LET TRUTH BE UNCONFINED Page 4 November 27, 1941 VERHOVAY LADIES AUXILIARY Branch 96 — Chicago, III. Coolness, and absence of beat and haste, indicate fine qualities. A gentleman makes no noise; a lady is serene. —Emerson Chicago Branch 503 held a bunco party on October 17, at the Immigrant State Bank Building, 333, W. North Avenue. Several Chicago Hungarian lodges were represented, among them Verhovay Branch 164, Woodman of the World, Bridgeport Rákóczi Branch 129. Thanks are due to those who assisted in making this affair a great success. Especially do the officials want to express their gratitude to those lolio contributed so generously with gifts, among them being Mrs. Eugene Petrovits, Mrs. Ethel Szay, Anne Talaber, Junior Secretary. Mrs. Frank Balogh, Mrs. Joseph Szenassy, Anne Grebinar, Mrs. Penzinger, and Mrs. Stephen László. Information has reached us that Eleanor Sztanko and John Barnak are to be married soon—perhaps by the time this article appears in print. We’ll check up on the details, anyway. Thank you, Mr. Orosz! Thomas Sullivan of East Pittsburgh Branch 152 transferred to Branch 503, recently. Mr. Sullivan is now working in Chicago for National Defense. Before he came here, however, John Orosz, Secretary of Branch 152, suggested his transfer to Branch 503. That’s why the officials desire to convey their appreciation to you, Mr. Orosz. Talk is prevalent that two bowling teams are to be organized. The men who are eagerly bent on this task include Joseph Szenassy, Frank Balogh, Louis Puskarits, Tony Kovács and Joe Fabian. Anne Talaber, the Junior Secretary, is all set to beat the men. She is about to organize about 12 young ladies who have expressed their wish to form a boivling team. Watch out, men! The officials wish to thank Supreme Treasurer John Szalanczy for well wishes he sent to the branch. There ivill be a Christmas party, Mr. Szalanczy, as you may already knoio. Can you come to visit us? And bring along Mr. Gyorffy, before he kinda forgets how Chicago really looks like. Visitors to every affair of Branch 503 are Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Zoltán, whom we are proud to have with us. We wish every member would follow their example because it shows the triie spirit of fraternalism. Margaret Marosvolgyi and Stephen Huzianyi recently publicly announced their engagement, which is good news indeed in view of the fact that both are loyal and active members of Branch 503 and are well-liked and popular not only in Verhovay circles but among the Chicago Hungarians in general. Margaret came to this country from Kőszeg, Hungary, less than two years ago, with the intention of furthering her studies, then returning to her native land, but mysterious Fate intervened and Stephen Huzianyi was the fortunate young man to win Margaret’s hand. Stephen, of course, needs no introduction, for he has been numbered among the most active Verhovayans and Hungarians in the city of Chicago. We wish Margaret and Stephen a very liberal share of life’s happiness! —The Scribe of Kőszeg--------------o--------------“ BRANCH 434 South Bend, Indiana Verliovayak Lapja Election of officers will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 1941, 7:30 P. A hat parade was the major event of the Halloween party held in connection with our November meeting. Majority of the members brought their funny hats, created by themselves, and Lilly Dache certainly hasn’t a thing on our hat stylists. Theresa Bankó collected first prize; Mrs. John Szalanczy and Mrs. Gergely Bence shared equally for second. Winners of other games were Mrs. Ida Krai and Miss Irene Bankó. A small gift was given Mrs. Szalanczy, who left Chicago and is now residing in Pittsburgh. Mrs. Szalanczy was a staunch Auxiliary member and her presence will be greatly missed. We hope that it won’t take her long to adjust herself to her new surroundings. ARMY NOTES—Army boys of Branch 96 and also the sons and brothers of the branch and Auxiliary members will be sent cookies and candy next month. All Auxiliary members are requested tojoring a pound or pound and a half of cookies (must be homemade) to our next meeting, when they will be wrapped. The packages will be mailed the following day, so the boys should get them a while before Christmas. Sgt. A1 Almasy, National Guardsman and member of the 33rd Division at Camp Forrest, Tennessee, was home for Armistice Day. He also took part in the big parade here in Chicago. BOWLING — Monday nights still finds the girls at the Roseland Recreation, each trying her very best to bring up that bowling average. Kathleen Uhlean is the newest bowling recruit and also the leader of the cheering section. The girls of Branch 164 will bowl against the girls of the Auxiliary Sunday, December 7th, at 3:45 P. M. Combat will take place at the Roseland Recreation, 11313 Michigan Avenue. Rooters will be very welcome. “DIRK” FULOP—For some time I have been reading your humorous articles and I can truthfully say that I’ve chuckled thru all of them, as have all of your other readers, I am sure. Please keep it up, your contributions are worth waiting for. Louis Prokop will reach the ripe old age of 21 on December 1st. Louis’ niece, Patsy Prokop, will see her first birthday cake on December 22nd. Best wishes to both of you. Members who attended the regular meeting of Branch 96 Friday, November 14th, were in for a great surprise when in the midst of discussions Mr. John Szalanczy, past president of the branch and present Supreme Treasurer, walked in. The meeting was in quite a turmoil for a few minutes until greetings were exchanged. Mr. Szalanczy was here to represent the Home Office at a testimonial dinner on November 16th in Indiana Harbor, where he presented Mr. Gabriel Horvath and Mr. Stephen Dull, officers of Branch 229, the “Appreciated” medal and the Testimonial Document for twentyfive years of service as officers. We hope Mr. Szalanczy will have the opportunity to drop in on us again some time in the near future. Relatives and friends were on hand to help Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Uhlean, Sr. celebrate their fortieth wedding anniversary October 28th. They are the parents of Stephen, who is Juvenile manager of our branch, James and Matthew, Jr. All three Uhlean boys have been quite active in Verhovay sports in past years. Branch 96 extends congratulations and best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Uhlean, and wish them many more happy anniversaries. The officers and committee of the branch met November 5th and made plans for a membership drive to start January 1st and continue until June 30th of 1942. This drive will be for members of Branch 96 only. More about prizes and rules and regulations in the following issztes of the Journal. Next meeting of the Auxiliary will be December 7tU at the usual place. In addition to the cookies, members are to bring a grab bc-g prize. My next contribution won’t appear until after Christmas, so I want to take this opportunity to wish all Verhovay Journal contributors and readers a very Merry Christmas.
