Page 12 April 25, 1940 Verhovayak Lapja______ ♦♦♦ THE HUMOROUSVEIN ♦♦♦ Makes A Difference Is it true, that it’s bad luck to have a black cat following you? Depends on whether you’re a man or a mouse. * * * No Alibi “Sorry, sir, but I’m all out of wild ducks. I could let you have a fine end of ham.” “Don’t kid me. How could I go home and say I shot an end of a ham?” * * * Baffled Girl friend: “What does ‘davenport* suggest to you?” Boy friend: “A city in Iowa?” * * * Why Not? A man stepped into a cigar store and asked the price of a brand of cigars. “Two for fifteen,” replied the clerk. “I’ll take one,” said the smoker. “That will be ten cents.” The buyer paid the dime, took his cigar and left. A Scotchman who had overheard the conversation hurried up to the counter and said, “Here’s a nickel, I’ll take the other one.” * * * Shifting the Load The newly-weds had just gotten off their train. “John, dear,” said the bride, “let’s try to make the people think we’ve been married a long time.” “All right, honey,” was the answer, “you carry the suitcase.” * * * True Enough “Young man,” said the boss, “you told me yesterday you had an engagement with your dentist.” “Yes, sir, I did.” “Well, I saw you at the ball game.” “Yes, sir. The man sitting beside me was my dentist.” * * * Silent? Gazonda—Did you ever see a company of women who were perfectly silent? Gazoof—Yes, once when some one had asked which of those present was the oldest. * * * Helpful Clue Old Lady in Telephone Booth: “Operator, I want you to give me the number I asked you for last Wednesday, I can’t think what it is just now, but you’ll remember that it had a nine in it.” CALENDAR OF VERHOV AY SOCIALS APRIL 26TH, FRIDAY, 8:00 P. One member made the suggestion that a baseball league should be organized, at least for Eastern Ohio and Pennsylvania, and next year carry out plans for three leagues. THE RAIN Hear the mellow tinkletapping of the rain, The cheery laughter-lapping of the rain! How it twinkles on the leaves, How it wrinkles on the eaves, And drools in lazy curves upon the pane! Oh, the slanting, wavy, shining lines of gray, The veering, misty, twining lines of gray! They are messages of love From the great, dark sky above, That bless the town and country far away. I love the gentle falling of the rain, The soft and silvery calling of the rain, And I love the beaming smile Of the sun’s glad afterwhile That rifts the cloud and brightens at the pane. —James W.
