Gerle János: Palaces of Money - Our Budapest (Budapest, 1994)
Draft by Friedrich Ohmann of Vienma for the First Pest Domestic Savings Bank designed a building very similar to the nearby Piarist Gymnasium (today’s Eötvös University by Március 15 tér); the neo-classicist building evoking the style of Pest designed by Möhring and the one envisaged in a late- Baroque style by Ohman are rather modest specimens of these two architects’ work. Ohmann’s virtuoso drawing skills and his ambition to modernise the style of the Baroque are represented by his plan for the cashier’s hall. The building, which had shops all around on the ground floor, was constructed between 1911 and 1915 to plans by Alpár. The facades are decorated with Géza Maróti’s sculptures, and the architectonic forms are rather simple and serene so that the building .. .will not disturb the customary quiet of this beautiful spot, but will blend unnoticeably into the cityscape...
