Verhovayak Lapja, 1940. január-június (23. évfolyam, 1-26. szám)

1940-01-11 / 2. szám

1940 Január 11. 9-ik Oldal Verhovayak Lapja Who’s Who ín Dearborn? It looks as If the members gave me my old job back again—telling you the news from Dearborn. * * * News of the election is always interesting, so here are the lucky members who will carry on the work for 1940: Joseph Greenwald, unanimously elected President; George Kuritar, vice-president: Jolán Lucas, re-elected secretarytreasurer; Mary Rakoczy, recording secretary; Steve Horvath, Comptroller; Mrs. Samuel Toth and Mrs. Margaret Greenwald, auditors; Publicity Agent, yours truly, The Ferret; and the same sick visitors as last year, Elvira and Joseph László, Mrs. Mary Horvath and Mr. Michael Kuritar. The entertainment and athletic committees will be appointed by the new president in January. Mr. Joseph Szabó, newly elected secretary of Branch 433 very kindly acted as temporary president to conduct the elections and Elvira László was appointed as temporary secretary. We had a guest, also from Branch 433, Mrs. Ethel Korponay. * * * The big event will be held Sunday, January 21, 1940, to celebrate our fifth anniversary as a branch. The banquet and dance will be held at the Verhovay Fraternal Home, 8005 W. Jefferson Aveneu corner of West End. The banquet will begin promptly at 1:00 p. m. to the accompaniment of Deek and Berki’s Orchestra. Mr. Kalman Nemeth will act as toastmaster. The finest Hungarian- American cooking is promised and the usual fine liquid refreshments for which 429 is noted. Entertainment will be furnished in various forms. Besides the speeches by delegates from other branches and outside organizations, we will have Mrs. Nyiri, a prominent member of the new branch 500, who will honor us with her fine singing. It may be that the active members of 429 will spring an old-fashioned melodramd, but that idea is still in its infancy. If conditions permit, Mrs. Samuel Toth may honor us with an old-time folk song, accompanied on the piano by her daughter. The entertainment committee is still working on several suggestions and more will be learned as time marches on. VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE: At the December meeting, it was voted that the purchase of at least one ticket will be compulsory to all members. Look for your letters and tickets in the very near future. If for any reason (and the reason must be good) a member cannot purchase a ticket, kindly return to Jolán Lucas, 2441 Holly Avenue, Dearborn, Michigan. Those members who are taking more than one ticket will also please return the money or tickets by Wednesday, January 17 so that the entertainment committee will have a fair idea of how much food to purchase. This will be appreciated. To date, the job of waiting on tables has not been definitely decided. It may be that the younger members will serve, and again it has been suggested to get several serving tables and load the trays on them. In this manner, the tables will be waited on sooner and appetites satisfied with less grumbling etc. The cooks will be given a free admission—so step lively, ladies, either pay your way or else peel potatoes and stuff. A very elegant suggestion was made by our lovely female members. How about evening gowns to be worn by the femmes of 429 to the dance in the evening? After all, an anniversary comes but once a year, and this will not be just an ordinary dance. Mrs. Mary Horvath had a brilliant idea at the December meeting. Why not have EACH member bring at least ONE new member as a gift to the anniversary party? The names of those bringing these gifts will be published in our next issue. Let’s see if we can’t take up a whole page. * * * The officers and members of Branch 429 take this opportunity to invite each and every member of the Verhovay organization to help us celebrate the fifth birthday of our branch. We would all like to see many branches and other organizations represented, and without seeming too pertinent, we would particularly like to see Branch 366 of Cleveland (our competitors for the Verhovay Hall of Fame) liberally represented. We hope many of you honor our banquet and dance with your presence. Thank you. I guess that about covers our big event of the year. Any further suggestions will be welcomed with open arms. * * * A belated vacationist is Elvira László who, by the time this issue reaches you, will be sojourning in sunny California. She will let you know her impressions of this wonderful state in next month's Journal. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and a Happy Birthday to "Al” in sunny "Cal.” * * * A few friends gathered together to help Mrs. Anna Horvath celebrate her newest "21 plus” birthday on December 21. Mrs. Horvath recently became a citizen of the good old U. S. A. * * * Joseph Greenwald, our newly elected president, has a brand new home in Dearborn. I think Joe should invite the members to his house for a meeting soon! * * * Joseph László did NOT get a deer this year. No siree, not even a teeny weeny bunny or pheasant. Tough Luck! Louis Lucas had better luck with ducks, teals, pheasants and bunnies. * * * Al Berclieny was suggested as Publicity Agent but he refused on the grounds that he couldn’t make and write the news at once. He just came back from Tennessee. Wonder what he does on all those trips he takes! * * * The treasury balance sure looks good this year. The Kocsonya Dinner in January, a picnic in July and a Moonlite Boat Trip in September certainly took the kinks out of the treasury fund. * * * Mrs. Mary Horvath who was elected as District Delegate at the last December meeting came back with good news from the meeting which was held in Dayton, Ohio. All of the changes an additions which were asked had been ac cepted, including having the English issue of the Journal printed bi-monthly. * * * Mary Szabó was in a play given in November at the Ver hovay Fraternal Home. She la our most versatile member, including among her accomplish ments acting, singing, dressmak ing and designing and probably several other arts of which 1 know not. Some gal! * * * Mr. Michael Kuritar went to Dayton at the time of the District Meeting and visited his brother there who I believe is also a Verhovay member (or should be). He also went to Richmond, Indiana, his old home-town where he was formerly secretary of Br. 34. Mr. Kuritar was accompanied by his wife, Veronica. * * * VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE: Will all members please try to have their dues paid to the secretary by the 25th of each month so that the report can be mailed out not later than the 28th. Your co-operation is very necessary in this. Beginning with January, all those members whose dues are not paid by the second Sunday ol the month will be called on and dues must be paid by the 25th. Thank you kindly. * * * Mary Rakoczy is rather lonesome without Cecelia Herman who now lives in Detroit, miles away from "the gang”. We sure miss the Herman girl and hope she moves back here soon. Notice Mary Rakoczy is very ladylike and polite to her elders since her sojourn in Europe—quite a contrast to The Ferret who blows in and casts sarcastic remarks to all who listen. ADMISSION Both Banquet & Dance 75c Dance Only ...... .......... 25c MR. EDITOR: With your permission, I will begin a revival of some old-folk tales and true experiences as told to me by our older Hungarian members. In fact, I have on hand a true experience which happened to Joseph Greenwald just recently, but owing to the length of this column, of our important banquet, I am forced to postpone it until the February issue. (I hope Jo* doesn’t mind too much.) Also, why not begin a booklength tale of old Hungary is installments, in the January issue? I’m sure all the Verhovay Tickets can be obtained at 2441 Holly St., Dearborn VInewood 1-8779 members would like them as much as I do. 1 mean this in all seriousness. I’d rather read a good story than a bum column—or statistics. * * * So much for now. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas, and may the New Year bring you much happiness, prosperity and contentment.
