The prominent building erected as a shop and apart­ment building at the turn of the century at the southeast corner of Vörösmarty tér (no. 3) still functions partly as a department store and partly as an office block. Its designers, Flöris Korb and Kálmán Giergl, had already worked together in creating the building for the Acad­emy of Music, one of the most significant Art Nouveau complexes. The two architects had returned from Ger­many, and thus the influence of Jugendstil, the German equivalent of Art Nouveau, also manifests itself in this building. Even though it is a massive block with relatively few decorations, its well-proportioned distribution of mass and the harmony in the facade’s articulation make for an impression more pleasant than overwhelming.
