We wish to thank the Supreme Office for their very kind telegram of good wishes and success for the branch, and also to thank V Mr. Martin Himler for the very nice telegram he sent to us from New York City, wishing us sue cess and hoping to be present at our Tenth Anniversary. While thanks are being handed around, the members wish to thank Branch 36 for their gift of $5.00 and Branch 356 (not to be outdone by Branch 36) also presented the branch with a gift of $5.00. We also thank the Verhovay Club for their gift of $10.00, which was very well received. While we are still on the banquet, the ladies who cooked the very good dinner must also receive their share of thanks. Heading the list is Mrs. Anna Horvath, Mrs. Samuel Toth, Mrs. Michael ICuritar and Mrs. Mary Horvath from Branch 429; also from the various branches in the Detroit area there were Mrs. Ethel Korponay, Mrs. Marczis, Mi;s. Rakoezy, Mrs. Anton Magyar, Mrs. Soos and Mrs. Henry Keller of the Verhovay Club. May I take this opportunity to thank Mr. Henry Keller of the Verhovay Club for all the help he gave mo in ordering the correct amount of everything needed and for all he and Mrs. Keller did in cooperating with the members of Branch 429. Also we wish to thank Mr. Bert Farkas for the help he gave us serving behind the bar. The members also did their share of work and I know they want to be thanked publicly so here are thanks to: Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Greenwald for the very fine job they did of setting the tables all by themselves; Elvira László acted as Hostess and saw that all the guests were seated to 'their satisfaction; Cecelia Herman and Mary Rakoczy helped very nicely in the Check Room; George Kuritar, A1 Bercheny, Steve and Yolan Horvath, Josephine Kuritar and Mary Horvath did an excellent job of waiting on the guests; Mr. Michael Kuritar assisted Yours Truly at the door, selling and taking tickets;, and my very own Louis Lucas took full and sole charge of the bar in the afternoon; all in all, the one-third membership present certainly did their share of work. Mrs. Leslie Nyiri, wife of the president of branch 500, rendered some lovely Hungarian and American songs to delight the guests. Mrs. Samuel Toth, from Branch 429 was induced to come out of the kitchen and sing Hungarian folk songs which were welcomed by everyone. The large birthday cake which graced the Guests’ Table was raffled off in the evening and won by a young man whose folks live in Flint. The lucky man was Joseph Gall of 410 Cotterell Ave. I was surprised to see so many young people at the dance in the evening. All branches were well represented qnd everyone seemed to be having a good time. All in all, it was quite a success. Thanks everyone, and come again. * * * A surprise birthday party was given to Mrs. Mary Horvath at the Verhovay Home January 6. The party took on the aspects óf a Banquet, since so many people attended. Those responsible for making it a success are Mr. Joseph Szabó, Secretary of Branch 443; Mrs. Ethel Korponay also of Branch 443; Mrs. Florence Petruska, President of the Woodmen Circle 75; Mrs. Anna Horvath of Branch 429 and Mr. Daniel Rob, recently a new member of 429. I won’t mention names of the guests as there were so many, but I will say that the greatest majority of them were Verhovay members. Mr. Martin Himler, publisher of the Journal, was also present. This was one of those rare occasions since Mr. Himler is noted for the parties he does NOT attend. * * * The first Toth grandchild was born on December 31 to Mary Fernandez, daughter of Mrs. Samuel Toth. The young man, Ernest Fernandez, Jr., tipped the scales at slightly over five pounds. Mrs. Toth is very excited about her new (and first) grandchild We hope you have many happy years helping daughter Mary raise the young chap to manhood. * * * I will leave Joseph Greenwald’s yarn until the first March issue as I may have too long a column at present. * * * Editor: Thanks a lot for the story published in the January issue. It was very interesting and entertaining. How about some more like it? I especially would like stories about the Transylvania regions, as the tales from there have unusual appeal. Why not a book-length novel in installments, so that we will have something to look forward to each month besides the personal columns? * * * Joseph J. Horvath: I’m glad that my old faithful feudin’ partner noticed that I had come back into the fold of Verhovay scribes. Why didn’t some of your members come to our Banquet? Or was the weather too bad for driving here?
