Such news today is Shulton's new Desert Flower make-up and toiletries. Usually your editor does not indulge in adjectives of the superlative degree, but today I break even that rule! During a recent visit to New York I stopped into Shulton’s showrooms to view their new releases and preparations for Christmas. Well, 1 took one look at their Desert Flower line, and decided immediately that I wanted the entire ensemble, for I found it the most excitingly modern and different release in New York! Now, for the first time, a new interpretation has been given to modern beauty in fragrance and packaging. Shulton’s Desert Flower combines a delicate femininity with the crispness of today’s sophisticate. The mystery of the great American desert and the fragile beauty of the flowers found there have inspired a fragrance at once debonair and exotic ... make-up shades subtle yet brilliant. Desert Flower toiletries, including toilet water, dusting powder, talcum, soap and perfume, enable the woman to complete her toilette in a symphony of scent, from the soap in her bath through lipstick and perfume. Just as Desert Flower make-up and toiletries complement milady’s individual beauty, so, too, the containers complement her personality in the home. Created of lustrous, exquisite MYSTITE, these containers are as durable as the spirit of the modern woman. Here, too, Shelton has given a new interpretation to the modern, for having been working on the perfection of this new plastic product for two years, these bottles and boxes now become permanent accessories for the dressing table. Refills are available for the MYSTITE cases. Hand-carved delicate desert flowers are imprisoned in pale pink MYSTITE, capturing all the romance and mystery of the desert. Five different tones of face powder form individual backgrounds for five different colors of lipstick and rouge (paste or dry). The lipstick shades are: Serapi... a blue red for the blonde in the evening, or the brunette by day. Fireheart... a red red, is becoming to brunette and blonde alike ... even the unusual redhead will be enhanced by this vivid red. Devil’s Brush... bright red, the perfect color for the lightskinned blonde, redhead or brunette. Granada Rose... a rosy red for the ladies whose tresses have turned silver. Toyon... a deep lucious red particularly suited for the suntanned and olive complexions. The face powder shades: Moonblush... a light, natural shade for the Dresden-China type of «kin. Good for evening. Dune Beige ... a peachy rachel for the light skinned brunette. Mesa... a natural shade dark enough to blend with the skin tones of the redhead or light complexioned blonde or brunette. Desert Haze ... slightly darker than Mesa, for the darker toned brunette and the titian-haired woman whose skin has a bronzy tone. Toyon ... a deep shade for the olive-skinned woman. Desert Flower make-up and toiletries are now available at most toiletries counters. Another bit of big news is the fact that Pine makes, its debut in Shulton’s Early American Toiletries Family. From the wide expanses of the American desert we now turn to the New England woods for the crisp, pungent scent of Early American Pine. The brisk fragrance, at once vigorous and soothing, will remind men of the bracing northern wood. Women need have no fear that the tangy scent of the Pine soap, bath oil and bubble bath will interfere later with perfume of another odor.. The Pine Bath Oil softens the hardest water, while the Bubble Bath creates luxurious clouds of foam that last throughout the entire bath. To complete the pine bath, Shulton has created a quick-lathering superfatted soap, kind to the most sensitive skin ... available in two sizes, toilet or bath. The soft green color, too, blends with almost every bathroom decoration. These bath accessories should appeal to both men and women. This, then, is my big news for today... the latest news from Shulton! Well, friends, your old Aunt Mary has been having some time of it since hunting season opened. You know, old as I am, I still have a leaning towards hats with those long feathers on them. Well, with open season on pheasants, I’m ’most afraid to put my head out the door! You never know when one of those would-be Daniel Boones is going to turn into a head-hunter! They’re so impulsive, and after all a feather’s a feather in any language, and who knows when you’ll find a quail roosting on your mail box. So this is the time of the year when your Aunt Mary sticks to her fireside knitting. But, speaking of hunting season, is there anything more tasty, than game or venison that melts in your mouth? Remember what Julius Caesar said: “Let’s Carve him as a dish fit for the gods, not hew him as a carcass”? Since GADABOUTS Hello! With the New York -Social Season on the verge of opening with the National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden, I just thought of a few loose ends I have to tie... items left over from the baseball season and such .. . thank you notes I should have written before ... and more “and such” affairs ... So today I shall try to cover them all, before plunging into the social whirl for the season! First of all... I attended the opening of the World Series ... and although I didn’t throw in the first ball, methinks I could have done just as well!... Oh, and yeS ... my team lost! So from now on there will be no more getting trampled by crowds of 68,500 fans for this gal... A nice football or hockey game with lots of blood and gore is more to my liking... so long as I’m not in on the blood and gore side of it anymore! ... My right shin is still a sickly shade of green ... it being November One on my Hit (or Kick) Parade! But, the season being over, I shall now place a “Requiescat in Pace” sign over baseball and turn to other items of interest... Ever been to Greenwich Village? You have? Well, me too! But never before have I hit the spots I did during this last venture into the land of Bohemia. Started off in the really swell clubs like the Village Barn ... Kelly’s ... and a few others ... gradually working our way down into those dark, little places with the squeaking doors ... and brother, I do mean squeaking doors!,.. The atmosphere was eerie enough, but to have doors creaking open and shut before your very eyes without knowing who was doing the opening and shutting ... well, I didn’t know whether to be petrified with fear or to just act blasé. Will hand the Village this, though, you can find the most interesting murals painted on most of the walls ... guess some of the artists do the painting for a few square meals. The Distribution of Orchids Department hands out floral decorations to— Ethel Merman, for her very swell work in the Broadway production, “Panama Hattie” .., (Continued on Page 8) the days of Nimrod, the first hunter, every household has been stirred to its foundation every now and then by a male member stalking in with some wild thing “plucked from the forest,” and demanding that “you cook it.” Ah! but can you? Well, here’s an easy way to delicious Broiled Quail ... Quail Salt Melted butter Pepper Lemon Parsley Currant jelly Toast Sprinkle halved, cleaned quail, with breast bone removed, with salt, and pepper, brush with melted butter and broil for fifteen minutes on a brisk fire. Turn frequently. When done serve, garnished with parsley on toast with currant jelly. Broiled venison steak should be placed in a hot, buttered broiler, and broiled with a quick brisk fire. Turn every ten seconds for the first minute. After that turn occasionally until cooked on both sides. Venison should always be served rare. Roast venison is prepared the same as roast lamb. For a good, hot drink that will bring ahs and ohs, plus much smacking of lips from your hunt guests, try this Hot Horse Show Punch as suggested by Gabriel Lúgot, executive chef of the Waldorf-Astoria. The recipe makes twenty servings. Heat to a foam in a large saucg pan (do not boil) two bottles of brandy, two bottles of champagne, one pound of sugar, one pound of ripe pineapple cut in cubes and crushed. Transfer to punch bowl. Pour on top • little brandy, set aflame and allow to burn one minute. Serve in heated wine glass with spoon. P. S. It’s heavenly! Now, I imagine, it is time to inject a recipe that will delight your youngsters. So, Honey Cup Cakes come next__ 2 cups whole wheat flour 4 teaspoons baking powder V4 téaspoon salt Vi teaspoon soda 2 eggs (unbeaten) % cup vegetable oil 114 cups sour milk 2 tablespoons honey Mix and sift together flour, baking powder, salt and soda. Stir and add eggs, vegetable oil, sour milk and honey. Mix well. Pour into greased cupcake tins and bake in hot oven (400 degrees F.) for thirty minutes. Here is a more than tempting Autumn Salad that is sure to bring raves from the family.., Bring 2 Vi cups apple sauce to the boiling point. Add Vi cup sugar, two tablespoons red cinnamon candies and 1 tablespoon gelatin that has been softened with 2 tablespoons cold water. Stir well. Add V4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Pour into individual molds. Chill until firm, and serve on curly endive after unmolded. Garnish with cream cheese balls. Well, friends, that’s all for this time... and as I said, if your Aunt Mary comes through hunting season safely, I’ll be back again soon! ’—bye. —AUNT MARY.
