The men’s team now has four substitutes, believe it or not. Charles Szalai (who is Steve Horvath’s father-in-law) substitutes for Lucas when he’s working nights. Steve Horvath II (who is married to Mary Horvath, the gals’ substitute, and a brother-in-law to Nicholas and Steve Horvath the First) substitutes for Robb when he’s on the swing shift. George Kuritar has been substituting-for Bartko until that guy decides to come back. George will also sub when the other subs can’t be present. It’s a mixup, but lots Marie Gallovich________________ Ethel Koy ___________________ Mary Raffee __________________ Helen Kastura ________________ Jolán Lücas __________________ Mary Kuritar will be 429’s substitute bowler in the > questionable event that we are permitted (by Uncle Sam and his cohorts) to attend the National Verhovay Tournament in Pittsof fun as the fellows are all congenial. The games rolled by the males on January 14 were very good indeed, in spite of the fact that two new subs were inaugurated. One thing about bowling which should interest students of human nature — it certainly is a leveler of ages and sexes. Take our own teams, from 19 year olds to grandfathers. In the ladies’ league a mother bowls on one team, her daughter on another; a white haired grandmother strings along with an average of 158 — which ain’t hay, as the old saying goes. Some of the gals said not to print the scores for Jan. 20 as they were stinko. But shucks, that just goes to show you; we have our off moments along with the best of them. Besides it was so darn cold from the several feet of snow which was piled up along the sidewalks on our weary walk (yep, no street cars even) to the alleys, that we can be thankful for even such scores. Here’s the and weep: bad news, read ’em Jan. 13. Jan.20 102 85 123 103 135 105 133 120 131 119 122 129 85 101 79 93 71 79 90 98 133 131 100 135 107 130 100 75 72 134 burghthis spring. It has been decided bythe majority of the girlsthat we would do the same thing which was planned at the last Tournament. The team starts off with its regular members. Mary Kuritar will substitute in the 2nd game for low man in the first game and will sub. in 3rd game for low man (pardon me, woman in the second game. In this way, Mary, in spite of the fact that she works afternoons in a defense plant, will have the opportunity of bowling with the original team. Her average now is 118, slightly higher than our regular team (due to not bowling regularly — cause we can tell you, bowling every week wreaks havoc with one’s nice high average which is instituted at the beginning of the season). Mary was our high bowler last season and just cause Uncle Sam needs her services is no reason to pass her by this year. The men’s scores for Janary 14 as follows: John Fisher 128 122 145 Steve Horvath II. (for Daniel Robb) 110 131 139 George Kuritar (for Joe Bartko) 117 152 142 Louis Lucas 151 144 168 Steve Horvath I’ 189 140 157 There is friendly rivalry among the teammates for high single and high 3 game series. Robb was high with 183 until Steve Horvath I. copped honors with 189 — Steve has high 3 game series with 486 — Lucas a close second with 463. I believe the fellas could do better if the same 5 men would always bowl together — as it is, with swing shifts, not much better can be expected. HOW ABOUT THE HANDICAPS FOR ALL TEAMS, NOT ONLY THE WOMEN’S TEAMS? MAKE IT FAIR PLAY ALL AROUND, HUH? Fraternally, THE FERRET, Sport Editor.-------------v------------VERHOVAY F.I.A. BRANCH 96.
