May 29, 1941 VerKovayak Lapja Fage 0 June 22CHICAGO DISTRICT CONTEST November 30 Contest Closes Verhovay Day 55th JUBILEE YEAR 55TH YEAR JUBILEE BRANCH 96 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS The Chicago District Verhovay 55th Year Jubilee Day is drawing ever closer with each passing hour. The committee for this day is working against time in feverish haste, exerting every effort to make your day and my day of celebration a huge success. To do this, they have thought of entertainment and enjoyment for every one of us in attendance, whether it be members of Verhovay or friends. To give you a keyhole picture of what is in store for all of us, we wish to have you continue reading. There will be games and races for the youngsters and grown-ups in the morning. This will be followed by lunch where fine Hungarian food and refreshing drinks will be served. After we have all filled ourselves, there will be a few speeches to which you can either listen or sleep to. Then the younger set can start their “rugcutting” to the swing music of a popular band, which will remain a mystery as to identity until June 22nd. Can you guess who it is? If you can, a grand surprise is in store for you. Send your answers to the Secretary of Branch 96. The older folks, grandfather and grandmother, father and mother, big sister and her beau, big brother and his best girl, can all waltz to the strains of Johann Straus’ music or “csárdás” to “Nem vagy legény, Berci.” This music will be furnished by Chicago’s own Szepessy Union “zenekar.” The newlyweds will also have a chance to furnish their home with beautiful pieces of kitchenware, lamps, linens, etc., that they can win. There is a strong possibility of a huge merry-go-round being obtained to which all children will be admitted, and if the grown-ups feel like riding again we won't stop them. It will be “Hi- Ho, Silver,” let everybody ride—and ride as often as you desire. To this will be added the performances of many guest stars, performing both in the English and Hungarian languages. The setting for this gala program is Franks Grove, bedecked with a full .carnival spirit, which effect is to be produced with gayly colored lanterns, serpentine streamers and decorations, along with continuous music furnished from our high powered recording and amplifying system. Our open door is your invitation to attend and enjoy the many things some of which we have only given you a keyhole view of. We, the entire Jubilee Committee and the membership of Branch 96 urge you to attend on Sunday, June 22, at Franks Grove, 115th & Homan Avenue, Chicago. Fraternally, WILLIAM A. TOROK. BRANCH 503 SPONSORS GRAND MAY DANCE Chicago, Illinois-:o:-Abraham Lincoln in an address on economy said “Teach economy. That is one of the first and highest virtues. It begins with saving money." Everytime you pay your life insurance premium you are contributing to your savings account. On Saturady, May 17, was held our Grand May Dance, at the Rainbow Hall 333 West North Avenue. Although the hall was not crowded to capacity, those that were present enjoyed themselves to the full. The crowd „remained there until 4 A. M., dancing to the tune of Suto and his orchestra. Mr. Sándor Rudnyanszky accompanied as pianist. Financially the ball was not such a big success, but when we take into consideration that our members and friends had a most enjoyable evening, it was a huge success. Thanks are due to those who so ably assisted to make the affair a bigevent. At the bar were Joseph Szenassy and Steve Lovenyak. Anton Kovács was, as usual, in charge of the cash register. In the kitchen could be seen, busily working, Mrs. Ethel Szaj, our vice-president, Mrs. Frank Balogih and Mrs. Joseph Szenasy. Steven László and Gabriella Kondracsek alternated in taking care of the wardrobe. Bob Sanoshy also took part here, on the condition that he get a glass of beer ... which he got cheerfully! At the flower dance Mrs. Ethel Szay, Mrs. László and Helen Csontos assisted. We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to all those who contributed of their time and effort in making this affaii such an enjoyable and big success. We want to make special mention of the group from Verhovay Branch 96, which attended the dance. Mr. Szalancy is the president of this branch. Some of those attending were Mr. (treasurer) and Mrs. Frank Tinich. Mr. and Mrs. Matanyi, and a number of others. LOUIS SABO 11934 Lowe Avenue - Chicago, Illinois j that we, too, shall be glad to participate with them at their affairs. Some of the side-glances obtained at the dance: Eugene Petrovits, Sr., took the violin away from the orchestra leader and showed him that he could play. Mr. Petrovits, by the way, is president of the Branch. Miss Margaret Marosvolgyi, heartbroken, telephoned that Saturday afternoon to say that she could not obtain leave of absence from her work, and therefore could not attend the dance. We are certainly sorry that Miss Marosvolgyi could not be with us. t Miss Ann Csontos also could not attend because she was busy preparing for a shower party for one of her friends, so we hear... Lillian Seigh, who played the leading part in “Hamburghi Menyasszony” operetta, was there. She will participate in the 55th Jubilee Celebration of the Chicago District Verhovay Association, which ívül be held on June 22nd. Anne Talaber, as usual, was ever-ready to assist in taking charge of admission tickets. Anne is our junior secretary, by the way. She had a good time anyway, she says. And she deserves commend, for the next day she attended the Committee Meeting of the 55th Jubilee Celebration, at Burnside. We hope that her friend was not too disappointed because Anne could not get away in time from this meeting. There were quite a few members who did not attend this dance, while several who did come left the hall rather early. We wish more members would attend—all, if possible—and enjoy the pleasant evening with the crowd. Let’s all cooperate!
