Dent, Bob: Budapest for Children - Our Budapest (Budapest, 1992)
12. Here and There - A mixture of places
HERE AND THERE 87 same with a ring and circular seating. (At 7 Állatkerti körút, next to the Zoo. Little underground to “Széchenyi-fürdő” or no. 72 trolleybus as above.) A very popular place with children, Sunday morning is a good time to experience the atmosphere, which gets quite exciting when the gong goes just before the start of the fun. All sorts of Hungarian and international performers can be seen, acrobats, magicians, clowns, etc., and sometimes there are special shows on ice. Often there is more than one performance a day. The idea that animals shouldn’t be exploited for circus entertainment hasn’t yet caught on in Hungary, so families with sensitivities in this regard should be warned that the shows can be very animal-oriented. Tickets can be booked in advance and this is advisable, especially to get the best seats, but they can usually also be obtained on the spot prior to a show (as its name in Hungarian indicates, it’s a big circus). There are several buffets which serve drinks and snacks very quickly during the break. The longest queues are in the winter to retrieve your coats from the cloakroom at the end of the show. If you find yourself stuck here, you might as well have another drink at the buffet, you could be waiting for twenty minutes or more! Wheelchair access is not particularly good, but there is the possibility of creating room for a wheelchair, in which case the circus recommends avoiding the crowded weekends. The Fun-Fair [Vidám Fark] In the City Park just beyond the Zoo and circus (see above for transport). A traditional, permanent fairground with everything you might expect—big-wheel (slow and good for the view), dodgems (packed in summer), cave-rides, an ancient wooden big dipper, go-karts, shooting ranges, “danger” rides, etc. etc., and lots of food and drink kiosks. A curiosity which attracts children is the old musical merry-go-round just to the left of the main entrance. Open all year, but only with limited operation in the winter months. Next to the main fun-fair, between it and the circus, there is a special, small-children’s fun-fair [Kis Vidám Park],
