The consumers explained the need for the growing consumers movement. They pointed out that depression has made it necessary to stretch the family budget— to get more for each dollar spent. They said that consumers wanted to know more about packaged goods, grading, quality standards, informative labeling and advertising, etc. And they advocated more cooperation with retailers. Here is a sound program, deserving of widespread support. And the factor of consumer-retailer cooperation is of exceptional importance. No longer are the interests of buyer and seller regarded as basically opposed. Progressive, organized retailers, both chain and independent, have done excellent work in improving the standards of merchandise, promotion and advertising, as well as in reducing costs. And the consumers, for their part, have shown an intelligent spirit of understanding of the retailer’s problems. The representatives of the big consumer organizations have been given all possible aid by manufacturer and retailer. Out of this work, it is reasonable to assume, will come a higher standard of living for millions of people. When two associated groups, such as consumer and retailer, sit down together in a spirit of sincere cooperation, discuss their ideals and problems, and start to work on a suitable program for solving them, success must ultimately follow.--------o-------GETTING TOGETHER “I believe constructive leaders are realizing more and more the necessity of group discussion for mutual understanding and cooperation,” said T. Kline Hamilton, former president of the Ohio Dairy Products Association, recently. “I believe more people are beginning to realize that crusades and radical class legislation cannot produce magic short cuts to prosperity.” In the field of agriculture, group action has been the rule rather than the exception for some years, due to the highly successful efforts of the marketing cooperatives. And such cooperatives have been fully awake to the fact that the interests of labor, consumers and other groups, no less than the interests of agriculture, must be considered in making policies. That marks a significant development in agricultural history.-AN URGENT MESSAGE-to women who suffer FEMALE WEAKNESS Few women today are free from some sign of functional troub'e.
