Hajós György: Heroes' Square - Our Budapest (Budapest, 2001)

EdeTelcs, sculptor (Baja, 1872-Budapest, 1948). He studied art in Vienna. His work as a sculptor was multi-faceted, most of which is made up of small folkloric genre pieces made of terracotta. His main works include a statue of Vörösmarty standing in the Budapest square named after the poet, the sculptural decoration of the College of Music, the Kossuth monument in Kecskemét and the Heroes’ Memorial in Jászberény. Several items by him are held in the collection of the National Gallery. György Vastagh Jr., sculptor (Kolozsvár, 1868-Buda- pest, 1946). He studied art in Munich, after which he made ornamental sculptures and monuments. His fine animal figures are kept in the Agricultural Museum. Many of his creations are on display in the National Gallery. His large work called The Horseherd stands in the courtyard of the Royal Castle of Buda. György Zala, sculptor (Alsólendva, 1858-Budapest, 1937). The most employed monument designer working in the neo-Baroque style of the turn-of- the-century period. He was trained in Vienna and Munich. His works are characterised by external dynamism and over-heated inner passion, a com­plete mastery of the craft and a perfect sense of proportion. His most outstanding works include the statue of A Soldier in the Castle area, another sol­dier figure in Arad, the statue of Ferenc Deák in Szeged, the Heroes’ Monument in Nagykőrös, the Budapest Elizabeth statue and the statues of Gyula Andrássy and István Tisza, which have been removed from their places. 56
