Page 8 VERHOVAY SPORTSMEN of BRANCH 164 ------------------------ CHICAGO, ILLINOIS ----------------------______________________Verhovayak Lapja August 28, 1941 Labor Day brings to a close the summer vacation. It’s back to school for the kiddies and it’s time to separate the wool from the moth balls. Put away your light clothes and get ready for fall and then wintet\ I’m not rushing the seasons. I know we’ll have plenty of hot weather yet, but we do have to start thinking about the snow and cold. The reason for that weather report is that all articles must have a beginning, and the weather is about the safest thing to talk about. MEETINGS It was quite a surprise to see sc many people ’at our regular August meeting. Everything went along in order including a headwashing given to the Senior secretary and Yours truly by our chairman for a little mistake in my reporting. In last issue I reported that a stage production would be held on November 14. The date of this production is November 16. I admit that this was my error but I do think that from July to November gives me ample time to correct this mistake. I am only an amateur reporter, and therefore I do hope that the chairman will overlook that mistake. Also, should I make any other mistakes in the future, hope our chairman will be considerate enough to scold me in private and not during a meeting in front of aii the other members. ARMY NOTES or GONE WITH THE DRAFT I have no new recruits from Branch 164 to announce, but those that are in the service are all working hard and seriously. On-t before, I mentioned the fai t that Julius Jones is now a lop sergeant. Just recently, Johnny Ko'.ovits received two stripes, making him a corporal. He’s home now, on furlough from Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Frank Kantor is slowly breaking in as an engineer end at present is somewhere in Texas, on maneuvers. Marvin Kunstadt has just been released after spending two weeks ir the hospital. He was not seriously ill but he was put on a very strict diet. This diet included for his breakfast % pound bacon, eggs, five slices of toast, a bowl of puffed rice with a banana, only % pint of milk and Coffee. Oh for the life in the Army! BABIES Just about every other month 1 get material for a brand new article heading. This month it’s babies and plenty of them. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Tury (she is the former Anne Csizmadia) are the proud parents of a baby girl, born July 30, end will be christened Joan Barbara Tury. The M. Christians are also parents of a darling little daughter. The mother, Irene, is the sister of A1 Tury. A little boy came to adorn the homestead for Mr. and Mrs. Anton Dorko. The mother was formerly Goldie Soo. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lemler now have a little girl, and a little girl also came to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kavajecz, Jr, Mrs. Kavajecz, the former Irma Lachata, was secretary of Branch 396, now consolidated with Branch 164. That’s a bundle of babies, and FLASH NO. 3 the best news is that all six ot the babies are now Verhovay members. I wish all the babies and their parents a lifetime of happiness, and all of Branch 164 send their heartiest congratulations. AFFAIRS and ENTERTAINMENTS The Verhovay Sportomén held their annual bd&ch party at Montrose Beach on August 9th. A nice crowd was prerent. The swimming was swell and all had plenty to eat, if they tock the trouble to roast it for themselves. There were hot dogs, buns, relish, com on the cob, marshmallows and pop. Believe me, we really had a feast, if you like black hot dogs, corn and marshmallows. We were at the height of the fun when we had to pack up and get off the beach. The city law states that no one is to be on the beach after eleven o’clock. There were still some liquid lefreshments left, so a group finished it at the Fodor home. The Magyar Youth Organiza tion had a wonderful picnic on August 17. Everyone enjoys himself at a nice orderly affair but it was strange to note that the North and West side Verhovay branches were the only Hun garian lodges represented there. We wonder were the other lodges were that day? On November 16—not November 14—on Sunday, November lo, Branches 164, 503 and 342, with combined talents will present to the Chicago stage one of the big gest and best musical comedies. The play, “A Tót Leány-,” in En glish, “The Slovak Girl,” will be under the direction of Branch 164’s own Mr. Feifar, Sr., assisted by Eugene Petrovits, with an 100% Verhovay cast. Don’t forget or make a mistake on tl\e date: Sunday, Novem her 16, 1941, at the Lincoln Auditorium. See you there as I’m in it! Another important date on our calendar is October 3, Friday On this date we are holding Charity Bunco Party. This affair is for the benefit of our own needy members, and any prize donations, large or small, will be greatly appreciated. I’ve offered my donations and I hope that wc will have the whole-hearted sup port of all with their donations and presence at this affair. The date is Friday, October 3, 1941, a Verhovay Charity Bunco Party at 333 W. North Avenue. Just another reminder of our New Year’s Eve party to be held on New Year’s Eve at the Wicker Park Hall. This year will be the biggest and best party and the best celebration in Chicago. Make up your minds right now to end the old year and start the new year in the best company. FLASH NO. 1 We still don’t know if William Feifar, Jr. bought a boy or a girl certificate. It won’t be long now. FLASH NO. 2 Where did Ernie Kunstadt get the $150 to pay for his recent accident? We’re glad that Ernie did not suffer any serious bruises I was highly insulted today. After going to the trouble of planning for a very successful beach party, seeing that everyone had a good time, someone had the nerve to refer to it as a ‘fish party.” FLASH NO. 4 Paul Kantor sent a card from California, where he is spending his vacation. He saw all the sights of the Grand Canyon, Tijuana, Hollywood and Frisco, and is having a wonderful time. FLASH NO. 5 Mr. and Mrs. Soo will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with their closest friends and relatives on August 31st. Branch 164 sends its heartiest congratulations. FLASH No. 6 I put the potatoes to roast at the beach party. I wonder who wanted them bad enough to take them out of the fire? r FLASH NO. 7 Charles Wiliam Dobra and Mary Luckem became man and wife during a wedding ceremony at St. Nicholas Church on Saturday, August 23. Many of our Verhovay Sportsmen were invited to the wedding, and all of Branch 164 wish the two of them lots of luck in their new adventure together. FLASH NO. 8 This is good news for the younger generation. It’s the end of vacation and back to school for all the kiddies. All of my readers will get a chance to see my face. On the front page of our little newspaper, one of these days, will be tny picture. My introduction was written by Albert Tury, president of the Verhovay Sportsmen of Branch 164. His opinion of me is not necessarily shared by all members, but I’m very glad to have a friend who speaks highly of me and I wish to thank him for the trouble of writing out my introduction to all my readers.
