Fage 4 September 11, 1941 We're in the Army Now! Exclusive to Verhovay Journal... Well, h£re I am back in Louisiana again, reporting our latest activities. Chiggers, spiders, dust and rain have become constant companions. In this second maneuver we have covered quite a bit of territory. We went swimming ‘ in the Sabine River, border of Louisiana-Texas. Visiting in Texas, we found the females plentiful and .. ah-h-h! ... bootiful! It is no lie about this Southern hospitality. The people invite the soldiers, showing them the towns, and ' invariably the soldier partake of those dee-licious Southern dishes. It is amazing how few soldiers report for medical attention in this place where the heat is intense and insects plentiful. The food on maneuvers is sufficient and well cooked. Drinking water is always available. No sooner than a new camp is set up the boys find places where they can go swimming or at least take a bath and wash their clothes. Then the 112th Engineers move in and set up portable showers which make bathing and washing easier. After us follows a portable canteen unit • where the boys can buy soap, stationery, soft drinks, beer, candy, film and other miscellaneous articles. And in the event the soldier has no money, he may get a canteen book with tickets in it to a value of $3.00, on a promissory signature that he will pay this amount on the following payday. And does it work! I’ll say it does —when fellows will wind up owing anywhere from three to nine dollars per month on canteen books. Although the boys are sending out letters, they are disappointed in the incoming mail, which seems to have taken a great slack. I urge the people back home to write oftener, even if only a card, and let their soldier boys know the last minute developments at home. The girls especially should write more often, as the morale of the fellows depends largely on knowing that they are not forgotten by the female species. Will keep on the alert. Watch for more news in the next edition. To Mystricky, Branch 366 ... I vant tu tank Branch 366 fir da svell vay day treated mee on mye firlough. Without your consideration and the letters I received from you, there would have been many empty moments that I would have spent. Note to Verhovay Home Office . . . Horvath, will get back at yours truly (the unexpected usually turns up, J. J.). The boys claim that the reason why they did not go out of town fpi their vacation is due to lack of funds. Now, now, J. J., could it have been “Miss X,” who held your interest at our neighborhood swimming pool the last Saturday of your vacation? A few of our fortunate members to take the trips they planned were our treasurer, Cal Karanya, and his wife, who traveled by boat to Detroit and Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sikora spent a appropriate, and I know that all the boys are looking forward to receiving theirs soon. Fraternally, “BUCK PRIVATE’’ (A Verhovay Member)--------: o:--------BRANCH 442 NOTICE California, Pennsylvania Branch 442 has postponed all meetings for the summer months. Meetings will be resumed on October 12, 1941. Dues may be paid at the home of the secretary, Mrs. Paul Zella. Fraternally, Mrs. PAUL ZELLA, Secretary. Cleveland, Ohio few days in Chicago. Perhaps J. J. will enlighten you on their visit to Cedar Point. There were so many of our out of town friends present at our Verhovay Day, August 17th, that it would take almost two pages to write up ^about the day’s events. We wish to thank all of you for helping to make our Verhovuy Day a success. Some of you will remember our “Dairyman from Buffalo, •-•ranch 383,” Joseph S. Taylor, who has a way about him that did not pass unnoticed, and he didn’t have trouble “digging up the past.” You didn’t miss a thing, did you, J. S.? The eyes had it. Had I known you would be here, I would have taken a Belle Vernon Special, or do you wish us to send you the “Special Belle”? Our gang are A-l ticket sellers and did their share of the work faithfully. More news of our Verhovay Day will probably appear in J. J.’s column. Thanks for the magazine, “Buddy,” but when I went on reading it, I found that pages 65-66 were torn out! R.S.V.P. Belated best wishes to “Mysriooper.” How about breaking the silence and resuming your contributions to our Journal? Going “stag” is the girls’ latest favorite fun, and, rain or shine, once we girls get started we arrive in time. The boys must have envied us our good time, because they decided to “go stag to Detroit,” August 24th. We certainly had a swell time but were sorry that Mrs. Cal Karanya decided the last minute that she was able to take off from work, and then had to squeeze in with our D. M. and the boys. Was it a case of mental telepathy, or could our secret plans have been revealed? This stag business should be a consolation to our boys in the Service. To my friend, The Ferret, who seems to have it in for me because I escaped the '“little birdie” when the group picture was being laken, I offer my apologies. But the picture turned out Letter without me in it, even you must admit! Pictures that were snapped at our picnic didn’t turn out. Reason! I stepped into the picture and it faded away. Right now, I wish to thank “Mother” Horvath and my triends in Detroit and vicinity for their hospitality over the holiday week end. The next time any of you visit in- Cleveland, kindly hx>k us up. We are in the jacinity of the Verhovay Home and are listed in the city directory. In behalf of the family, 1 wish to express our thanks to Branch' 14, S. A. Jakab and family, “Dad” Pclinkas, and all our friends for their kind condolences. Fraternally, ANN V. BIRO.
