WHO'S TO BE THE SCAPEGOAT?

To what extent the alarmists, the propagandists are shaking the people of our country is tellingly evidenced in an editorial, “One Flag—One Language,” appearing in the Sunday, May 26 issue of The Pittsburgh Press,

The'scare-throwers and suspicion-feeders are creating bugbears and fantasies that put to shame the Martian tales of H. G. Wells, are giving the gullible people a case of jangled nerves far more detrimental than that induced into the system of a ten-cups-a-day coffee drinker, and are making the nation more jittery than the combined efforts of the swing-jazz kings, Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway, Gene Krupa, in their most frenzied moments of blatant musical discordant hodgepodge.

As is so often the case, the editorial in discussion subtly and with outward show of good will, makes the “foreigners” and the “foreign societies” the target of its journalistic hash, rehash and plain nonsense. (“Foreigners” is a grand ambiguous word and as often as not implies native born children—even their children, too— whose parents spring from central and southern Europe —the inferior parts so called; “foreign societies” are those organizations which employ another or other languages in addition to English, in spite of how long they be in America and the fact that they have no connections abroad.)

In “One Flag—One Language” the “foreign-language groups” are nicely advised to be “exceedingly cautious lest they bring down suspicion and injury on their own heads.” Suspicion on what grounds, we ask? Why such a general statement? Perhaps the Pittsburgh Press editorial is hiding its possible deep-seated prejudice by the employment of generalities, and suspicions, and what have you.

The height of audacity is manifested in that part of the editorial advising the “foreigners” that “there can be no allegiance to two flags or two languages in this country,” and they “should use only one language in their publications and broadcasts—the American language.”

The Pittsburgh Press and all the other editorial bogeymen may here be reminded that the displaying of two flags and the use of two languages do not necessarily conflict with our firm allegiance to The United States. The one flag and the one language—the American flag and the American English (not American as the Press editorial calls it) language—receive our pledge of allegiance first and last; the other flag and the other language—be what they may—are the recipients of some sentimental regard ONLY, such as ancestry, which is no conflict. There is no more contradiction in this case than in the truth that we obey our parents and respect our grandparents.

As to the use of “one language in their publications and broadcasts..the Pittsburgh Press editorial contradicts the very purpose for which it was written—to emphasize Americanism. In one breath the editorial preaches Americanism, which is really tolerance, and in another

urges unconstitutional restrictions, in effect un-American and intolerant.

The best defense the “foreigners” and the “foreign groups” (who it seems can never become “real” Americans till they anglicize their names and deny their historical origins) have for their Americanism is the past and present achievements and record which bejewel their fair name. Proportionately they have produced as good American citizens than the 100% Americans (whoever they are).

Concerning the warning given to us not to “mingle flags and languages at these critical times...” because suspicions may be aroused, we are not too worried, for, isn’t it true that talk is cheap, isn’t it true that it’s the facts that count.

“One Flag—One Language” is at best an unintentional editorial blunder, at worst a sensationalized trouble maker.

We advise that in the future the authors of such finger-pointing editorials cool themselves off by calmly surveying the situation before plunging into an orgy of emotional phantasmagoria.

MÁR HETEK ÓTA Írnak a lapok és beszél a rádió a nemzetvédelemről (National Defense). Roosevelt elnök a kongresszushoz küldött üzenetében öt billió dollárnak a megszavazását kérte honvédelmi célokra. Figyelmeztette a kongresszust arra, hogy nincs kizárva annak a lehetősége, hogy az egész világot és igy az Egyesült Államokat is belerántják a világháborúba. Egyben felhatalmazást kért Roosevelt arra is, hogy aktiv szolgálatba behívhassa a nemzet ifjúságát országunk területének és semlegességének megvédésére.

Sokan el sem hiszik, milyen komoly és mindnyájunkra nézve mennyire életbevágó dolgok rejlenek az ilyen hírek mögött! Köztársaságunk elnöke jóformán csak nehány nappal ezelőtt eszmélt arra, hogy országunk határai védelem nélkül állanak és az Egyesült Államok nyitva áll, mint egy ház, amelynek kiakasztották kapuját, ablakait, Pedig minden gondolkodó fő tisztában van vele, hogy a fegyverkezés ma élet és halál kérdése. Abból a vad káoszból, amelybe a szerencsétlen Európa sülyedt és amely talán az egész megbomlott idegzetű óvilági kulturemberiség végzete lesz, mint intő parancs szólalt meg Roosevelt ajakán a parancs: “Fegyverkezni!”

Hasztalan vagyunk mi a béke országa, hasztalan undorodunk a háborútól, alkalmazkodnunk kell a világhelyzethez. Ma történelmi múlt, gazdaság, tekintély és békeszeretet egyetlen egy országnak sem nyújtanak már biztonságot.

Minden ország hihetetlen erőfeszítéseket végez katonai erejének minél tökéletesebb felfokozása érdekében s igy ezen igyekezet alól nem térhet ki ez az ország sem! És az európai helyzet nem engedheti meg a további késlekedést. Fegyverkezni kell! Amerika légi haderejét a legmagasabb fokra kell fejleszteni! Ez a ma jelszava és ez lesz a holnapé is!

A NAPOKBAN egy pompás könyv került a kezembe. “Hősök” a

cime és szerzője Thomas Carlyle, angol író és történész, aki összes müveiben a hőskultuszt hirdette, erősen színes, romantikus modorban . . .

Thomas Carlyle a “Hősök”-ben Odinről, a hősről leírja azt a babonás félelmet, amely a kezdetleges, durvalelkü ősembert elfogta a Természet előtte ismeretlen erőinek: mennydörgésnek, villámlásnak, tűznek, zivatarnak láttára . . .

A huszadik század embere valami hasonló babonás félelemmel nézi a mai kor rejtelmes erőinek felsorakozását ... A magasra fejlesztett géptechnika csúcsán és a fejlődés szikláján azonban ott látjuk a mélységbe vezető véres utat, melyet bevilágít a világháború pokla!

Madáchi kép! ... A huszadik század embere azonban hasztalan fél, a végzet elől meg nem futamodhatik ... A mélységbe sem vetheti magát, mert azzal feláldozná sorsát, kultúráját, egyéniségét és mindazt, amiért eddig küzdött. A cél tehát az, hogy küzdenie kell s ebből a küzdelemből immost Amerikának is ki kell vennie a maga részét! . . .
