i PAGE 2 VfrhovayJournal THE THIRD LAP Have you ever watched a Race that was run by either horses or men? I have at times watched a Dog Race. In many cases the racer has to run around the racecourse eight (8) times before the first mile is travelled. Let us now forget about the different kinds of races and consider Verhovay’s wonderful Membership Campaign and we will compare each month to one lap around the race-course. The duration of the Senior Contestant Campaign is from October 1st to March 31st or, in all Six Months, while the Younger Contestants’ Campaign continues until May 31st or Eight Months which we will consider to be Eight (8) Laps. Those who have been already been working since October 1st, will now have a good start of Two (2) full laps on the contestants who are just entering the race. 1 have seen pictures of races where the leader was back of the other runners and I could not understand how the second or third runner could be the leader of the race until it was explained that the one who seemed to be the second or third in the race, was really one or two full laps ahead of the others. If you are dropping a whole lap behind the other fellows, you should remember what the Preacher’s Parrot heard from the Sailor’s Parrot. Here is the story as I heardit. A Sailor presented his Minister with a parrot to be company for one the Parson already had. The Preacher’s Parrot squatted on his perch and in a most reverential position said to the Sailor’s Parrot, “What Must We Do To Be Saved?” The Sailor’s Parrot quickly replied, — “PUMP LIKE HELL”. — Now is the time for all the contestants to get busy immediately and follow the advice of the Sailor’s Parrot. Even at the beginning of the Third Lap (or Month) there i: still time for any member to enter this contest and make the other fellows hustle up or take a back seat behind you in a short time. Don’t forget to begin immediately to PUMP LIKE HELL. We are nearing the end of the second month of our Contest and at the present writing, the following are taking part in it. LATEST JOKES “Show me some of your latest jokes!’’ HUMOR EDITOR: “Oh, shucks, you will only laugh at them!” Bill and Frank were making their first trip across the ocean, last July. Bill soon found his scalegs, but Frank was less fortunate, and he was forced to return to his cabin. After a while, Bill burst in upon him. “Come on, Frank!” he shouted joyously. “There’s something outside that I want to show you!” “What . . . what is it?” he asked. “Frank!” said Bill, “it's a most wonderful sailing-ship!” His friend Frank turned over on his side and uttered another grcan. “I don’t want to see a ship,” he returned. . “Call me when you see — A TREE!”----0----LET JOY BE CONFINED IN THE HONEYMOON PERIOD! .... There had been a big family row; the police had been called; Mr. Nagy was hauled into police court for beating his wife. The magistrate rebuked him severly. “You ought to be ashamed of yourself,” his Honor began, “assaulting your wife like that. • I never saw a nastier black eye! Do you know of any reason why I should not send you to prison?” “If you do,” answered the defendant, “it will break up our honeymoon!”----o----. . . AND DON’T FORGET! . . . NO LINE OF BUSINESS REQUIRES MORE TACT THAN THAT OF SALESMANSHIP The old commercial traveler we relating his experiences to a young man. “And don’t forget,” he said, “never try to sell an ENCYCLOPEDIA to a bride!” “Why not?” asked the young man. The older man smiled cynically. "She always thinks her husband knows everything!” DOCTOR: “My dear lady, I am afraid you are mistaken! I admit I am a doctor, but t DOCTOR OF MUSIC.” OLD LADY: “I know that, in fact that is why I came to see you. I am having an awful singing in my ears!”
