THE HOMESTEAD MERRY-GO-ROUND------------------------ BRANCH 430 -----------------------BY WILLIAM C. KOHUT March 11, 1943_______________________________________y er}i0vay Lapja Page 3 Uncle Sam's Verhovays KLIMKO BROTHERS IN THE NAVY SPORTS DOWNGRADE: I am quite sure that the announcement in the last issue of our Journal regarding the cancellation of the National Verhova y Bowling Tournament created quite a bombshell among our loyal Verhovay bowlers. The announce-Mr. Kohut ment more or less caught the majority of our good friends off guard inasmuch as the preparations for the tournament were allowed to proceed almost to within three weeks of the actual play-offs, before a definite stand was taken. Needless to say, I greatly bemoan the fact that this has come about, but then, too, I realize we are in the midst of a war and certain sacrifices are sometimes necessary. This time my good friends, our Verhovay bowlers, are the ones to suffer. My last column contained a suggestion that a District Bowling Tournament be held within a radius of one hundred miles of a Verhovay nerve center. In this connection, I am in receipt of a communication from my good friend, Captain S. Sutch, Jr. of Verhovay Branch 20’s Bowling team who writes that we should attempt the next best thing to a National Tournament, and that would be District Bowling Tournaments. Thus Branch 20’s Team from Fairport Harbor, Ohio, would play teams located within a radius of one hundred miles, let us say of Youngstown, Ohio, an active Verhovay nerve center. The District Tournament could be held in Youngstown, Ohio, home of Director Brogley, and 1 am sure everybody would be happy and far more content, then if we left the matter just Where it is now — — —cancelled — stop. To give you an idea as to how friends and bowlers feel throughout the Verhovay circuit, about the playing of a tournament of some kind, I will quote from Captain S. Sutch, Jr.’s letter, “All the bowlers and members of Branch 20 hope that this plan (District Bowling Tournaments) can be worked out.” There is little question that this item will be brought up at the coming Director’s meeting, in Pittsburgh, beginning March, 15th, 1943, and I have been reasonably assured that certain steps will be taken, especially among our Directors representing the youth of our organization, to bring into being some type, kind or form of a tournament. MEET THE NEW SECRETARYTREASURER At a meeting held at Ann’s Flower Shop, 8th Avenue, Homestead, Pa. on Saturday evening, March 6, 1943, a new Secretary- Treasurer was elected to take over the duties of the present Branch Manager, your lowly columnist. Mrs. Kohut will be at Ann’s Flower Shop on March 20th to collect all insurance payments —• please co-operate by taking them to her. Yours truly is preparing for more adventuresome duties elsewhere. Eleven members of a secret Belgian underground organization responsible for aiding United Nations fliers shot down over German occupied territory were executed by Nazi firing squads recently over a 3-day period. They were charged by their German captors with "aiding the enemy." Here in America we can aid in the fight against Hitler without endangering our lives if we do our work diligently and buy War Bonds every pay day. WSS 741G V. S. TrMWry D*pt.
