April 24, 1941 VERHOVAY SPORTSMEN of BRANCH 164 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS --------------------CHICAGO DISTRICT MEETING AT CHICAGO, ILLINOIS The 55th Jubilee Celebration and current Membership Drive will be the main topic of discussion at an important meeting of the Chicago District to be held Sunday, April 27, at 2:00 P. M., at Prokop’s Hall, 924 West 119th Street, Chicago, Illinois, the home of Branch 96. Officers and committee members of branches belonging to the Chicago District are urged to attend the meeting, as their suggestions will be necessary to complete plans for an outstanding VERHOVAY DAY. At the picnic, which is scheduled to be held June 22, at Frank’s Grove, 117th and Homan Avenue, an administration booth will be erected for the convenience of members and a loud speaker system will be installed on a truck. Szepessy’s popular orchestra, together with the newly organized Verhovian Orchestra composed of Branch 37 members, will provide the music for dancing. The dance hall, situated in the center of the grounds, will accomodate 500 couples at one time. Women of Indiana Harbor branch 229 will demonstrate their abilities in the culinary art of preparing “Laci pecsenye" out in the open. We are informed they are very adept at it and are supplied with the necessary equipment. The women of Chicago branches 37 and 96, living nearest the grounds, will assist in the kitchen. Members of East Chicago Branch 130 have offered to conduct the bingo game, with the aid of two members from each branch. The picnic grounds will conveniently accomodate 10,000 people, and there are sufficient tables for families to spread their picnic baskets. Ample space is provided for baseball games, races and contests of various kinds. A large parking space is available for those who wish to travel by automobile. Everything humanly possible is being done by the Jubilee officers and committee to make this VERHOVAY DAY an outstanding event in the history of the CHICAGO DISTRICT. Each branch will be called upoii to contribute to the entertainment a short program consisting of a skit, dancing, singing or some sport. We are happy to announce that the Verhovay Tigers of Milwaukee, winners of fifteen trophies, will compete with another Verhovay Soccer team. We hope to have more detailed information in regards to the entertainment in the next English issue of the Verhovayak Lapja. Branch secretaries are asked to report to the District secretaries at this meeting the names of all members who will in any way assist at the Celebration, so that the proper position and time schedule may be assigned to each individual. None of the members, with the exception of the Jubilee officers, will be expected to work during the entire day. The Membership Drive now in progress will no doubt be the most important sart of our Jubilee Celebration. A revision in the list of prizes to be awarded the winners, was made at the last Directors’ meeting. Instead of the originally intended 26 prizes amounting to $1,500, there will be a total of 73 prizes amounting to $2,000. The new arrangement enables a larger number of contestants to take advantage of the prizes. Those branches in the Chicago District which have not as yet contacted the District secretary in regards to the Jubilee Celebration and the current Membership Drive are urged to do so at once. We are especially eager to hear from the So. Bend branches. Remember your cooperation is essential, and you don’t want to be the missing rung in the ladder which will carry us to the attainment of our goal. Although the Membership Drive has been in progress since the first of this year, there is still time for you to enter and compete for one of the prizes. Mrs. Louis' Sabo, District Secretary of 11934 Lowe Avenue, Chicago, Illinois is waiting to hear from you. Plans for the publication of the Jubilee Album to be printed in commemoration of our 55th Jubilee will be among the high lights of the discussion at this meeting. Various names, articles of interest such as those pertaining to histories of the branches belonging to the Chicago District, and all advertisements, must be in the hands of the District secretary not later than April 30th. Following this deadline no material will be accepted for publication. Branch 130 Of East Chicago has complied with our call for early contributions anc was the first to turn in names and advertisements they solicited. Don’t forget our next meeting, Sunday, April 27th at 2:00 P. M., in Prokop’s Hall, 924 West 119th Street, Chicago, Illinois. We axe The first thing on the program this month has to do with Uncle Sam and his Army of Selective Service Draftees. It seems that Our Uncle wants all of the best men in America, and I’ve always said that the Verhovay Sportsmen are the best there are. All you have to do is put two and two together and you have four. If we have the best and the Army wants the best, the Army wants our boys. We, the Verhovay Sportsmen, are proud to see our volunteer and drafted soldiers in Uncle Sam’s uniform, but needless - to say, that leaves us with baseball uniforms unfilled. The point of the above just is that in the future my article n.ay be headed Verhovay Branch .’64 instead of its present title. We hope the Sportsmen will continue but I’m afraid the activities will be cut in half. The only thing I can say to the boys that are leaving for a year is, “Live each day to its fullest advantage and remember a good Sportsman is the best man.” SPORTS The bowling season is drawing to its close much too soon, and the only conciliation is the plans being made for next season. Since the Bowling League was very successful as a sport, there are hopes and plans for a much bigger and better league. Chicago’s 164 team met Detroit in a bowling match during the early * part of this month. Four cars packed to capacity left for Detroit. As I stated in my last issue, my intentions were to be in Detroit, but I was in doubt about getting there because of the car. A week before the trip, Bob Zubor and car kissed anothei car. Bob got to Detroit but the car is now on display at the Warshawsky Auto Wreckers. The bowlers from Chicago received a warm welcome from the Detroit branch, and after the jowling were furnished with quite a bit of Detroit’s most hospitable entertainment. I have received no report as to the outcome of the game, but C can safely venture to say that a Verhovay team won. Detroit has been invited to play a return game here in Chicago on April 26th. Our bowling captain received a letter from Flank Szopko of Detroit, asking for my presence at this match and especially for the presence of our much celebrated single girls. I’ll send a special request to the few single girls we have left, and I can assure you that I’ll be on hand to root the 164 team to victory. MEETINGS The Senior Order of Branch 164 had a very short meeting this month because of the aforementioned Detroit trip. Many of the members wanted to get an etrly start for Detroit, and so most business was left unfinished. The Sportsmen did not hold a looking forward to having all the neighboring branches represented at this ’meeting. Until then, I remain Fraternally, Mrs. Louis Sabo, District Secretary. meeting this month, which leaves me without any business reports. PAST AFFAIRS The most important big Verhovay 164 affair was the bridal shower of April 16th, given -in honor of Miss Olga Chudek, the Sportsmen’s former secretary who, on May 10th, will change her name to Mrs. Ernest Kunstadt, Jr. This shower was given by Mrs. Csonka and Mrs. A. Vash, the bride’s sister, both Verhovay 164 members, and they were assisted by 164 members Mrs. Rak, Mrs. L. Molnár, Mrs. J. Kovach, Mrs. F. Kovack and your correspondent. Mr. Louis Barna was on hand to help with the heavier work. Olga will be a very lucky bride. The gifts showered upon her were beautiful, useful and abundant. Among the many gifts were a 104 piece set of Roger’s Silverware, a service for 12 set ot China, stemwape goblets, a Mixinaster imported from Indiana Harbor, a set of waterless pots and pans, a portable radio, bridge table, quilt, chenille spreads, electric iron, toaster, waffle iron and sandwich toaster, enough linens and towels for a lifetime, not to mention the beautiful nighties. As a bride, Olga will start out with many of the things our mothers still do not have, and I’m sure Olga will know how to use them. Among the Sportsmen guests present were Vilma Janik, Dorothy Benson, Mrs. J. Dory, Mrs. A. Janovich, Mrs. J. Vash, Mrs. L. P'odor, Mrs. J. Fodor, Mrs. Mumsen, Mrs. A. Tury, Mrs. W. Feitar, Jr., and Mrs. A. Risko, Jr. I also recognized Mrs. P. Sabo, Mrs. Kolozsi, Mrs. Tott, Mrs. W. Feifar, Sr., Mrs. Lemler, Mis. M. Mervi, Mrs. Moravcsik, Mrs. Janik, Mrs. Jankovitsch, Mrs. F. Kantor, Mrs. J. Papp, Mrs. A. Risko, Sr., Mrs. A. Sabo, Mrs. G. Sabo, Mrs. Varga, Mrs. C. Silady, Mrs. Kőműves, Mrs. S. Suto and Mrs. J. Toth Jr., of the Senior Order of 164. Olga was overwhelmed. The feted bride-to-be and the guests had a delightful evening. FUTURE EVENTS I again remind you of June ?2d when the big 55th Anniversary Celebration will take place at Frank’s Grove, at 117 th and Homan Avenues here, in Chicago. The District held a meeting early this month in Milwaukee, and I understand from Mrs. Sabo, of' Branch 96, that preparations are in progress so that everyone attending this carefree festival will have a good time. I mentioned in our last issue that our annual picnic will be held this year on July 6th at the Silver Leaf Picnic Grove. We have Branch 342, our good neighbors, with us again this year, and we are assured that all the north and west side Verhovay members will enjoy this, our once a year outing. This year Suto’s Union Orchestra will furnish the music, and all the festivities for success are planned. And now, dear readers, permit me to remind you of New Year’s Eve. I admit it is a long way off, but I was elected a special publicity agent for this event and f do know that plans are being started already. I’ll let you in on a little news about New Year’s Eve. Yes, Branch 342 will share in all the work because we expect a full house at the Wicker Park Hall that night. The big hall will receive over 1500 people and there is room for 300 to 400 more in the dining room. Mr. Varga, our entertainment chairman, has not only the Szepessy Orchestra’s contract in his pocket but he has also hired Adam’s Gypsy Orchestra for the biggest Verhovay affair in Chicago. More about this after Labor Day. FLASH NO. 1 When Marvin Kunstadt became 21 years of age, his first move was to Uncle Sam’s Recruiting office where he enlisted in the United States Army. His twin brother, Frank Kantor, followed his footsteps and they beth will leave for active duty sometime in May. FLASH NO. 2 I’m ahead of Winchell on this news. Don’t say I told you but the stork will be leaving a bundle at the Albert Turys’ in not too long a time.
