4. CASTLE HILL AND GELLERT HILL Castle Hill and Gellért Hill are the two nearest hills to the river and as such are popular for the views they offer. Castle Hill (the one with the huge former Royal Palace and the Matthias Church overlooking the Chain Bridge) also has many additional attractions. Castle Hill [Várhegy] Castle Hill is not specifically children-orientated but as it is invariably visited by tourists it is worth noting what there is there of interest to children. The hill can be divided conveniently into two sections: the Castle District, which is centred around the Matthias Church, and the former Royal Palace at the southern end, which is today basically a museum complex. Castle Hill can be reached by a number of means. The funicular (3) is perhaps the most interesting way. From the top of this, by the Royal Palace, there is a mini-bus service to the Matthias Church (two stops) and beyond, through the Castle District.
