THE MONUMENT TO THE WILLIAM HUSSARS The mortally wounded opponents, a motif not entirely devoid of theatricality, charged the piece with drama, which was heightened by the terrified stallion rearing up on its hind legs. As the bronze relief was removed after 1945, it is only a ledge protruding from the wall that serves as a reminder of the plaque's former presence. However, the monument of the 7th Royal and Imperial William-Hussars has remained in its place. This piece, set in the wall of the Roman Catholic church in Szervita tér in the inner city, was unveiled in 1930. János Istók’s work is a bronze monument of imposing proportions (336 centimetres by 225) and presents a lifeless hussar hanging down from his saddle as he is embraced by Jesus leaning down from the cross. Below it are the words of the inscription: It is by faith in Christ and the blood of our heroes that our fatherland will be resurrected! 1914-1918. 30
