Fage 2 .LOVE IS NOT BLIND BRANCH 503 Our Junior secretary, Anna Talaber who lives on Mason Avenue), proudly displays an engagement ring received from Frank Grebenar. It has come to the knowledge of one of my stooges that Anna accepted it on the condition that Frank, not now a Verhovayan, will soon become an active member of our branch. We hope it will be soon, Frank, and we’ll be awaiting... Eleanor Stanko also has received an engagement ring, from Johnnie Bodnar. Eleanor’s favorite song, so it seems, has been “Oh Johnnie!’’ We hope to hear from both of you, Eleanor. Speaking of engagement rings, our young 20 year old Margaret Miller is the owner of a beautiful ring. She has recently become engaged, and we haven’t had time as yet to find out the details. Tell us about them, will you, Margaret? And what is Tony Kovács, Chairman of our Entertainment Committee, waiting for? Before, he said that he expected to be called to the Army, but since he’s over the age limit set by the war department in the new ruling, there’s nothing to hold him back, ... eh, Tony? Anne Horvath, “Miss Hungary” at the 1938 Chicago Auto Show, has just returned from a vacation in a resort in Indiana. She is sc tanned that Secretary Balogh failed to recognize her at first Anyway, Anne never forgets the club members and wherever she goes she sends a greeting card to the branch. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Filczer and baby left for vacation to enjoy the good old hospitality of the South. We wish them a most enjoyable time and hope that when they return their baby girl will be enrolled in the Verhovay ranks. O Secretary Balogh! Get your pen ready! Private Paul Szabady was a visitor here over the Foúrth, coming from Camp Lee, Virginia. Private Szabady went to call on Secretary Balogh, who, unfortunately, was not at home, being with company from Muskegon Heights, Michigan. Write us soon, Paul . . . “Szép élet a komisz élet, De sokat kell érte szenvedni...” Private Joseph Petti, one of our members, also visited over the Fourth. He is stationed at Scott Field, where one of Uncle Sam’s airfields is located. “Halló! Itt Chicago beszél . . . Máté Bácsi otthon van?” And Mrs. Máté answered: “Épen most jött be.” Yes, sir, these were the first words that Secretary Balogh spoke over the long distance telephone from Chicago to Grafton, Ohio, on Monday, July 14th. The reason for the call: Máté bácsi was Secretary Balogh’s best friend and companion while — Hungary with the 1939 Verhovay winner group. Secretary Balogh telephoned Máté bácsi on the second anniversary of their departure form New York to Hungary, in 1939. And was Máté bácsi surprised! Said he: “Az Isten áldja meg, Feri Köszönöm szépen a megemlékezését.” He then invited the Balogh family to his farm in Grafton. Although a new three story home on the far north side was bought by the Fury family, we hope that Kathryn will attend our meetings as regularly as before.-----The Scribe of Kőszeg . Verhovayak Lapja July 31, 1941 (fönt a Szabó hegyen.) Echos from Lorain — Branch 372 The members of Branch 372 are going through extreme efforts to organize three bowling teams. The sports committee is comprised of members of Branches 17 and 372 and are considering two teams, one of men and one of women. John Palagyi, Sr., George Jávor and Alex Mrasz represent Branch 17, while John Palagyi, Jr., Julius Chaszar and Joe Fiiak are representing Branch 372. We are urging all members interested in' bowling to cooperate with the committee that we might organize at least two noteworthy teams. * * * The greatly improved Verhovay club gave, the Lorain Crystals, first half Class A champions, a surprisingly good battle July 13th. The ten inning fray was called with a score at 4-4. Gawlik, Crystal hurler, allowed but one scratch hit ii the eight innings he worked. He pitched six frames and gave way to Schneider, Crystal hurler, who gave up four hits and four runs in the seventh and eighth frames. Gawlik went back to the hill to finish the game. * * * The first Lorain County Milk Festival is over, and íappy Tired officials estimated attendance at the three day festival at 55,000. The outstanding feature of the festival, especially to members of the Verhovay branches, was the return of Steven Dohanos, native son and nationally famed artist who recently gained fame as an illustrator. Mr. Dohanos, whom most of us remember, worked here in the steel mills, studied painting in Cleveland and later skyrocketed to national fame. We are proud of the fact that Mr. Dohanos was chosen chief judge of the festival. He made exceptional efforts to fly here by airplane from Massachusetts to honor, cur fair city and his home town. We join words in thanking Mr. Chick and Mr. Davis, owners of dairies here, and exceptionally faithful cooperators with the Verhovay branches, for their kind sacrifices in promoting this unique affair. * * * As the second half championship race got under way Sunday, July 20th, the Lorain Verhovays took a 14-6 walloping at the hands of the C. W. Anchors’ aggregation. Trailing, 6-3, after three innings, the Anchor sluggers opened fire and rolled over the Verhovays. Mike Timko, winning hurler, clouted a homer, as did the Verhovay hurler, Bob Pekare. Timko and Tomasic each belted three hits. * * ♦ ‘HIM-STITCHING’ A stitch in time saves a soldier a lot of embarrassment—so Mrs. J. H. Lynch is inaugurating a free sewing service for men in uniform. Office hours are from 1 to 4. p. m. Wednesdays at her home. A thought or two: We cannot expect always to be happy; by exercising evil as well as good, we become wiser.
