A HOUSE BLESSING God bless the comers of this house And be the lintel blest; And bless the hearth and bless the board And bless each place of rest; And bless the door that opens wide To Stranger as to Kin; And bless each crystal window pane That lets the starlight in; And bless the roof-tree overhead And every sturdy wall; The peace of man, the Peace of God, The peace of love on all.--------------O-------------ADO COST OF WAR Page 20 An English publication, “John O’London’s Weekly”, throws new light on the cost of war to the American taxpayer. It reports: “An Englishman with a sense of humour can have an amusing time in those United States just by keeping his eyes open and talking to strangers. Mr. George Digby, for instance, motored across America with his wife. Mr. Digby made a discovery concerning U. S. war pensions, payable to the widows of pensioners even when marriages are contracted two generations after the pensioner’s service has ended; they are still being paid to widows of men who served in the 1812 war! KA girl of seventeen who niarried one of these war veterans of ninety-five in 1890 would be only sixty-five today, with many more years of pensioned widowhood probably ahead of her. Any of these widows who become centenarians will still be drawing pensions in 1973. “On this basis,, Mr. Digby adds, it will be A. D. 2079 before the last pension checque payable in respect to the 1914—1918 war is endorsed by it last widow, who will not be born for another fifty-seven years.” -----------o-----------“Non-Production" For hard and realistic description of what something really means, it’s usually a good idea to go to the dictionary or encyclopedia. The definitions contained therein may not be very poetic, but they give a real picture of the hard facts. Here’s the definition of war contained in the encyclopedia : “The act of war consists in the destruction of men’s Verhovayak Lapja. January 25, 1940. . WINTER WHIMSY ’This February and we’ve had unceasing cold and snow Yet by degrees become inured to temperatures so low The icy wind, the shifting drifts no longer do we mind I for one in all these things a sincere pleasure find. Some shudder, to them it is but a cruel bleak wintery scene It is that too of course but how can they know what I mean When for my joy at all these things in lyrics I give reason If they feel not that pure delight in each new coming season. Who does not sense that bliss profound when welcoming the Spring? Who does not to each precious hour of glorious Summer cling? And oh for matchless Autumn with her colors all a-blaze So if only for the change we somehow like these wintery days. Even now the large white flakes in downward eddies sail All sounds are muffled and it makes a somnolence prevail She’s done her work, Dame Nature has, and everything’s disguised With rounded forms and graceful curves her art she’s realized. The footsteps of a passerby crunch most pleasantly The chains of a car with a dank dank dank beat a tattoo savagely A solitary bird flits near, so unobtrusively ‘Tis forthwith gone and from a bough the snow falls quietly NEWS FACTS by GEORGE NIWYOM, Willie Hoppe FORMER WORLDS BILLIARD CHAMPION OFTEN SHAKES HANDS WITH HIS FIST TO AVOID INJURY TO HIS ' CUg-HOlPlNO FlNőgRg/ WHO-O-O-O The Night Owl’s Howl EXCERPT FROM “The Wreck of the Birkenhead” Evening comes, the storm has stopped, the air is cold and clear In each home the windows brightly shine with warmth and cheer The many thousand pinpoint stars in brilliance scintillate The silhouettes of trees are etched against a bluewhite plate. i When comes the day the children play in gay and sportive glee The sunshine makes a dazzling white almost too bright to see To apathetic souls this wonderland should this fact bring: If Winter were not Winter per se how could Spring be Spring? A tractor, for example, is productive if it is used to plow and plant a farm. The food it produces goes to the general benefit. But if the tractor is covered with armor plate and turned into tank, it becomes a destructive rather than a constructive weapon. Thus the. present war like all others is proving a serious drain upon every nation. It would appear that most Americans now realize Hello folks, here are a couple of readers who are trying to be writers and as we are new in this field we hope you will excuse our errors. We introduce ourselves as the “Two Stooges”. We hail from Beaver Falls. Our personal description, both tall dark and ........... Our education, we went thru college (In one door and out the other). Our ambition as regular readers of the Verhovay journal to give a more vivid picture of what goes on in our vicinity. ELECTION RETURNS After a long and bitter discussion at our last meeting we elected our officers for 1940. These are the officers elected: Mr. Sam Nalesnik President, Mrs. Charles Nemeth Vice-Pres. Mr. John Nameth Sec.-Treas. Wishing the best of luck to our officers and would like to see more out to our meetings. SPORTS During the winter season our branch will feature two sports, basket ball and bowling. S. Nalesnik was elected sports manager of our branch. You will remember him as the spearhead of our softball team which collapsed after his knee went bad. Basketball—Our boys will be under the leadership of “Sig” Fubio who has turned out money winning teams in this district. The good ship had crashed at sunset against a sunken rock; the boats were too few; the sea was rushing iu; sharks were thrusting their horrible black fins through the white breaker of the boiling surf; and amid the shrieks of women and children some one clamored that all should save themselves who could. Then, cautiously and loud, rang out the voice of the good colonel, bidding the men to their ranks. That order meant nothing less than death—death in those raging waters-death among those savage sharks—but it was instantly obeyed. In perfect order the boats were pushed from the shattered vessel, rowing the women and children to shore, while, inch by inch, the vessel sank down and down, but still under steadfast men, till the last great wave rolled over her, and “obedient even unto death,” brave men — loyal to their chief, loyal to England, loyal to God-— sank to their noble burial under the bloody surf. —Frederick W. Farr an. The first observation naturally made by economists on this subject is that war expenditures generally are not what is called “productive.” To put it another way, money that goes into an explosive shell does not produce anything. Instead, it destroys not only life but other things which also cost money. that without, perhaps, having put it into those words. Certainly industry realizes it. American manufacturers would a lot rather sell plows than swords, for plows produce goods which a farmer can sell for money with which to buy more plows.--------------O-------------Bermuda consists of a group of 360 islands.
