We immediately opened our eyes and looked out. It was an hour or so after midnight. We were at some small station situated in the mountains. álén in uniforms carrying lanterns could be seen hurrying here and there. This was the frontier between Germany and Czechoslovakia. These men, no doubt, were the Border guards. Soon our beliefs were confirmed when the door to our compartment was noisly pulled open and a Border Guard “poked” his head in, requesting to see all passports. He scrutinized them one by one, stamping one of the pages. After he left, we again dozed off when a sudden knock on our door followed by its being opened again, brought us to our feet. It was another Border Guard. The first guard must have been a German, while this one must be a Czech. He glanced suspiciously at our Red, White and Green caps and then requested our passports. We immediately obliged and everything was “okay.” A half hour later, the border formalities having been completed, we again continued. Prague or Praha, the chief town of Czecho-Slovakia was to be our next stop. Before the war, when this territory belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy Prague was the capital of Bohemia. It is an important manufacturing center having done much to create havoc in the manufacturingcenters of Slovakia. Today, Slovakia, the southern part of Czecho-Slovakia is “dead” in the field of manuWHO WILL be the next to be accidentally killed? We arrived in Prague about 8:00 A.ál. and discharged a lew passengers. About fifteen minutes later as.wa left Prague, the Royal Castle, on the Hradschin some 240 feet elevation, was pointed out to me. This is the ancient residence of the Dukes of Bohemia, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Castle has approximately 440 rooms. Three hours later, we came to the Czecho-Slovakian-Austrian border. Here again we were submitted to the border routine of showing passports and appearing innocent. First came the Czech and then the Austrian Border Guards. After having finished with this, we continued on our way. We were now traveling in Austria and were not far from the city of Emperors and Waltzes, Vienna. At 1 :00 o’clock that afternoon, we arrived in Vienna and were there met by representatives of three different organizations. Mr. Joseph Nagy of the áVorld Federation of áfagyars Overseas, álr. Andor Fay Fischer, newspaperman and álr. Paul Albrecht, manager oKthe Budapest office of the North German Lloyd. They welcomed us warmly and. informed us of advance preparations for oitr reception in Budapest. Since we had almost two hours to spend in Vienna, I took this time to walk out of the station into Vienna. I immediately spotted St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its massive tower pointing skyward. I saw other beautiful buildings too. However, I was not greatly impressed by my first glimpse of Vienna. ály time being very limited, I hurried back to the station. Very soon we were to leave for the Hungarian frontier. (To be continued) YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO Branch 364 ATTENTION, members of Branch 364. Branch 396 “The Verhovay Athletics’’ of Branch 396 of Jacobs Creek, Pa., held a Thanksgiving dance on November 25th, last. The main attracition and feature of the dance was the “Silver Moon Orchestra” and what an orchestra. It was a great success. There was a huge gathering at the dance, the crowd representing many towns and cities in the vicinity. We were sure glad to have all of you present. Judging from the expressions on the faces of the ones present, we are safe in saying that everyone enjoyed themselves to the fullest extent. The “Verhovay Athletics” was even requested to book the “Silver Moon Orchestra” for another dance. In compliance with this request, this was done and the dance will be held in January of 1938. The date will be announced later. But for some better news yet and here it is. The busy fellows of Branch 396 have another dance all set and this one will be a great opportunity for a good time, too, as they have booked another very good orchestra, Chuck Sever and his twelve piece band. This is an extra fine orchestra and so folks let’s have all of you that were at the other dance, come to this one too and bring some new faces with you. You know, “the more the merrier.” Those of you not present at the former dance, don’t take any chances but come to Jacobs Creek, Pa., and it is a sure bet that you will enjoy yourself immensely. So, hoping to see you all at the dance. Thank you! Steve Szabó
