February 29, 1940. Page 9 Verhovayak Lapja BRANCH 395 PROGRAM VERY SUCCESSFUL The members of Branch 395, McKeesport, Pa., on February 20th honored their native land, America, in a touching program called GIVE THANKS TO AMERICAN PEACE DAY. This program expressed their profound appreciation for living in a land that knows peace ’and tolerance. In the absence of the author and chairman of the program, Mr. John Szabó, Secretary of '395, due to illness, Mr. Elmer Halas, President of Branch 395, very ably took over the task. The program began with the singing of the National Anthem and was followed by community singing. Alter the singing a speech was made by Árpád Csontos, philosopher-poet of Homestead Branch 430. More singing followed; then Miss Martha Kanyusik, 395’s ace monologuist and impersonator, entertained the group with her masterful antics. Miss Kanyusik was followed by Miss Irene Pasternak whose sweet and sentimental singing of Hungarian songs mentally transferred her listeners to beautiful Hungary. This was followed by a quiz contest. Winners were presented with beautiful Verhovay gifts. The losers too were not without gain. They received packs of chewing gum. After the quiz group singing was presented by the trio composed of Miss Helen Katona, Mr. George Katona, brother of Miss Katona, and Mr. Elmer, Halas. Following the entertainment, Mr. Otto Molnár, Verhovay’s Chief Organizer, made a very fitting speech in which he pointed out the advantages and value received in belonging to the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. In conjunction with the program Mr. Alexander Goydan of 395 was presented by Mr. Molnár with a bronze medal and a certificate of merit upon his attaining the honorary degree of “Appreciated” for his services to the Verhovay. Mr. Goydan is the only second generation member who has received such an honor. In the entire organization only 30 have achieved this distinction. Refreshments were served after the presentation to Mr. Goydan. Among others present were Mr. John Fulop, District Organizer, and John “Dirk” Fulop, humorous writer of the Verhovay Journal. The program was every bit the success that Mr. Szabó wished for it. Importation of corn meal into Jamaica has been prohibited by the government. BRANCH 366 MEETING The next regular monthly meeing of Branch 366, Cleveland, will be held on Friday, March 1st. All members whose payments are in arrears are urged to pay in full, so that there be no inconvenience to member, Branch and Home Office. Because of great expense to the Branch the monthly meeting cards will hereafter be dispensed with. Fraternally yours, Elsie Kolozsvary. Financial Sec’y Branch '366.
