13. Getting some Fresh Air - The Buda Hills
GETTING SO ME FRESH AIR 93 Hűvösvölgy This is the last stop on the children’s railway (alternatively no. 56 tram from Moszkva tér). To the east, through the woods is the “Nagy-rét” meadow, a grassy clearing popular for picnics, playing ball, etc. There is a small fairground with kiosks and a little ferris wheel. Special festivities often take place here on Mayday. Látó Hill [Látó-hegy] Taking the no. 11 bus from Batthyány tér to its terminus there are two possibilities. You can climb the path to the right through the wood up to the Árpád Look-out [Kilátó], from where there is a good view of the city; or you can walk straight on down the road. This brings you to a huge forest-park area providing lots of opportunities for walks, picnicking, etc. Hűvösvölgy (no. 56 tram back to Moszkva tér) is not too far to the east. From the Árpád look-out it is a short distance through the woods to the east down to “Fenyőgyöngye” (restaurant here) and bus no. 65 back to town (though see also next entry). Hármashatár Hill [Hármashatár-hegy] A very high peak, open (i.e. grass-covered, not wooded) with a grand view. You can walk up the road from “Fenyőgyöngye”, though with children the no. 65 bus from here is probably better—there’s lots of space at the top for running around, etc. (good for kites). (Restaurant with terrace view, and kiosk here, too). An attraction of the hill is that on the west side there is the so-called gliders’ airfield, so there’s often plenty to watch in the air, particularly at weekends. To reach Hármashatár Hill from town, take the no. 65 bus from the bottom of Szépvölgyi út, which in turn is reached on the no. 6 bus from Nyugati tér (“Kolosy tér” stop). Budakeszi Game Park [Vadaspark] A beatiful wooded, hilly, enclosed park, covering extensive grounds right on the border of Budapest and Budakeszi. Some animals (wild boars, goats, deer, etc.) are in large enclosures reached up the hill to the left past the entrance. Other animals are free to roam at will through the grounds. There are various raised vantage
