Page 10 Verhovayak Lapja. December 12, 1940 VERHOV AY MEMBER MAKING NAME FOR SELF IN SPORTS A young member ol Branch 484, Beaver Falls Pennsylvania, has been distinguishing himself in scholastic sports. He is John Kovach, sophomore, who is doing right well as fullback on the varsity footbal team of Baldwin-Wallace. Johnny again showed his ability and prowess at the recent hard fought match between Baldwin-Wallace and Akron, held at the Rubber Bowl in Akron, in which Baldwin-Wallace scored another victory. Concerning the newspaper accounts of the game, in which Johnny’s name figured heavily, one in part had this to say: “There was one thing about the game, however, that pleased Coach Ray Watts. It was the fine play of John Kovach, 190-pound sophomore fullback from New Brighton, Pa. Kovach scored the first B-W touchdown on a plunge from the one-yard stripe in the opening period, and it was his touchdown pass to End Nick Yowarski that put the Jackets ahead in the third. “Watts’ boys started off as though they might duplicate last season’s walkaway. Shortly after the opening kickoff, they marched 74 yards to the goal line, sparked by a Kovach to Marion Bulzomi pass—good for 19. yards, and long runs by Irwin Maxwell. After Maxwell had finally brought the ball three feet from the pay-off line, Kovach bucked it over... “But the Jackets got a break in the third period when Akron was set back to the three-yard on a clipping penalty. Akron punted out to Bulzomi who raced down the Zippers’ 34. Then Kovach went to work with his arm, firing four straight passes which ended in Yowarski’s touchdown...” That Verhovay member John Kovach is really appreciated for all he’s worth is evident from the headline of the newspaper account just quoted in part, which is: “Jackets Have Tough Time Defeating Akron; Kovach Is Standout.” No doubt Secretary John Namath was tihmkiff <i*f 'thers within Branch 48-1 laving talents similar tc John Kovach when he wrote n the October 10, 1940 En;lish Issue: “Look out, City League, here comes the Verhovay Bowling Team.”--------------------O-------------------BOWLING NEWS FROM YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO Saying, “Better late than never,” may apply to news about the Youngstown Verhovay Bowling Team.
