PATRICK N. H. O’YORK Limerick, Maine.--------------O-------------THE MEANEST MAN IN THE WORLD When a newspaper hears of a ruffian who steals pennies from a blind man’s tin cup, it publicizes the incident and his name goes far and wide as candidate for the title, “The Meanest Man in the World.” Then another newspaper will challenge the claim to the title by I offering its candidate—a man who stole a child’s pet dog and sold it to a laboratory. Candidates for the title come and go, but we have our own ideas about the meanest man in the world. Our meanest man in the world is the man who condemns his wife and children to a life of uncertainty, want, actual poverty, simply because he doesn’t want to talk about life insurance. Refusal to buy insurance, he reasons, will enable him to keep for himself the few dollars that would have gone to pay the premiums, this to be spent in selfish extravagance. But there is a way to redeem this man, to convert him, if you will, by telling him what life insurance will do to satisfy his own selfishness. Show him income for himself in old age, and you will have, in this indirect way, provided protection to his family.—National Gleaner Forum.--------------O-------------SERVICEABLE Any business which has as its primary impulse the preservation of the home, the education of children and the care of the aged, must have the admiration of us all. When we consider that the same funds which provide for the helpless are also mighty factors in the building and expansion of business and public utility enterprises, we gain some conception of the place of life insurance in our national life. Life insurance is a form of investment which should commend itself to every man of common sense and business judgment. It is equally serviceable as an incentive to the saving habit and as a protection against unforseen and unforeseeable circumstances.—The Safe Guarded News. Verhovayak Lapja BRITISH IMPERIALISM by RICHARD J. PHILLIPS PART III. THE BETRAYAL OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA It is said that we have to stop Hitler because we cannot believe his word. Was the English word in connection with Czechoslovakia worth a great deal? Is the English word in connection with Finland worth a great deal? Is it worth anything? Let me quote the words of the Czech Minister of Propaganda of the terms forced on that little country by the "democracies" of Europe. “For if our Government, with the President of the Republic at their head, had to decide to accept such cruel conditions, it was because they wished to spare the whole population useless bloodshed. “It is not lack of courage that has prompted our leaders to make this decision—which has stabbed us all straight to the heart. Often more courage is needed to live than to commit suicide. In the whole world there cannot be any decent men who could say that we have behaved as cowards when we authorized our Foreign Minister to tell France and Great Britain that we have decided to make this sacrifice for the sake of world peace.” Here is what Dr. Krofta, the Czechoslovakian Foreign Ministe) said about the sell-out of Czechoslovakia—not by Germany but by England and France. Here are his exact words: “This case is unique in history. Our friends and allies have imposed on us such terms as are usually dictated to a defeated enemy.” How was Czechoslovakia destroyed? It was not destroyed by Germany alone. It was taken into the conference room and there on the operating table France, Italy, Germany and England assisinated Czechoslovakia. Can we believe the words of Chamberlain? The Czechoslovakians thought they could believe the words of Chamberlain, but he “sold them down the river” when British imperialism was at stake. Shall we believe the word of England? Remember the word England gave in Palestine to the Jews. England lied to both sides. She lied to the Arabs and lied to the Jews. When it suited the purpose of British imperialism did they live up to their treaties? Did they live up to their Balfour declaration? No; when it became necessary they “sold the Jews down the river” just as they would sell anyone “down the river” when it suited them. This is a sample of Great Britain’s game of opportunism and duplicity. Here are the words of an American Jew, Dr. Solomon Goldman, about the word of England when it effme to their imperialism. “The issuance of the Chamberlain White Paper represents a unilateral action of nullification of pledges made to the Jewish people on behalf of the entire civilized world.” I ask you in the name of common fairness and decency, whose word has been violated? Not Hitler’s word, but the word of Great Britain, the country which we are supposed to assist in making the world safe for “democracy.” ENGLAND’S STAND IN THE ORIENT What has been England’s stand in the Orient? England signed a nine-power treaty to protect China, but when Japan marched into Manchuria where was England? She was where she was when Poland was invaded. She was sitting back in England, sitting back in silence, and hoping that things would come out all right. Where is she now, while Finland is engaged in her death struggle. The same place—sitting back—waiting for the outcome. We have seen countless examples of the betrayal of America, of the betrayal of Czechoslovakia, and the betrayal of other nations by the British empire. These betrayals by the British Empire have not only taken place in the last 25 years, but for centuries upon centuries upon centuries. Vincent Shean, noted war correspondent, writes in his book as follows: “I knew that France and England would never fight for anything worth fighting for; that their resistance, when it came, would come for their moneybags or their empires, never for a principle of any consequence to the human race; that no pledged word, no law, and no reason could henceforth count in the processes by which governments determined the fate of mankind. This is an imperialistic war, fought for no principle ' except that of empire. The naked greed and selfishness of these two nations are so hideously exposed that an American must hesitate before expressing a preference between them.” Yes, we do not have to go far beyond our borders to know of betrayal by Great Britain and her failure to keep her word. Do you know that France and England, or both of them, have been in war for 121 years and at peace for only 23 years between 1776 and 1918? Do you realize that if the United States of America had been fighting shoulder to shoulder with Great Britain and France since the start of the Government in 1776 we should have been in war 121 years out of the 144 up to the end of the last war? It seems that every time 1 pick up a paper I see that some country or other will join the Allies. Quite sometime ago I read that Turkey was to join the Allies. We all heard at that time that Turkey wras a democracy. When Russia was with England, we heard that Russia was a democracy. Now that she is with Germany, she is not a democracy. It seems that we shall have to change the dictionary definition of the word democracy. According to us a democracy means any government lined up with British foreign policy. AMERICA’S FOREIGN POLICY I have just read in the papers that Mr. William Griffin, owner and publisher of the New York Evening Enquirer, has instituted a million dollar slander suit against Winston Churchill, First Lord of the British Admiralty. Mr. Churchill has been given 20 days tc answer this suit by the New York Appelate Court. I am familiar with the facts that brought about this suit by Mr. Griffin and I shall pass them on to you. It seems that in 1938 Mr. Griffin made a trip to Europe and while on this trip, Mr. Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty in the British Cabinet during the World War, invited Mr. Griffin to call on him at his home in London. During the course of a long conversation, Mr. Churchill asked what were some of the questions uppermost in the minds of the American people regarding Anglo-American relations. The questions were asked by Mr. Winston Churchill of Mr. Griffin, his American guest. Mr. Griffin told Mr. Churchill that the outstanding issue in the United States was England's failure, to pay her war debt. Mr. Churchill then said to Mr. Griffin. I am not exactly familiar with the words but it went something like this: “I think that England should pay every single dollar that she has borrowed from your country. But before paying in full she should be allowed to deduct half the cost of all the shot and shell she fired at the Germans from the time America j declared war until she put soldiers in the front-line trenches ! over a year later.” Whereupon Mr. Griffin asked Mr. Churchill that if we allowed England to make the deduction in question, how much would it amount to? Mr. Churchill answered something like this: “I was in a position to know just how much it cost England to carry on the war, and, according to my figures, England should be allowed to deduct $4,900,000,000 from the debt America claims England owes her before a final settlement is made. When you declared war you became partners in war. | and therefore your country should be willing to bear its jus* cost of carrying on the war.” Mr. Griffin then told Mr. Churchill that it was our opinion that America had saved the British Empire from destruction and from overwhelming defeat. Mr. Churchill disagreed with him regarding America’s contribution toward winning the war and stated unequivocally that although he was enthusiastic over our declaration of war, he could now see that it was ALL A HORRIBLB MISTAKE and that we SHOULD HAVE STAYED AT HOME AND ATTENDED TO OUR OWN BUSINESS. Then Mr. Churchill went on to say, “We would not have lost the war, because we would have made peace with Germany in the spring of 1917, and by so doing would have saved over a million British and French lives.” Further, he continued and said, “America’s entrance into the war -was DISASTROUS not only for your country but for the ALLIES as well, because had you STAYED AT HOME and minded YOUR OWN BUSINESS we would have made peace with the Central Powers in the spring of 1917, and then there would have been no collapse in Russia, followed by Communism; no break-down in Italy, followed by Fascism; and Nazi-ism would not at present be enthroned in Germany. If America had stayed out of the war and minded her own business, none of these 'isms’ would today be sweeping the Continent of Europe and breaking down parliamentary government.” Mr. Churchill has now repudiated that story entirely and hence the million dollar slander suit instituted by Mr. Griffin. So, it was just a Horrible Mistake for us to enter the last war-. Yet, they are doing everything they can to make us enter this one. It is just an example of how we were “roped in” and how we may be “sold down the river” in a short time to come if we follow in England’s footsteps and help her make the world safe for "democracy.” In conclusion, I wish to say that England as a world power has lead a petering-out existence for the last 50 years; ever sine« the Boer War. So has France, ever since the fall of the Second Empire. England has lived for years on her foreign trade. When that dwindled, she lived on her savings, and now she is living mainly on the production of armaments. France is no better off. The balance of power is ready to pass into the hands of a., younger, more aggressive nation with more vigorous people. It is! possible that colonial off-shoots of France and England, which art on their own feet, may decide that it would be greatly to their j advantage to be on terms with the rising tide rather than the ebbing tide—and the rising tide, in this case, seems to be Germany. England today is really an antiquated and decrepit imperialist) hegemony, whose sole purpose in “ridding the world of Hitler” is to try to save her skin. To accomplish this, she will do anything—even go as far as getting millions of our young men “over there” and protect her and assure the successful conclusion of another Versailles, which perhaps, some day, will be nullified by the destruction of ttto perpetrator. Next month l shall take you behind the scenes of Trianon antI vnmask those behind the partition of “1000 year old Hungary.”
