THE FERRET SEZ... BRANCH 429 — DEARBORN, MICHIGAN August 14, 1941 p** S Believe it or not, boys and girls, The Ferret has something more important to report, for a change, than the private views of aforementioned “critter.” Yes sir, we are in the throes of even more interesting preparations than those made for our Fifth Annual Banquet last year! And that’s saying plenty! Branch 395 of McKeesport, Pennsylvania (Albert Jozik’s branch—take note, females of Branch 429) is coming to visit us on Sunday, August 24th, from about 8:30 A. M. to about 12:30 A. M. Their acceptance was made at a wiener roast they had the last week in July, and so Officers John Sabo, Julius Lenart and Alex Goydan, and Albert Jozik, caught the members oft guard and they accepted our invitation, hoping that we’d show them the time of their lives! Tentative plans to date are as follows: The historic meeting at Union Station at 3:30 A. M. (TAKE NOTE, YOU CAR DRIVERS—All those who have better cars than ours—that could mean almost any of you—should be at the Union Station to drive our guests to the Horvath residence on Holly Street, where breakfast ol bacon, eggs, toast and coffee will be served—to build the guests up for the hectic day to follow.) Then from there, we will visit any, or all, oi the following places: The Zoo, Belle Isle, Grosse Pointe, Grosse Isle, The Ambassador Bridge and Canada (just a short trip to make our Pennsylvania friends feel the thrill of going to a foreign country). Also, Albert Jozik mentions something about our important streets such as Fort, Gratiot, Woodward, Grand River, St. Aubin, Jos. Campau, Mc- Dougall and the city of Hamtramck. Almost forgot the Ford Factory whose shadow falls upon my ancestral home (Note to Editor —that’s good, isn’t it?). That should take up a good part of the morning, and about 2:00 p. m. we will triumphantly lead our guests to the Molnár Farm, where the Detroit Verhovay Day will be held. At the picnic grounds, we will see that our friends (who should be friends and not guests by this time) are well fed. They will also be given one of the best opportunities of the year tc meet as many as possible of our numerous Verhovay members and friends in and around Detroit. The supreme officers will also be present, which should make the visitors still happier they came on this particular day. After all are fed and happy, the much discussed softball game between members of Branch 395 and Branch 429 (both males and females) will be played off. Albert calls us “Detroit cocaine eaters,” so we had all better polish off our batting, -etc. to show them thai even if the Tigers are not so hot, Branch 429 is something to reckon with. The game should take up the best part of the afternoon (interspiced with plenty of liquid refreshments), after which the “piece de resistance” of the day will be served. After a hasty brush-off and freshening up, a treat will be in store for you guys and gals who haven’t a Detroit River to live with. A Moonlight Excursion (which to you Pennsylvanians is a boat ride) to Bob-lo should leave many pleasant memories to revive when you get back to the dull routine of working, etc. Dancing, refreshments, tete-a-tetes, etc. are promised on this boat trip, which will land us back in Detroit with just about a minute to spare to get you on your train for the return trip home. Well, how does it sound? If any members of Branch 429 have better suggestions, come to the regular monthly meeting to be held WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20th at 7:30 P. M., at 2441 HOLLY STREET, and let’s have them. At any rate, all final details will be settled at that time, so please be there, every one of you, as we want to make our guests feel right at home, and cooperation from all of you is the one way to do it. Further note to Branch 395—En route, see if you can capture John “Dirk” Fulop, with his vast sense of humor, just to see that we get a good start in the day with his jollification (is there such a word?). I hear that the Misses Mary Rakoczy (Branch 429.) and Mary Gallovich (Branch 356) were in McKeesport, Pa. and were disappointed because Mr. Jozik was on his vacation. I could have told the lasses the trip was worthless (or could it be that there are other eligible bachelors in the state of Pennsylvania?), if they had bothered to come to the meeting in May. I wonder whether congratulations are in order for Miss Rakoczy as yet? NEW MEMBERS COLUMN: Before going further, may it please the editor that 1 have been mentioning NEW MEMBERS ever since 1 started contributing to the Journal way back in 1936 (beat that record, you mugs who have been making- such a fuss about the way the Journal should be handled). Of course, seeing as how my old feudin’ partner Jos. J Horvath is receiving credit for the origin of the NEW MEMBERS COLUMN, I stand corrected, as he deserves as much credit as he can get. I remember when Jos. J. and I were the only personal contributors five years ago, and our little spats back and forth about the sex of THE FERRET started others on the idea of writing branch news and giving their arguments on my sex. At any rate, I like the idea of the NEW MEMBERS COLUMN, and if the editor should see fit, why not let Jos. J. be the editor of, or sponsor, or what have you, of this column? I think it is a very good idea, and new members would be pleased to see their names in print. How about you other secretaries? I believe the idea is a very good one. Well, here are the new members, all secured by our consistent “contest winner” and “member securer,” Mrs. Mary Horvath: Anthony Magyar, who lives on Vanderbilt Avenue, and whose entire family is slowly but surely becoming Verhovay conscious; Mrs. Anthony Magyar, his mother, is also a new member as of July. Then we have Mrs. Henry Keller, wife of the caretaker of the Verhovay Home. Welcome into Branch 429, new members! Our president, George E. Kuritcr, and family, have moved to 1263 North Rademacher Avenue, Detroit, if any of you members wish to get in touch with him. Well, I see where even THE FERRET will rate a picture in the “Introducing ...” column, along with such grand contributors as Betty Carol Balega, whose fashion articles are just about the best I have read; Amelia Nyers, our very able and earnest Children’s Page editor, and Albert Steinmetz of the “Sunkist Southern California” series. MESSAGES TO MY PALS (Editor: How about a Pen- Pals Page? You know, letters written to members, etc.): “Dunmore Better” of “DiVerhovayak Lapja lemma” fame (say, did you see his picture in the latest Popeye Comic Strip—Dilemma has horns!) is one grand newswriter. I feel as though I know all you fellas from Branch 395. Richard J. Phillips: Just in case you don’t read this column, a letter will follow for certainty. Our branch would like to have as many of Branch 356 present at the picnic on August 24th at Molnár Farm as you can round up, to meet Branch 395 of McKeesport, Pennsylvania. Nice article, Richard. Frank A. Szopko: The above applies to your Branch 36 also. Jos. J. Horvath: Surprising, isn’t it, Joe, what a swell guy Albert turns out to be? THE FERRET (and gang) are even turning themselves inside out. to entertain him and the rest of 395. How come you rate two columns a month? Becoming rather prolific after your long absence. Is that it? Who told you I had MOODS? I’m the most sensible person on earth—ha ha, ho ho. Sure glad you are back in the running. How’s about coming up August 24th to our picnic? Quite a group from Detroit and Dearborn are going to your picnic on August 17th, among them Mrs. Mary Horvath of Branch 429. Why don’t you have her tell you what a swell person I am? Albert Steinmetz: AI Jozik has told me quite a bit about you, and thanks for your kind regards which were relayed via post card by your guest. Mrs. Louis Sabo of Chicago: What a coincidence that not a drop of water fell at your June 22d picnic! Notice the picnic of Branch 366 of Cleveland had the same sort of good luckrain outside the grove and not a drop inside. Your picnic sounded like a grand time. Hope ours turns out half as well on August 24th. Last, but by no means least, Andrew Simcho of Branch 430 advises condensing news articles. Now “Brevity” was never meant to be my middle name, even though it is said “Brevity is the soul of wit.” I'm not trying to be funny. Besides, I’m different. No doubt the editor will do the condensing of my very long article. Until the second issue in August, when I will report on our visitors from Branch 395, I remain Fraternally, THE FERRET, Publicity Agent. ■--------------O------------_ BRANCH 477 NOTICE Niles, Ohio The next monthly meeting of Branch 477 will be held on Sunday, September 7, 1941, 1:30 P. M., at the home of John Pirigyi, secretary. Plans will be made for a dance to be held in November, and a boy and girls’ bowling team will be organized. All members are urged to attend this important meeting. Fraternally, MARY KOVAL President. --------o-o-------New Zealand manufacturers have been required to use 20 per cent of domestic leaf in their tobacco products, which percentage will be increased as domestic production increases.
