November 11, 1943 Verhovay Journal Page 5 Roll ’em Down the Lanes! The bowling season is getting lots oi success and into full swing again; now that the warm, soft sunshiny days of summer are over. It was fun to do nothing during vacation days, but look for the coolest spot in town or country, and just relax every muscle in one’s weary body, and think of nothing that would weary the mind. It was great fun to loll in the shade of the old apple tree, and sip from a glass of lemonade, cool and refreshing. But now that summer is over we must return to fall and winter activities with more enthusiasm and determination to “pull through the winter” — however dull; and dream of the next vacation. Since winter evenings seem so long, why not go in for bowling? It is just the thing needed to relax after a day’s hard work at the mill, store or office. Bowling is not only a body-building sport, but it is clean fun, and opens opportunities to meet and become acquainted with people whose manners and customs are far different than one’s own. Bowling is a great sport that is sweeping the country from coast to coast, for it is inexpensive. Defense programs have curtailed many activities. But bowling is one sport that everyone can indulge in without fear of lessening the war effort on the home front. In fact, it serves as a medium to relax tense nerves and build morale. The home front worker needs morale building as much as the boy on the fighting front. Why not form a team in your Branch and get into the swing of BOWLING? You’ll never know how much fun it can be until you’ve played it. ■ You need only roll the ball once, to realize just what fun it can be Picking up the ball for the first time does give you a feeling of apprehension, not knowing wheth er or not the ball will move forward toward the pins, or curve ' and roll slowly along the gutter until it reaches the end of the line to miss the pins by almost a yard. But take comfort in the thought that the pin-boy doesn mind when you miss the pins And don’t worry about the score, for the beginner has to start sometime; and even if you don’ score as high as some of the other players, just remember that this is your first game, while the others are seasoned players, who have had more practice during past seasons, and have learned to play the game by keeping on playing. The sooner you start playing the sooner you will learn. Competition helps to improve your playing and you can compare your scores with others. Remember, Bowling is a necessity during these tiring times. Learn to relax and have fun at the same time; for it is good health that will help you to keep going day after day in the factory, store or office. You must keep fit in order to be able to work, and earn, and save for a future. Don’t forget to invest some of your cash in War Bonds, and help bring the peace to a war-torn world. When our boys return from the battlefields, they will need sports help them forget the many horrors they faced on the fighting fronts; so keep on bowling and be in form to meet the competition they will give you. Chicago, Ind., played a match game with the Bowling Team of the American Sick Benefit and Life Insurance Association, formerly known as the Bridegeport Federation. In this game the Verhovay Greens came out victoriously, after a hard battle between the teams. It is in a game like this that a team’s mettle is tested, and shows the determination, courage and love of the sport which is brought to the fore. Continued success, Branch 130 Teams! He (meekly): My dear, you ought to get into this habit of meetless days. Local newspapers in two important defense centers caviied accounts a short time ago of two disastrous fires. They were nothing unusual. Similar occur fences are taking place all over the country, in one of these fires, flames swept through a planing mill and lumber yard doing an estimated $150,000 damage. In the other fire, an entire block in a congested district was wiped out, leaving 200 persons homeless. Damage was estimated at $100,000. At the end of this year, the total fire bill for the nation will amount to three or four hundred million dollars — a tremendous sum even in these days of billions. Who is to blame for this tragic and disastrous fire loss? No probing in the ashes of ruined buildings is necessary to find the answer, because everyone is to blame. We are a careless nation. Any fire prevention authority is familiar with the sickening record, and can establish proof of our national carelessness with a recital of needless destruction that makes a joke of our touted war conservation efforts. The truth is that there can be no real conservation until destruction of property by fire is effectively curbed. Also, as any fire prevention authority will testify, there can be no curbing of the fire loss in this country until individual citizens learn to take the simple precautions which are necessary to prevent it. Many agencies are striving to make Americans fire conscious. Fire depart; ments, city, state and Federal officials, together with private organizations, are constantly pounding home the lessons of fire prevention. If these lessons were but received in the spirit that they are given — a spirit of appreciation of the value of life and property — fire losses would curve downward in an amazingly short time.
