him our greatest gift we bring, Our love; and softly praises sing. And then one night dear Santa comes Down the chimney; a tune he hums, A catchy tune of rare good cheer; For you and I were good this year. In a twinkling he is gone; Footprints vanished with the dawn; Holiday greetings we remember To send our friends in gay December.
