DO YOU KNOW that while Europe’s first written constitution was the English Magna Charta, only seven years later, in 1222, came the Hungarian ‘'Golden Bull,” signed by King Endre? This “Golden Bull” was at the same time Europe’s first democratic constitution, because, in the despotic medieval world, it guaranteed freedom and equality and conceded that the nation could deprive the king of his throne if he ruled contrary to the common interest of the people.-----o-----DO YOU KNOW that Hungary took up the struggle against the invading Turks, whose object was to subdue Europe, and annihilate its civilization? And that for Hunyadi’s decisive victory at Nadorfehérvar (now Belgrade), in 1456, Pope Calixtus III. ordered that in remembrance of this triumph the bells should be rung at noon in every Catholic church forever?------o-----DO YOU KNOW that among others, Britain’s Secretary of. Foreign Affairs, Lord Palmerston, and even the Czar of Russia wrote a letter requesting that the heroes of a nation should not he treated as criminals, and that such a worthy race should not be annihilated? --------o--------DO YOU KNOW that inspired by this commiseration of the whole world Turkey risked the attack of Austria, rather than to extradite Kossuth and his confederates?---------o--------DO YOU KNOW that Zachary Taylor, then President of the United States, and John M. Clayton Secretary of Foreign Affairs, sent Dudley Mann to Hungary as special representative, with a view of aiding in the struggle for freedom? Unfortunately, however, by the time Mr. Mann arrived ■— everything was too late.-----o-----DO YOU KNOW that in November 1849, Daniel Webster, American Senator and later Foreign Affairs Secretary, praised the attitude of the Magyar people? General Cass declared: “The most glorious and splendid nation of Europe is Hungary . . As a result of the motion of Senator Forte, the American Government protested against detaining Kossuth and his friends. DO YOU KNOW that when Austria rejected the intervention of the United States on behalf of Hungary, Daniel Webster, by then Secretary of Foregin Affairs pointed out in his reply that THE HUNGARIAN “REBELS” DID THE SAME THING THAT GEORGE WASHINGTON DID FOR THE UNITED STATES...-----o-----DO YOU KNOW that General Haynau, ruthless autocrat of Habsburg oppression after 1849, was refused by better circles and hotels, when he retired to London? And when an angry mob of brewery workers attacked him, even the conservative “Times” wrote: “It is better for General Haynau not to ask for compensation for no jury in the British Isles would give it.”--------o--------DO YOU KNOW that first England and then the United States received Louis Kossuth with the utmost sympathy, these two countries having jointly sent a boat to liberate the Hungarian patriot and his followers from their exile in Turkey? Later Italy extended the same hospitality assuring Kossuth a haven in Tornio, where he died. The statue, erected there by bis parliamentary constituency, the Magyar city of Cegléd, is a constant reminder of the great liberator.--------o--------DO YOU "KNOW that for years Kossuth and his emigrated circle were feted by parliaments apd people alike in Anglo-Saxon countries as perhaps no other foreigner before them? After his triumphal tour of England, Kossuth visited the land of liberty, touring America with unprecedented success. His New York reception was tumultuous; tens of thousands lined Battery Place, Broadway, Astor Square, Fourth Avenue and the Bowery, when Kossuth and his friends were escorted to the City Hall (which stood on the site of the Present General Post Office), where full military honors were accorded them, under the command of Generals Morris and Sanford.--------o--------DO YOU KNOW that for services, Pope Pius II. The reason why today England has 44, France 40, and Hungary only 9 million inhabitants, is, that for 400 years Hungary had bled for Europe, culture and civilization ?” 4személyesen vezetett karácsonyi Társasutazás az Ó-Hazába Indulások New Yorkból: BERENGARIA November 25 QUEEN MARY Dec 1, 15 — AQUITANIA Dec. 8 Közvetlen gyorsvonatok Párisból 1938.
