JOSEPH DARAGO, Supreme President. The Qreater Love You may sail the seven seas, my dear, And love each one in turn, You may take to ships and leave me here Alone on shore to yearn, But do I rant? You know I can’t, For I know you’ll soon return. For Norwegian blood is in your veins, The sea’s wild call is strong, You may love each wave where Neptune reigns, And love the wind’s loud song. But I’m not mad, For I know, lad, You’ll come home where you belong. You’will soon come home, your sailings o’er, For though you love the sea, There’s a greater love for home and shore, A greater love for me, And so I wait, And pray kind Fate, Guard you where’er you may be. —BETTY CAROL BALEGA Defense Savings Bonds and Stamps Introducing... JOSEPH SZENTKIRÁLYI As the years go on the immigrant generations which constitute the Verhovay are becoming less and less, and 'their American, bora children and grandchildren , will some day fall heir to our organization, named after the great statesman, Julius Verhovay. But American bom and American bred though the new generations are, they must be taught and they must be reminded that their ancestral race and nation has had a great and noble past, with accomplishments and culture to be proud of. Knowing these facts, we young Verhovays are sure to become better Americans, for honoring one’s forebears does in no wise conflict with one’s loyalty to country, but rather increases it. Joseph Szentkirályi has been doing an excellent job of enlightening our young on the great men and historical figures of Hungary, for, being a highly educated man, both in this country and abroad, and librarian of the Hungarian Reference Library in New York City, Mr. Szentkirályi is in a position to give the readers the fullest measure of information on Hungarian history. Mr. Szentkirályi is a member of Branch 516, New York City. Due to the many additional duties which have been imposed on him, Mr. Szentkirályi has of late been unable to contribute regularly his HUNGARIAN PERSONJOURNALISTIC TIDBITS By Andrew C. Simcho Munhall, Pennsylvania Member of .Branch 278, Omaha, Nebraska When you sit down to write a story for' the newspaper have you any idea what type of story you will write? Newspapers classify their stories in the following manner: First, and by far the most common, is the news item, of which you have already heard plenty; second is the syndicated column,. written by such authors as Winchell, Brisbane, Hears, O. O. McIntyre, Fannie Hurst, E. V. Durling, Drew and Pearson, and a host of others. These men have readers numbering in the millions; third there, is the human interest stories. One of the best human interest stories is the reply of a New York paper editor to a girl named Betty, with regards to whether or not there is a Santa Claus. In this category are the s« called “sob sisters,” whose idea is to bring about a sympathetic reaction among the readers. Feature stories are those written by experts on a certain line. Their opinions and statements are AGES column. We sincerely wish that he will be able to return soon, because the HUNGARIAN PERSONAGES series of Mr. Szentkirályi has a definite mission to perform. based on knowledge and not casual information. In every newspaper you will find an editorial or several editorials commenting on local and national affairs, generally with the idea in mind of bringing to the public an intellectual résumé, conclusion and criticism of what is häppening in the world. Most insignificant, but still a vital part of any paper, is the filler copy, two or three lines of explanatory matter, on something of no importance but of general information, such as, so many millions of bushels of spuds were grown in Idaho in one year. The Secretary expressed his appreciation of the cooperation extended by the retail organizations, saying: “The Defense Savings Program is gaining momentum every day. The splendid spirit shown by the retailers of the nation in putting their associations behind the sale of Defense Savings Stamps is sure to have a stimulating effect in advancing the whole Program. It is another indication of the American determination to proceed wholeheartedly toward success in our National Defense effort. “The thanks of the Treasury and of the Government are due the leaders of retail industry and to their member stores all over the nation for the enthusiasm with which they are entering into the plans for ‘Retailers for Deiense’ Week, and for the continuous activity pledged in the sale of Defense Savings Stamps.” Stamps will be sold in the retail stores at convenient points, the representatives of the retail associations explained.
