Page 8 The Insurance Departmentof Pennsylvania Modifies Its Laws with Relation to Conventions The Board of Directors decided at its last meeting in favor of holding the convention of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association in the fall of this year. The Board of Directors, at that time, realised fully that the war effort of our nation requires a limitation of travel and that, furthermore, the holding of a national convention would require hotel and transportation facilities that muit be reserved for the war effort, and that, last but not least, it would be difficult to get leave for such delegates as are engaged in war-work. Nevertheless, the Board of directors felt, that it has to comply with the Insurance laws of the State of Pennsylvania which require the holding of a national convention as often as once in lour calendar years. f* 1 Since the meeting of the Board of Directors was adjourned, important changes have taken place of which the Insurance Commissioner of the State of Pennsylvania informed us in the following bulletin: lf “TO ALL FRATERNAL BENEFICIAL SOCIETIES ’AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN PENNSYLVANIA. 1 Section 3 of the Act of July 17, 1935, P.L. 1092, as amended by Act No. 74 approved May 3, 1943, to be effective as of September 1st, 1943, with relation to conventions or meetings provides: — (Underscoring indicates the amendment added by Act No. 74.) \ “That the meetings of the supreme or governing body and the election of officers representatives or 'delegates shall be held as often as once in four calendar years unless due to war emergency the government of the United States of America or any of its agencies has THE HOMESTEAD MERRY-GO-ROUND--------------------— BRANCH 430 -----------------------Verhovayak Lapja ________________________________________________________________________________________________ June 10,1943 SPORTS ROUNDUP It appears as though the final standings of the various bowling leagues havq been published in the JSport page of our Journal. The end of the bowling season throughout the V erhovay Pvt. Kohut sports realm has come. We can honestly say the end has been reached. To what will we now turn our attention? Softball and baseball? No, I don’t believe so. Those young men who previously made up our softball and baseball teams are now serving the better interests of our Country, which is as it should be. In the majority of our sporting events, we will more or less have to remain dormant until some future time. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS As I predicted in a recent column of / mine, Johnny Penchuk is home for the duration, and I understand he will soon accept a position in a defense plant... however, John has his mind set on an early trip to the altar, and as I understand it, it won’t be long... our best wishes are extended to Mrs. Joseph Beda for a speedy BY Pvt. Jul Orosz is with the Army Air Force in Mississippi, and doing a nice job so far. IMPRESSIONS AND REFLECTIONS Was interesting to learn that the Hon. Gregg L. Neel, Insurance Commissioner for Pennsylvania, said among other things, “he had been empowered as Insurance Commissioner to waive the requirement for conventions which otherwise would have to be held at least once in four years. The waiver of the legislation is to be permitted only at such times as these, and only as long as the war lasts”. These are important statements and can mean much to the Verhovay, especially this year, a Convention year. Hungary says “Nem” and I hope she means it. This was the title of an article which appeared in “The Youngstown Vindicator”. It dealt with Hungary’s refusal to meet Axis demands for men and materials. This article should be published in newspapers the country over, so that all of the people know definitely where Hungary stands in this world conflict. Our good friend, Sgt. John V. Jerkovich, writing from North Africa, dealt very intelligently with the problem facing the Allied countries in his timely article, “What Price, Pea-'e?” L for one, agree with him on the many points mentioned in his writing. * * * I’ll be seqjng you later in the month, again. 4 Pvt. Wm. C. Kohut, HDQ. Co. 1302nd S.U.R.C. limited or prohibited travel for meeting or convention •purposes in which event upon request by the society the Insurance Commissioner may at his discretion either ■waive the requirement that such meeting be held or extend the time for holding such meeting the privilege of so requesting such waiver or extension to be permitted Íonly during such time as the limitation or prohibition on travel shall continue.” Request to the Insurance Commissioner for extension or waiver should be in the form of a resolution of the Board of Directors or similar managing body duly attested by the secretary. The resolution should contain: ► 1.) Identification of the convention oY meeting. i 2.) The need for waiver or extension. 3.) The specific provisions of the constitution and bylaws under which the society will function should the request for waiver or extension be granted. 4. i That a request for waiver or extension has been approved by a majority of the subordinate lodges or bodies, 5.) A stipulation that a waiver or extension if granted will not be prejudical to the best interest of the members. 6.) An agreement that the convention or meeting so waived or extended will be held within a reasonable and stipulated time after the limitation or prohibition of travel is lifted. / Very truly yours,GREGG L. NEEL, Insurance Commissioner. The present change in the Insurance Laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania creates a situation which did not exist when the last meeting of the Board Of Directors was held last March. The modification of the Insurance Laws makes it Optional with the Branches and Districts, whether or not the Convention should be held this year. It is up to each Branch and District to decide whether a Convention should be held. If they feel that their patriotic duty comes first, then they may vote to postpone the Convention, and set aside the decision of the Board of Directors to hold the Convention.
