The prominent building erected as a shop and apartment building at the turn of the century at the southeast corner of Vörösmarty tér (no. 3) still functions partly as a department store and partly as an office block. Its designers, Flöris Korb and Kálmán Giergl, had already worked together in creating the building for the Academy of Music, one of the most significant Art Nouveau complexes. The two architects had returned from Germany, and thus the influence of Jugendstil, the German equivalent of Art Nouveau, also manifests itself in this building. Even though it is a massive block with relatively few decorations, its well-proportioned distribution of mass and the harmony in the facade’s articulation make for an impression more pleasant than overwhelming.
