Thumbnail Sketch of the Northwest By Andrew C. Simcho Branch 430, Homestead, Pa. February 27, 1941 Verhovayak Lapja Appeal, Beauty and Charm By BETTY CAROL BALEGA Among famous last words the quotation, “I’ll try paddling down the Snake River,” should be included, for, in the thousands of years that the Snake River has been ruthlessly rushing towards the ocean, no man has ever lived to tell of navigating it. I use the word “ruthlessly” because no other river has less respect for its boundaries, for man or for beast. With breath-taking suddenness, this river will narrow its width from fifty feet to five feet cf frothing madness, will change from a calm, inviting surface to raging, demented force of destructive power. When the “chinook,” the spring rains and the winter snow swell this river, bridges, houses, dams and livestock are swept before it in a flood that may last for weeks. But. when Idaho is in her peaceful mood, nature is a smiling, kindly mother. .Flowers and trees give forth an incense that surpasses any perfume. The optical effect of the various hues is a sight that no artist can paint, no camera record, no poet describe. In the early autumn, when the foliage is donning new robes, a carefree Nature decks herself in hues of the most pleasing designs. From a deep velvet green of pine trees, blending to browns, gradually deepening into the pulse-quickening, flaming scarlet and red, Idaho’s dress is completed by an eye-compelling hat of deep blue, decked out with dainty dabs of white. Do you wonder that artists, camera fans and poets never try to express themselves in Idaho? To the red-blooded American, the big game of Idaho is a personal challenge that he can no more resist that can bears resist honey. To stalk the elusive, graceful deer, only to stand in awe as the deer go bounding over into the woods, flashing their white tails, is an incomparable thrill. To walk miles, “upwind” of the elk or moose, nerves almost screaming at the continuous demand for caution and vigilance, and then suffer from the dread buck fever disease, add to the thrill. -And then, at the end of the day, to sit under the stars, smoking by the campfire, telling of how you stood, just “ten feet from the animal,” but you couldn’t shoot; to hear how death had brushed its wings across the cheeks of your comrade, as a wounded elk rushed madly towards him, only to drop at the last possible second by a shot from your partner, and so on into the night, is really a tale of the raw. Gradually the voices quiet down and only the whispering of the trees in the pines, the ghöstly “hoot” of an owl in search of field mice, the smell of the pine logs permeating the campfire, remain. Soon, however, startlingly clear in the crisp mountain air is the barking of the coyote, the howl of the wolf and the scream of a mountain lion as its prey, breaking the deathlike spell of fear, bounds away, only to be hunted again tomorrow. All too soon your huntingparty ccmes to an end, your luggage is packed, and as the horsec pick their way down the almost invisible trail, you vow that some day you will come back, if not to live there then merely to hunt again. As the thought of the outer worlds creeps upon you, you seem to shoot forward into time a thousand years, into the everyday existence of automobiles, street cars, trains and noises. As you sit in the club car, it all seems a beautiful dream, a dream that can be cherished by any fireplace, but lived only in IDAHO. (To Be Continued) ■--------------O-------------BRANCH 96 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS The initial meeting of the newly organized Verhovay Women’s Auxiliary of Branch 96 will be held Sunday, March 9th at 3:00 P. M., in Prokop’s Hall, 924 W. 119th Street. During the meeting plans will be discussed for the operation of a women’s group to carry out the social obligations of the organization. Officers for the coming year will be elected. The committee in charge, consisting of Miss Helen Feleki, Miss Irene Balia, Mrs. Frank Meyerchik, Mrs. Stephen Uhlean and Mrs. Louis Sabo, have completed arrangements for an interesting program, following which games will be played and refreshments served. Fraternally, MRS. LOUIS SABO, Secretary. --------:o:--------There are more than 91,000 licensed radio receiving sets in use in Egypt. A few weeks ago during a “Color Fiesta” luncheon at the Pierre Hotel in New York City, Color Affiliates presented a series cf completely color-coordinated fashions, featuring seven new shades of Latin-American inspiration. Members of the group launching these new fashions are Elizabeth Arden (cosmetics), Str'oock (woolens), Mallinson (silks), Kislav (gloves), Palter de Liso (shoes), Delman (shoes), Howard Hodge (hats) and Korét (bags). The new colors prophesied to dominate the spring fashion picture are. Brazilian Beige—the color of eafe-au-lait... a basic color for suits and capes... worn with vivid contrasts, Trinidad Tan—the bright brown cf cinnamon ... wonderful shade for soft woolens ... delightful for accessories. Argentine Navy—the dark, dark blue... as essential to spring as the first robin. Chile Sauce Red—bright and flaming... fashion choice for capes and coats.., even shoes and umbrellas. Peruvian Pink—a soft new shade of pink ... lovely for resort wear... perrenial contrast for Argentine Navy. Bogota Blue—charming shade for spectator sports and playclothes ... seen in blouses ... contrasting color with Trinidad Tan. Lima Lemon—newest and most exciting of all... a pale chartreuse, wonderful for evening .. , for gowns ... dramatic slack suits and important dinner pajamas. To meet the requirements of these Latin American shades, namely, the warm-toned radiance of a sun bronzed complexion, Elizabeth Arden has created her Liquid Bronze Glo and Liquid Bronze Glo Rouge. Liquid Bronze Glo is in actuality a powder foundation that lends a silky surface to the skin, and should be used with the special Liquid Rouge which gives a glowing warmth rather than the effect of added color to the cheeks. Quite a revolutionary step in the art of make-up: For the complete make-up routine Miss Arden suggests Malachite Eye-Shado for dramatic emphasis, and a single powder—Sim Fair Illusion, or if you prefer, a slightly darker shade, Rose Beige Cameo. To hamonize perfectly with all the new Color Affiliate shades, the following lipsticks and nail polishes should be used: Brazilian Beige—Cinnabar Trinidad Tan—Cinnabar Argentine Navy—School House Red Chile Sauce Red—School House Red Peruvian Pink—Rose Fumee Bogota Blue—Rose Fumee Lima Lemon—Evening Cyclamen. Remember, girls, it is always chic to key your lipstick color to the brightest and most dominant accessory color. Color Affiliates feature three-shade combinations, such as Brazilian Beige with Trinidad Tan and Chile Sauce Red. Another striking combination is Argentine Navy, Lima Lemon and Chile Sauce Red. For both of these you would wear School House Red on your lips and fingertips. With the lovely twin favorites of Bogota Blue with Trinidad Tan—and Argentine Navy with Peruvian Pink, there is nothing more lovely than Rose Fumee. Try mixing your own in this Easter Parade, Madam, but remember all is well only so long as your makeup harmonizes perfectly with your new outfit! (Editor’s Note: Due to the fact that press releases are pouring in from New York in preparation for the Easter Parade, we have decided to give the readers the benefit of each announcement as soon as possible, hence the appearance of this column in this issue.)--------------o-------------BRANCH 366 NOTICE Cleveland, Ohio The regular meetings of Branch 366 are held the first Friday of every month, beginning at 8 p. m., at the Verhovay Hall, 8637 Buckeye Road.
