How would you like to “put on your hair with your hat”? ... be blonde, sweet and feminine in the morning, a titian intellectual in the afternoon and a brunette femme fatale in the evening? How would you like to wear any hat, by changing your coiffure to conform with it in less time than it takes to run a comb through your hair? Does all this sound like a fantasy from “Lady in the Dark”? Well, it happened in real life in the Zurich Room of the Salon of Helena Rubinstein, at a preview showing of Coiffmetics. Coiffmetics, a review of coiffures, cosmetics and chapeaux, introduced some startling innovations in the field of hair styling, all originated by Madame Rubinstein who introduced the upsweep to American women several years ago. The coiffure news of Coiffmetics includes: parted hair again, a relief from the unbroken line of the pompadour; braids and pigtails in abudance, including a Mexican looped pigtail; reverse rolls and curls culminating in a dramatic “reverse pompadour.” The biggest surprise and most startling news of Coiffmetics was a series of utterly new, utterly different “hat-dos”... hats with false hair pieces of synthetic hair attached. These give a woman as many different personalities as she wishes, and prove that she can wear any hat she takes a fancy to... toque or cloche, cover-up or off the face... as long as her coiffure is right! These “hat-dos” were developed by Mr. Michael of the Rubinstein Salon, and represent the first time hats and coiffures have been wedded in one artistic unit. Now, at last, a woman need not be a slave to one coiffure o’r to one hair color... or to one personality type. Would you like to wear a thick red braid with a mauve wool turban? It doesn’t matter if your hair is short and brown... the red braid is part of the turban, and once your own hair is concealed underneath ••. presto!.,. you’re an exotic redhead. Or, if it’s a down-in-the-back hat you’ve a yen for and your upsweep won’t permit, you needn’t harm a hair on your head ... just put on a hat with its own beautifully coiled chignon, attached! And, for cocktails under soft lights, you might essay the ultimate in drama with a silverblue coiffure attached to a wine velvet cocktail toque. Coiffmetics opened with a series of five daytime coiffures, inspired by five important defense organizations to which American women are now contributing their time and energy: Women Flyers of America, American Women’s Volunteer Services, United Service Organizations, American Red Cross, and British American Ambulance Corps. (1) Daytime Coiffure for Women Flyers of America created by Mr. Michael combs the hair forward toward the face, fitting the back of the head like a pilot’s cap and frames the face in a soft, sleek halo. (2) Daytime Coiffure for the American Woman’s Volunteer Services by Mr. Bernard is a distinctive grey-haired coiffure parted on the side and waved softly in front, with a swirl from one side to the other. (3) For the United Service Organizations Mr. Edward carries out the trend for shorter hair ... a further interpretation of that new waved feeling in a series of waves moving upward. (4) For the American Red Cross Mr. Bernard developed a charming braided peasant coiffure, parted on the side with the braid worked into the waves, and the hair pulled severely away from the face. (5) For the British American Ambulance Corps Mr. Edward uses the new Looped Mexican Pigtail hair-do. The hair is parted, worn sleekly on the sides, and arranged in two looped pigtails behind each ear. The second part of Coiffmetics showed how quickly these Daytime Defense Coiffures could be changed into glamoroused perfumed evening coiffures by a brief rearrangement and the addition of a permanently perfumed hair ornament. These coiffures included the Apple Blossom Coiffure, Town Sophisticate, Heaven-Sent, Gardenia and Gala Performance Coiffures. The evening capes worn by the models were created by Frank-Wraps. High spots of the show, of course, were the startling new “hat-dos” which consisted of: (1) The Brunette Femme Fatale in a daring off-the-face turban of striped maloula velvet with a gleaming black bang and braided chignon which gave the features an exotic Oriental appearance. (2) The Blonde Charmer in a little black “Manet” trimmed with powder blue velvet and blue ostrich curls, all attached to a red-blonde plastic coiffure done in soft reverse curls. (3) The Gay Nineties Blonde in a black off-the-face hat, complemented with a Lillian Russell Coiffure featuring big bang curls on the forehead. (4) The Titian Intellectual wearing a softly draped mauve turban attached to a thick titian braid. (5) The Auburn Career Girl in a black off-the-face soleil joined with a sleek bang and waves on the sides. (6) The Chestnut Brown Poetess wearing a romantic mink sailor enhanced by a brown satin jersey snood knotted under the chin, plus demure auburn waves peeping out from under the mink brim. (7) The Silverhaired Siren in a black pillbox attached to a sleek coronet roll around the face. (8) The Silverhaired Aristocrat in a ruby-red velvet toque with an inverted bang over the forehead and waves falling into a soft page-boy in back. (9) The Blonde Femme du Monde wearing a huge brown felt beret attached to a blonde forward moving coiffure. (10) A Blonde Glamour Girl in a moss green velvet toque trimmed with mink in the oldfashioned way to which was attached a blonde reverse pompadour. ((All plastic hair pieces by Stylewear Wig Company.) Aunt Mary's Column “Beware! Beware! Hollowe’en ’s in the air!” Time once more for a childish prank or two, for the person w'ho is too old for that is missing a lot in life. How well I remember my “tick-tack” days, the loose front gates, and the pile of leaves on the neighbor’s porch. Oh yes, your Aunt Mary had her share of fun! And you know, one oi those old time favorites has come right along writh me through the y ears ... Taffy Apples ... do they sound familiar? Well, you select small, firm apples... red ones, and you wash, stem, and run wooden skewers through each. Boil two cups of brown sugar and one half cup hot water until it threads. Add one tablespoon of lemon juice and stir in. Dip apples in syrup, turning over and over until each apple is thoroughly coated. Stand on wax paper to cool and harden. What with Fall Fashion Revues, the beginning of the Fall Social Season, and the World Series in the air, I haven’t had much time to myself lately. Acting as commentator at a few Style Shows I now find my little black note book simply overflowing with late fall and early winter news! Are you ready? Well... I find most of the clothes classified under about ten headings, namely, The Going Back to School... or Campus Clothes These include plaids galore__ the more the merrier! Another clever color combination here is cinnamon and gold. Plenty of free action backs ... and swing plus swish in the skirts. Another favorite at this time of the year is a nice plate of Cocoanut Pop-Corn Crisps ... 1 cup light brown sugar 1 tablespoon butter Vz cup chopped nut meats 14-cup molasses 1 pint crisp popped com 1% cups shredded cocoanut Place the sugar, molasses and butter in a sauce pan and cook to the hard ball stage. Pour over the popped corn, nut meats, and cocoanut well mixed. Press down in the pan with a knife until even; when cold cut into squares. What hits the spot better right now than a good cold glass of fresh apple cider and pretzels? They make a swell combination for Junior and Peggy’s little friends who drop in after school for a snack, too. Fresh apple cider... the nectar of the gods! Pumpkins are on the way... and right now your Aunt Mary's mouth is watering so badly for a good piece of pumpkin pie, she’s having trouble with her “set o’ uppers”...! A lot of people don’t add nutmeg .to their pumpkin custard, but to me it just doesn’t taste right without that spice. Try it sometime. Speaking of parties for the youngsters, here is a recipe for Peanut Cookies that is sure to solve your pastry problem .., 1 cup flour % teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup chopped peanuts Vs cup sugar Vi cup milk 1 egg 1 teaspoon lemon juice Sift dry ingredients together. Add melted butter to beaten egg. Add milk and lemon juice, and mix well with the dry ingredients to make soft dough. Add peanuts; mix well and drop by spoonfuls on greased pan. Bake in oven 375 degrees about twenty minutes. ’Bye again! —AUNT MARY. Next, we have the Station Wagon Group ... two piece corduroy suits ... mostly red ... belted for trim fitting waistline. Green wool and plaid make an ideal combination for any redhead ... if you’re lucky enough to be a red-head! Number three is the Costume Suit... ideal for chilly evenings when you don’t want to wear a heavier coat. These suits have a complete dress ... wool... under a clever jacket trimmed with fur... mostly Cross Fox. Group four consists of Velvets! You wear the coat on one side and it’s fur ... you change it to the other side and—presto—it’s a stunning woolen swagger affair. Matching skirt and ascot. Ideal for both formal and informal wear. Suits and sport coats come next... I see that three piece plaid suits are leading by a nose! Beige coats trimmed with Cat Lynx are more than good, too. While green plaid trimmed with Snow Top Fox is too, too divine! Suits are both single and double breasted ... depends on what you prefer... high lights are on new pocket arrangements and skirts. In group number seven we have the Date Dress! These include most anything a bit “fussy”... there are new versions of the Sailor dress , . black crepe with oodles of blue... baby blue ... velvet bows and trimmin’s.
