Page 8 December 26, 1940 Verhovayak Lapja * SPORT PAGE Sports The 1940 football season has approached that threshold above whose portals are written the words “Abandon hope all ye who enter here.” But before it passes into this eternal darkness it shall rise up once more and burst forth in all its splendor and glory. I am referring, of course, to the various bowl games which have enough drawing power to bring back that portion of fandom which has already forsaken the gridiron for other athletic exhibitions. On New Year’s Day, at which time the various bowl games are played out, football in all its pomp and ceremony will become an irresistable force, much like the legendery “Lorelei” of the Rhine were an iri’esistable force to the mariners passing by. No lover of sports will be able to do naught else but attend, or listen in, to the games played that day. And even father will be able to tear himself away from the electric train he bought his son for Christmas long enough to listen in. There is no sentimentality in sports, however, because the passing of the 1940 season will be uneventful with nary a tear shed for its death. There will be no “Requiems” nor “Misereres” sung. Rigor Mortis will set in to the sound of crashing ten and duck pins and the swish of the basketball descending thru the hoop. Even in its dying moments football will be deprived of its most ardent supporter. Sports can be compared (as also women can) to the butterfly which flits from one flower to another, stopping only long enough to draw out the nectar. The Rose Bowl game this year will find two teams whose very ideas of football are different. On one hand there will be Nebraska, which hopes to win because of sheer power and its emphasis on the basic fundamentals of football. On the other hand there is Stanford, which will rely on its so called “Hipper Dipper” football and a tricky “T” formation. The Stanford coach, Clark Shaughnessy, has adopted this method of attack from the Chicago Bears. Tins By JOHN “DIRK” FULOP method is based on the element of surprise and hidden ball tactics. The quarterback handles the ball on all plays, the back field is in the “T” formation, and there is always one back in motion before the ball is snapped. The purpose of this is to pick up speed, draw over the secondary, and to get a start on the man to be blocked out on the play. From the fans’ viewpoint, this “Hipper Dipper,” with its spinners, fakes, reverses, cut backs and laterals, is the most enjoyable kind of football. To the player who must learn it, it is the most difficult; which proves that it takes more than a bunch of brawney morons to make up a successful team. We would like to leave this one last thought with you before we drop the subject of football altogether. We got it straight from our favorite survey expert, whom we call Dr. Trot, (that’s as close as he can get, to a ‘Gallup’) That’s one right off the cob. After you’ve canned some of that STUFF, we’ll tell you about this marvelous thought. Well, anyway, this survey expert has declared that two hundred million dollars ($200,000,000.00) is bet annually on football games. ‘That ain’t hay,’ as the vernacular would have it. So with this parting thought, ($200,000,000.00, honest), we drop the subject of football till next year and declare the 1940 season legally dead. Just as dead as some of our attempts at humor. This- paper will for some time be so full of bowling news that we promise to withold any information we may acquire on the subject. Where are all the columns dealing with branch news? Dearborn Highlights, Mystricky and all the rest? For several months now we have intended to extend our welcome to Miss Marguerite Varga, the newest contributor to our journal. This Hoosier poetess, whose illustrious works have graced these pages for some time now, has been shamefully unnoticed. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
