April 11, 1940 Page 11 VERHOV AY ORGANIZES NEWEST BRANCH Branch 513 recently came into being after organization of the second and third generations into a new branch fomied from the parent Hungarian branch. The members of this new branch felt that they could do more for themselves and for the Association if they separated from the older group. Mr. Joseph Cibolya, District Manager in that section of the country, aided the young people in the organization of Branch 513, located in Wharton, New Jersey. The temporary officers of newly formed Branch 513 are: Louis Taylor, President; Frank Kish, Vice-President; William Taylor, Manager, to whom all correspondence should be directed, and whose address is Box 78, Wharton, New Jersey; Stephen Kish, Controller; Mrs. Helen G. Taylor and John W. Post, Auditors. Announcement of the time of the regular meetings of Branch 513 will appear soon in the Verhovay Journal. The entire Verhovay Family congratulates new Branch 513 and wishes it rapid growth and prosperity. The English Section of the Journal hopes this new American branch will send a liberal share of contributions to the bi-monthly English Edition.--------------O-------------“GET ’EM YOUNG” Are there any fire traps in your town? It’s easy to make a quick answer of No —but harder to prove. For a building doesn’t have to be in ramshackle shape to be a target for a destructive fire. Many a superficially modem and imposing building contains hazards that axe a terrible menace to its occupants. Most dangerous of all are poorly constructed and inadequately maintained public buildings. The fire record includes a long list of burned schools, dance halls and stares which in each case entailed a ghastly loss of life. And sometimes fire takes a grimly ironic tone. Not so long ago a large number of children attended a Canadian theatre showing a film entitled, “Get ’Em Young!” Fire broke out and 75 of the children died. It literally “Got ’em Young!” First step in making any town safe is a modem building code. Second, enforce it to the letter. Unscrupulous politics is one of fire’s best friends. Many a building has been posted for violations of fire ordinances—only to have an owner with political pull “fix” them. When politics plays with fire, it plays with human life. Every school, theatre, dance hall, government building and other public structure should be periodically inspected by experts from roof to foundation. Every hazard found, big or little, should be immediately corrected—and the law should see that no time is wasted. Some 10,000 Americans are cremated alive every year—and adequate fire prevention work could save the great majority.--------------O-------------SURPRISE PARTY HELD FOR BRANCH PRESIDENT A surprise party was held in honor of the birthday of James Nagy, president of Branch 336, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, at 510 S. The police had sought for it; the gem had been advertised for and great excitement had followed its loss, but the finder was unaware of all that. Now, two of the pearls were missing. She had worn that brooch to clasp her waist, as daily she went to do washing for more fortunate families. It had glistened against the steam of the tub. It had come loose many times and dropped to the floor. It is so hard to be poor, but it is harder to be poor on special occasions, and now her daughter was to graduate from high school. That little brooch, repaired, would make a pretty present for her—as pretty as she could afford to give. The clerk went away. She thought it strange so simple a task should require consultation. “Yes,” he said, when he came back, “we can match vv-m, but it will cost yor two thousand dollars. These are genuine pearls!” The little old lady almost fainted. For ten years she had been wearing thirty thousand dollars at her breast without knowing it. Countless women daily had seen their washerwoman come to work with that brooch in her blouse without guessing its worth. Life plays tricks on us all like that. Most of us are richer than we know; most of us are blind to our blessings until they are pointed out to us. If we think a thing is cheap, it is.
