May 30, 1940 4th -was a very special occasion. Everyone enjoyed the delicious end filling meal. With full stomachs, speeches were in order and bowling prizes were awarded to teams and individuals. A sociable crowd gathered in the Blue Room at the 333 Halls to attend the Bunco given by the eenior group of 164. There were loads of beautiful prizes to be awarded the winners and enough for everyone. There was a bar and a kitchen with sandwiches, coffee and cake. A good time was had by all. Don't forget about the big picnic to be held Sunday, June 9th, at the Silver Leaf Picnic Grove, 6839 Milwaukee Ave. It probably is the first of the season and I won’t be wrong if 1 call it the best. Tickets can be bought from almost any member of our branch including Yours truly, or they can be obtained at the gate. There will be plenty to eat and drink, with lots of good music. MEETINGS. No Sportsmen’s meeting was held in the month of May to make way for the Bunco that was held on our meeting day. The Sportsmen had a big at tendance at said Bunco. FLASH NO. 1 The inimitable Louie, was a bachler for one night and he sure made use of the time. (Was the cake good, Lou?) FLASH NO. 2 Say Dannie, is it the girl or the $50? FLASH NO. 3 Olga Chudek and Ernie Kunstadt are now Godmother' and Godfather, respectively, to the former’s niece. FLASH NO. 4 Marge Fodor is suffering from an inflamed throat due to bad tonsils. She is the next in line for a tonsilectomy operation. FLASH NO. 5 Baseball practice is held on Sunday mornings and you fellows better get out on the field to get into shape for a big season. FLASH NO. 6 I want to mention the name of Irene Kovács whom I just recently met. Irene has only been in Chicago for a few months. She hails from Pittsburgh. Irene was born in Homestead and has spent most of the past months trying to get in touch with some Hungarian organization here in Chicago. I intend to bring Irene out to our picnic and I hope it won’t be long before I have her application for membership. My last column seemed to bring up a little excitement. I have received many letters and cards, complimentary and otherwise. For all of them from my Verhovay pals, I’d like to extend my thanks. June is upon us with weddings, graduations, etc. I hope the heat won’t be too severe. Until our next issue, I say Good-bye. Just me, MARGARET STANGRET, Publicity Agent for Verhovay Sportsmen of Branch 164. Verhovayak Lapja JACOBS CREEK REPORTS ITS FIRST GAME WITH PITTSBURGH AS NEW VERHOVAY LEAGUE IS LAUNCHED Creek Nine Wins Opener with Ninth Inning Homer Jacobs Creek, Pennsylvania, Sund®- May 12th: The recently organized Verhovay Baseball League got under way when Jacobs Creek played Pittsburgh at the Jacobs Creek grounds, on Sunday May 12th. The Creekmen’s loose fielding in the initial inning gave the Pittsburgh Nine a three run lead which they kept until the sixth. Pittsburgh collected one in the fourth and two in the fifth but in the meantime the boys from the Creek had driven in three runs, which made the score 6-3. In the last half of the sixth the Creek Nine started a rally which garnered three runs to tie up the game. In the seventh each team scored once and the game was deadlocked until the last of the ninth, when Johnny Komar, pitcher for the Creek’s team, won the ball game. Johnny batting in the third notch, with nobody on, staged a one-man blitzkrieg by whacking out a long four bagger to win his own game. The boys from Jacobs Creek also collected five errors to their opponents none and despite this fact won the game. Perhaps this can be attributed to the fact that Pittsburgh did not get one extra base hit whereas Jacobs Creek collected four, a homer, two triples, and a double. What everyone likes about this new league is that no matter what teams play the Verhovay team always wins. Following is the score by Innings and the Box Score: 12 3 45 6 7 8 9 R.H.E.
