MAY 29, IS37 PAGE 7 Verhovayak-Jopja AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO YOU, YOU and YOU How many of you boys and girls of Hungarian origin know that an important American industrial city, East Chicago (Ind.) has a mayor of Hungarian descent? Hon. Andrew Rooney (Rónay), Mayor of East Chicago, Ind., who is a member of Yerhovay, sent the following message to the youth of the second generation : “We citizens of Hungarian extraction will hold a place of ever increasing importance in the life of America, because we have been endowed by our race with strong bodies and good minds and the finest cultural background of alienation represented in our country.” “I believe that we second generation Americans of Hungarian stock should be ever watchful that we do not lose the valuable heritage that is ours if we are to make the contribution we should make to the United Stktes of America/’ Americans of Hungarian descent can best prove their allegiance to these United States by maintaining, further developing and putting into the service of this country the fundamental characteristics of their cultural heritage from their Magyar ancestry. They are descendants of a race, whose sons have had to succeed againt pressure, misfortune, handicap and persecution. There is adequate proof that, transplanted to this soil, the second generation Hungarian is a loyal American citizen, trustworthy and dependable. The second generation is in an ideal position to draw strength from what is best in its European background and thus contribute its best efforts to America’s culture. But only those will be able to make such a contribution, who really know the Old Country, its people, their customs, their character. That is why the Yerhovay’s Pilgrimage of this summer is so vitally important. Here is an excellent opportunity for all second generation American Hungarians to get thoroughly acquainted with the country of their ancestors. * The great membership drive of the Yerhovay F. I. Association, together with the contest, is to be closed on May 31. There will be 25 winners. Each and every one of them will receive steamship and railway tickets absolutely FREE, as a prize, as a sign of appreciation for honest efforts and outstanding results in building up and strengthening the largest society of Hungarian Americans. The winners will participate in the Pilgrimage as guests. But the fact that only 25 of the contestants will get free tickets does not mean that the work of all the others is not appreciated. All those who participated in the contest should feel that not only the Yerhovay Association but all Hungarian Americans are thankful to them. We sincerely wish it were possible to give free tickets to all the contestants ... This Pilgrimage will be a memorable event in the life of all those who participate in it. Whether or not you become one of the winners, make a resolution that on July 24th you too will be among those who will stand on the deck of the “Europa,” all excited and touched, ready to sail for that other part of the world in the middle of which there is the land of our dreams, Hungary. Persuade your parents to come with you! You would make a major mistake to miss this incomparable opportunity. You know that one of the aims of the Pilgrimage is to pay homage Jto the memory ofHungary’s and America’s hero, General Bandholtz, savior of the Hungarian National Museum. But more than that, we aim to strengthen the bonds between the country of our parents and America. The program of the Pilgrimage is- simply wonderful. One event after the other, festivities in Budapest, tours all over the country „ . . there will be unlimited possibilities for you to really get acquainted with beautiful Hungary. All our Hungarian brothers over there are already waiting for us with open arms and a brotherly welcome. The sport fans especially can readily appreciate the career of this Yerhovay member. Brother Yerhovays will have an excellent opportunity to pay their respects to our fellow member who achieved this wonderful career. BASEBALL TEAM ORGANIZED IN CLEVELAND AYe have no doubt that all sport fans will be enthused over the news that our Cleveland Branch 14 organized an excellent baseball team. The team joined the Baseball Federation and the City League and was classified as Class “B”. All those who are acquainted with the Federation City L e' a g u e know that in this league only the strongest teams are eligible and accepted, but we who know the quality of our players are certain that they will win the championship this year. The team is composed entirely of Verhovay members and we hope that not only our members, but every Hungarian in Cleveland will have a special interest in this team beacuse all the glory which they can attain will belong to all Hungarians not only to the Verhovavs. Please watch the “Szabadság,” Hungarian daily and the sport pages of the Cleveland papers and when this team’s plays are scheduled, be out there at the field in the largest possible numbers in order to encourage our players. AA’e have to add. that on the uniform of this team, the fact that they belong to Br. 14 of Cleveland, it is not signified. only the name VERHOYAY is shown. Our aim was to create general Verhovay interest and avoid any petty bickerings or jealousies among the Branches. BRANCH 261 FOREST CITY, PA. Acknowledgement I, John Titko, Secretary of Branch 261 of Forest City, Pa., cannot allow the opportunity to pass, to express my grateful thanks to, the Officers of the Home Office of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association that they paid me in full, the $400.00 death benefits prescribed by our By-Laws, after the death of our unforgetable little daughter Margaret, who passed away after being ill only nine days. I take this opportunity to call the attention of Hungarians in particular and everyone in general to the children’s policies of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association, which gave a $500.00 insurance for a twent y-f i v e cent monthly due. I can attest to this throught my sad experience because my little daughter Margaret was a member of the Junior Order only a short time and after paying only $7.50 into the Association, I had $400.00 death benefit issued to me. I affectionately request my fellow members and compatriots to bring into the fold of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association not only their own children but others’ children as well as grown ups, for they cannot secure any insurance better, surer or at less rates than in the Verhovay. I ask the blessing of God on every member of our Association. John Titko, and family Forest City, Pa. “DOUBLE INDEMNITY” On July 1, 1937 a new form of insurance will be established in the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. With the exception of those whose occupations come under the heading of “hazardous occupations” described in our By-Laws, every one of our members carrying life insurance with us, can secure this concession. This is, the increase in the death benefits if death is caused by an accident. Therefore, if someone has a thousand dollar insurance at present and on July 1st he joins this department by paying twenty-five cents additional, monthly, then in case of accidental death, the beneficiary would receive two thousand dollars instead of one thousand. Our present members can join this department also. Those desiring to join, have to fill out an application form for it and send it in to the Home Office. Those new members who join on or after July 1st, should request this new form of insurance on the occassion of their admittance into the Association.
