10. Getting Involved - Community Centres

10. GETTING INVOLVED Community Centres Budapest has a network of active community centres [művelődési házak] which regularly organise cultural and other activities for children. Tourists and even foreigners living here rarely think of going to a community centre, but by making the effort, some interesting children’s activities can be found and there is the opportunity of meeting Hungarians, thus helping to “de-commer- cialise” the nature of foreign travel. The centres would certainly welcome the participation of foreign visitors, particularly as several run English-language classes for children. These could provide fruitful contacts for pen- friends and holiday exchanges. The following is a selected list of community centres giving a taste of the types of children’s activities they organise (at the time of writing). Some of the larger ones regularly organise concerts and other shows. The most comprehensive information is contained in the printed programmes that they all regularly publish and which can be picked up on the spot, but some details can also usually be found in “Pesti Műsor” and occasionally in the English-language newspapers (1).
